yeh the birds is very telling. Follow the birds find water in australia. But yeh in experience if you see a murder of crows on your road to home is a sign of ending relationship of sorts with anything to do with the feeling of home.

Interesting topic, thanks for sharing. I am hooked when the ancient rome is presented somehow. My thoughts on the augur and the interpretation "will of the gods". I am just hypothesizing here, the augur could have been used by the actual roman emperor for a more favorable outcome in the sense of "an offer he couldn't resist" 😲 Simply put, the omens as an instrument to justify the sometimes harsh politics at that time. The italian Rinascimento had also a well known guy named Machiavelli, and he had some tips written in books about how to stay in charge/power 😀 Any thoughts ?

It could be..for the augur, there are many different perspectives out there. Choose the one you like, I guess. As for the other part, Machiavelli...really, you want to go there..🙂..power, by inheritance, by evil doings/deeds?, I guess he would tell you, in order to gain leadership skills, you should be virtuous, of course, he does not see virtue as opposite of vice, but rather opposite of luck. So, according to him, whatever increases probability of success is virtue..🙃 If you have read Il Principe ( The Prince), you may have noticed it is not actually a manual on how to rule, but more of a satire and almost of a warning. Do not be burdened by ideology, set a goal and achieve it, don't let anyone lecture you on what is the best way to do anything, as there is no such thing. I like him. As for the omens, Machiavelli was as superstitious as most at that time, in medieval Europe.

@@VivScriptum well said 🙏 Virtù yes that's true. As far as I remember il Principe was written for the Medici's at that time, the powerhouse in firenze. He just wanted his old position in the family back, but things turned out differently for him. Thank you 😉

This is very fascinating topic. I've just been reading Cicero's On Divination so this subject has been on my mind. I wonder what books would you recommend reading if one were so disposed to learning more about prodigies and omens in the ancient world? One of the things I love when reading Livy or Tacitus or Plutarch is how they'll be giving a very detailed forensic narrative about historical events only to suddenly veer off into a listing of omens experienced by the pontiffs or citizenry. Makes for some very colorful history! Is there some book that catalogues all of these "superstitions" as you have just done? Something along the lines of Artemidorus' Interpretations of Dreams?

Books..perhaps a book by Mathew Dillon: Omens and Oracles in Ancient Greece, I believe published in 2017. Now, I know, it is not what you asked for, but it is a somewhat nice compilation. As far as I know about Artemidorus, he reportedly wrote two books, now lost, about palm reading and interpreting bird omens. If you want something similar about his work on dreams, the only one who comes to my mind at this moment is Sigmund Freud. There is also one other called On Dreams ( De Insomniis ), by Synesius, 1888. Perhaps, that will be of some interest to you.
