A family goes camping to a remote forest -- and discovers that monsters are real.
THE ENCOUNTER AT BOUNDLESS is used with permission from Adam Spinks. Learn more at ajspinksfilmmaker.com.
Travis is an estranged father taking his two kids -- teenager Kaela and her younger brother Max -- on a camping trip for the weekend to spend some much-needed time with them. Since separating from their mother, he has been avoiding spending time with them but he wants to reconnect.
What is supposed to be a peaceful natural excursion, though, is more fraught than he intended. Kaela is resentful and dismissive of his efforts, ignoring him for her phone. And then there is the matter of a strange presence in the woods... one that asserts itself just when the family seems furthest apart.
Written by Theresa Hedges and directed by Adam Spinks, this short weaves a beautifully observed, sensitive family drama with the uneasiness and slow dread of a horror film, exploring the tensions between parents and children in a broken family dynamic.
The storytelling has a sharp, clear eye for the way that tension and uneasiness simmer under surfaces, from the silences between people to the sinister hum of wind in the air. From the beauty of the cinematography to the emphasis of the performances on the unspoken and unexpressed, almost all aspects of the film bear the quality of patience, sculpting each moment and story beat with great care and letting them unfold masterfully.
The pacing makes for a slow burn in the progression of the narrative, taking the time to painstakingly establish the dynamics of the family, starting with a strained exchange of the kids where the looks between parents say more than any number of words could. The drive to the campsite is equally full of tension, and the iciness between father and daughter shows no sign of thawing, even as Max and his father begin to address the breach in their relationship.
Actor Adrian Annis as the father balances competing currents of shame, hopefulness and love, especially as he attempts to connect with his children, who are played with subtlety and intelligence by actors Kyla Heselton and Nathan Horrod. The story slowly leaves clues and weaves an increasingly disquieting atmosphere around this family unit. When both familial tension and the hidden threat come out into the open, father and children must come together to escape it.
The horror aspect of THE ENCOUNTER AT BOUNDLESS clearly leaves enough room for viewers to remain curious about. But the short still feels like a complete story on its own, thanks to the deep emotional investment it's created for viewers, bringing together the broken pieces of a once intact family unit in a satisfying way. They have to connect, or else fall prey to a much scarier threat. Their reconciliation is beautiful to watch, and we come to root for Travis and his kids. So it is all the more disquieting when a larger threat seems to emerge at the story's end, darkening this hard-won healing and leaving viewers wanting more of an intriguing, beautifully crafted world.

The only thing good about an artsy fartsy movie with no ending is not having to watch a sequel with no beginning or ending... especially if your younger sibling who everyone loves more than you even though you worked hard your entire life and have to support him longer than your own children who have already moved out and started lives of their own allowing him to move from the couch to the basement to a room after they left. @@hemmojito Or maybe they disappear and are never heard from again.....and maybe it's because Dad will become one of those monsters having been bitten by it. The kids are just collateral damage. They have to stay and live their lives in secret, possibly becoming prisoners or maybe members of the research team. Either way they disappear as far as the rest of the world knows. OR maybe they are just killed. Nah....that's not creative enough. Just being killed would be too common. Definitely need a creative part 2 to bring some closure to this. Then maybe a part 3! (:

Please don’t make part 2 where they have to flee for their lives and be hunted down to be killed for witnessing it. If the security guy wanted to kill them he could’ve done it when the little kid gave it away. Better that they would be under surveillance for a time so if they said something they could be discredited or taken to the side and explained why they shouldn’t say anything if it was legitimately something that needed to be kept quiet. ( like an inquisitive alien just visiting but doing no real harm but expected and known to them…. Hence the asteroid story on the news. Also…. Any facility that really wanted to be kept secret would have MUCH better maintained signs and video security where they would’ve been detected on arrival. Part 2 could be great if not going down these standard overdone routes. IMHO. But very well done and I liked it. 🙂👍

We dont see the president (and yes Justin is not a god. He is just a regular guy) doesnt go on T.V. every day to talk about the threats we are facing as a nation or to talk about wich plot or wich country is spying on us or anything of that nature. That's why to me is very hard to understand this HUGE NEED to carry a weapon. Sure plenty of people own hunting riffles or other hunting equipements such as bows or any other weapons. We dont bring them out just to go to the mailbox or anywhere else. And as i said above, the president Justin Trudeau is NOT A GOD, he is a normal guy just like you or me. And no allegiance to the flag either. That's another thing that i just dont understand. Why praying and swear allegiance to a flag?? It's just a piece of cloth to me. This is like that film _2012_ but much less extreme and way more believable. Short enough so you don't grow tired of the high stakes and drama, yet with characters so believable you wouldn't mind a full fledge film of it! Don't get me wrong, _2012_ isn't all bad, but it's more for the comedy and my personal preference leans more towards serious, realistic encounters like this film showcased. Really loved the monster! If this film ends up detouring potential future campers, then that is a REAL SHAME. I've camped over two dozen times across the USA, and I can confidently say that I have only had one vivid encounter with a strange creature while soloing in the woods. No big deal though... just some claws poking through an opening in my car window, some heavy breathing with a vocal tone lower than any animal I have ever heard, and some slight car shaking (it was NOT a bear). NBD. To anyone that is skeptical about strange things in deep woods... just keep an open mind. I hadn't kept one until I lived my supernatural experience. That being said... I encourage people to still go and camp, I still do.

There's just something really creepy about the great outdoors sometimes, isn't there! Thanks for the lovely feedback.

What a wonderful story ❤ of Family resilience and finding each other. Even though this was a short film, the father learned his Beautiful Daughter was incredibly smart and His Son also was in tuned into what was going on with the family dynamics for his age. Ah! Now the Alien, who refreshingly didn't have 2 legs and was very scary. But you left ( I'm moaning now lol) the story wide open for a sequel (part 2) this short story could make for a rather interesting movie. I Loved the Actors and they deserve a Applause because they were excellent. Thank you 😊 for a rather interesting Story/topic.....now please 🙏 A movie ?.

Nope, be satisfied with what you see. The writers are too lazy to write a good ending.

2 comments above yours in the replies the maker of this film said they were working on a part 2, but that was 8 months ago.
