More like wine. It shows how much earth has affected him. As soon as his son got powers he was always supposed to take over the world. He was going to train mark as he was trained. As a viltrumite. But his time on earth changed him. Gave him a heart, his own soul. When his own son, not just another viltrumite but his human son was hurt it broke his heart. You see nolan relise exactly how hard doind his duty is going to be on him. But he made an oath and he will do what he came here to do. Its not until the season finale his guilt makes him reconsider, and he chooses his family over his people. But even then he knows he camt stay on earth after what hes done. So he just leaves.

I like the idea of his realization too. He doesn’t just say he didn’t mean to hit him so hard, he hesitates and restarts his thoughts. “I didn’t… i didn’t mean to hit you so hard.” Almost like he was going to say something like “i didn’t hit you that hard at all” Hes seeing how weak Mark is, i don’t think he’s upset or disappointed, i think he LITERALLY just didn’t consider that his son wasn’t raised on Viltrum like every other Viltrumite he’s ever known. There is currently NO SUCH THING as a weak Viltrumite… except for Mark…

Even when he explains the relationship with Marks Mother he tries to make the excuse that he thinks of her as a pet, but it sounds more like he's trying to convince himself that's the truth and push his emotional ties back

You have it backwards he doesn't care about them thats why he showed no emotion he wanted to see if his son could be a viltramite but he's too human to handle the ones that won't hold back and he's disappointed to see it

Don’t the Viltrumites get stronger each time they’re hurt? I think he is quite literally toughening him up… something that, in his eyes at this point, is a necessity. At this point in the story, Nolan knows Viltrumites are coming to Earth, and if they see Mark as weak, he’ll be culled. Definitely not cool, but it’s understandable given Nolan’s understanding of how the universe works at this point in the story.

More like inner turmoil. He trains him the way he was trained but when he realizes he's actually hurt his son he feels regret. He tries to overcome these feelings later by doing what he does to Mark but in the end he can't. So that's why he leaves. This scene is deeper than most realize.

That’s actually a fantastic observation. Nolan is clearly different from other viltrumites mentally but it shows physically. Nolan is more of a street smart brute while people like conquest are barbaric warriors with a literal taste for blood. I think they do that hand spear thing for intimidation.
