In episode 47 Scott and Ally try to figure out what stinks on their boat and where the awful smell is coming from. We own a 2002 Bayliner 4087 Aft Cabin MY. We thought our holding tank was leaking....turns out it was the inline vent that needed to be replaced! See the story here: boatingjourney.com/2019/10/13/...

Great video guys! Thanks for showing the honest side of boating. Owning a boat isn’t always cocktails and sunset cruises. As a boat owner we know we will all face situations like this with our equipment sooner or later. I hope you guys figure out the problem. There is ALWAYS something with a boat. No matter what kind of boat you have there is always something that will need to be addressed. Love the videos! Keep up the great work and have a nice cold strong drink! You guys deserve it!

Appreciate the video. We just bought a 4087 and trying to also find the source. Did y’all ever find yours? Also, is there only 1 pump out for both tanks or is there a separate one for the aft head. Thanks again for the informative video.

Not a very pretty subject, but just another reality of owning a boat! Ever tried Simple Green brand of cleaner? I cleaned a friend's 37 foot Carver and later his Harbor Master Coastal 520 using Simple Green both interior and exterior. The owners described the boats as well "refreshed". Again, these videos are so great!

Oh, and no we didn't try simple green here, but we did when we cleaned the aft biggest. Another video!

Many thanks for sharing your experiences, I hope you have got this problem sorted out now. Just prior to the Christmas Lockdown in the UK my wife and I bought a three year old Widebeam Narrowboat, and during our first night aboard discovered a very unpleasnt odour by the bed adjacent to the holding tank. Your video has given me the confidence to investigate the problem once COVID restrictions are lifted we are allowed to travel again. All the best. Keith

Hi Keith, yes, it turned out (Thank God) to be our inline vent filter. It is hard to find and we had to hire a professional to deal with it. We're relieved, because if it was the holding tank, the only way to access the aft one is to tear apart the bed frame and floor. Thanks for watching!

Many thanks for your reply. That is great that you got the problem sorted out, I will check our filter when we are able. All the best in these strange times. Keith

Hi, glad you got sorted ok. Great channel. A possible tip for all perhaps: I had the same issue, same setup as you and seriously difficult to get to the tank. I wanted to put some dye into the system to check if/where it was leaking but was worried a plumber's dye would upset the pump/seals etc. So instead I added a whole bottle of blue food colouring and flushed a few times and left it. Well, if you can eat food colouring, it can't be that bad. ...Then more water in bilge but good news: no dye. It turned out to be simply rainwater from somewhere.

Great tip Bob!! We'll try that next time (hopefully there's no next time). Thank you for watching!

Check your hoses. If they are over 10 years old they could be the Odor issue. They only last about 10 years. Just smell the white hoses in different areas. If they are not leaching they really won’t smell. If they smell real bad, especially in a low spot, it’s time to change them. I know, I had to do it.

Thanks! These hoses definitely need to be replaced, but it was the inline vent that needed to be replaced. Smell went away!

that sounds like a great idea, but there is NO WAY I can get to the sanitary hoses in my boat.

You kinda brushed off the crushed spot on top of the forward tank, which appear to have creased (and cracked) the tank. Did you take an inspection mirror or your flexible camera to inspect that location? You indicated you had a vent issue. I'm no expert, but I know pump-outs use vacuum, to draw out the tanks. What happens when the tank vent is blocked? Will the tank try to collapse (or crease) the tank if the vacuum gets too high due to a blocked vent?

Great questions! As soon as the inline vent filter was replaced, the smell went away. We do still wonder where the crease came from.

Thanks for sharing! Did you ever get that smell gone, and if so, did you have to change any hoses or tanks and how much?

It was a great lesson. We were about to make the decision to replace the forward holding tank, when we asked the service company in the marina (who knew the boat well), to check it out first. They did and recommended we replace the in-line vent filters. Wow! Worked like a charm!!

Wow! Thanks SO much! The previous owners said that we should replace filters but we didn't. Now we will replace them, knowing that should make a difference! Thanks so much for sharing!!!
