Yes, on a Mac you need to go into the security settings to allow OM Workspace to access some areas in the system normally protected, but the hints given are quite clear. I had no problem updating the OM-1 and my lenses whatsoever. Of course, this might change in the future but I am confident that there will be a solution, like using a smartphone app for an update.

OM needs to move to the download and update from a memory card method. There’s much less chance outside problems (power failure, internet outage, cell outage, OS security changes) will interrupt or block the update.

Just use OI Share to update camera bodies and lenses.

Yes indeed. OI Share app on my phone did my OM-1 and lens firmware updates very quickly and very easily.

I always much prefer the Lumix firmware update process which loads the firmware for bodies and lenses from an SD card. You can use a newer Lumix camera to update the firmware on Olympus lenses.

Just installed latest version of OM Workspace on my Mac M1 Mini running latest OS without any issues and also checked for updates on my E-M1ii again without a hitch.

Thanks Brian for bringing up this issue. Some time ago it was a real pain to update Sony FW on Mac too. Fortunately they have since moved to the SD card update method and that's what OMS should do as well.

I am just catching up on your videos here in Singapore as I have spent most of the year travelling, good for photo opportunities and frequent flyer points but not good for family life and social life. I have had issues with firmware, however I am still happy enough with the performance I get from the M1X. On general remarks about OM and M43, I tend to switch off as so many commentators have an agenda and the current thing is full frame. As an aside, one of the pleasures of your videos is reminding me of home when I see locations, I left Cumbria and Carlisle almost 20 years ago but it's still home.

I got my local camera shop to update my OM-1(I told the guy to do it on a PC) for only $25.00 USD! What a bargain! Then I felt more comfortable and updated several lenses using the AI Share app--easy! (I followed the directions by David Smith.)

I had problems connecting my OM1mk1 to the OI share app on my phone. Since updating the firmware 2 days ago it now seems to work fine. Not had chance to check out the autofocus improvements yet. Update worked smoothly without any issues.

The biggest reason is likely tiktok. Its been the same for all compact digital cameras. Emily has definitely been a benefit for those looking specifically for m4/3 cameras and probably George Holden as he was promoting Olympus for those who couldnt get hold of the new Fujis

My new OM5 completely locked up when attempting to set up Bluetooth / WiFi connection to Apple iPhone. I use Mac and as yet have not updated the firmware on my OM1 cameras. This firmware update problem is a big issue. I also had a problem with my new TerraMaster RAID 5 direct attached server and had to go into the security settings to make it work. Apple need to address these unacceptable issues.

I have used Mac for years. Yes, the security settings do need to be made. I have updated my lenses, my OM-5, my E-620 (ancient), and my EM1-mkiii with OM Workspace. Even with the new version (2.3.2). However, AFTER the firmware was updated on my OM-5 to 1.2, THEN my OM-5 could not connect. My other cameras connect just fine. There's a software glitch somewhere, most likely in the OM-5's 1.2 firmware. Since my E-620 uses a usb type A connector (and that connects), and my E-M1 mk iii uses a usb type C connector (and that connects), the issue is most likely with how the OM-5's micro usb using version 1.2 firmware interacts with OMW version 2.3.2 (OM-5 no longer connects to OMW). I was able to connect the OM-5 to OMW 2.3.2 and update the firmware from version 1.1 to version 1.2. It was AFTER this that the OM-5 cannot connect. The issue is most likely NOT macos.

I recently purchased the OM1 from WEX and tried to update the firmware on my 14" MacBook Pro and the app bricked the camera! OM System should be ashamed of themselves, why in 2024 do we need to use a computer? I have sent it back and purchased the Fuji X H2. I do enjoy your channel, I am in the UK as well, a bit further south than you.

I’m a Mac user so I’m up a creek without a paddle as far as updating my OM-1 Mk II is concerned. Same applies to OM Workspace updates!

I love my Olympus cameras (I have 4 currently and have had others in the past) but why is everything associated with them so difficult and convoluted? If I want to update my Nikon cameras for instance, I go to the Nikon website, download the firmware update put it on an SD card and stick it in the camera. Very easy. I have been trying to update my Olympus cameras for a week now. I have tried Mac, OS and Windows OS's , to no avail. I have also in the past had 3 lenses bricked by the update dropping out (Or in one instance a powercut , which obviously isn't OM's fault, however the update process is what put me in that position in the first place). I'm not going to get rid of my Olympus cameras (Yet), however, I do find myself using my Nikons more and more because they're always up to date and frankly less hassle.

I am running the current Mac OS Sonoma 14.4.1 on a Mac book air M chip, I was able to update my OM 1 to version 1.6 and the camera appears to be working OK , where I did run into a problem was after the update it would not reload my camera settings or custom modes , so it was like setting up a new camera from the language select 11:49 11:49 ion, date etc , I haven’t had it out to see if there are any noticeable improvements in performance yet. I hope it doesn’t mean a choice between OM system and Apple! Being a cynical Scottish / Australian one might think it’s another step in the Apple strategy to dominate the photography market.

Similar to you, I was able to update my OM-5 from version 1.1 to 1.2. I could not connect my OM-5 after the firmware update to OMW 2.3.2. I, too, use macos 14.4.1. If you see my other post, both my E-620 and my E-M1 mkiii connect just fine. OM Systems software engineers made some mistake, most likely. It most likely is not a macos issue.

I was doing a firmware up data uesing om workspace on Windows 10 and my OM1 has locked up and has had to be sent back to OM Systems.

I’ll deal with this only when I need to. The dust will have settled by then in all probability. My trusty E-M1 MkII is not properly run-in yet and is on the latest and probably last firmware version. Yes I use an iMac and have never had this type of issue yet and by the time I do, it will probably no longer be an issue.

Hi Brian, perhaps this problem with updates is more down to the way OM systems chooses to implement it? The traditional update process for the Lumix range is largely platform agnostic. Outside of photography many specialist activities need a Windows PC, I generally suggest that they get an old Windows laptop, possibly with a defective battery that they can dig out just for these purposes. Of course SD cards in the smaller capacities are now very cheap, would be a business opportunity for someone perhaps to put an update on a cheap card and post it out for perhaps £5. (Ignoring the copyright implications for now)

I’ve literally just updated the firmware to 1.6 on my OM-1, on my Mac Studio. It required restarting the Mac and reducing the kernel security settings, but once done, it worked perfectly. The procedure is outlined on OM Systems website somewhere. However I am still on MacOS Ventura (not the very latest Sonamo); so perhaps that will completely block it next time 🤞I’m a software developer, so have access to Windows PCs too fortunately. I do much prefer the Lumix method (copying the update to SD card and update directly on the camera) 👍

Updated my OM 1 Mk 2 & had to reselect language choice along with date & time settings. Someone online had problem with custom settings but I didn’t. Win 11 laptop.OM Systems will have to sort out the Mac update problem with Apple otherwise will lose current customers & put off new ones.

I'm aware of a recent security issue that was identified on Apple Silicon chips. I thought it was on the new M3 chip, but perhaps it was on all of them. I tend to wait a while before I update my MacBook or Mac mini. Just in case, I have an older Mac mini that is Intel based. It's slow and I'd only use it if other options didn't work. Fortunately, all cameras are up to date, but I don't have either OM1. This may also be a push to use the OM Share App to do updates, which some people seem to favour. BTW, I saw the posts from some people also, but one of them did say that the cat had unplugged the camera or computer in the middle of the update. The other thing about Macs, sometimes its in the settings and not an issue with the OS or the software app.

If this applies to Olympus, it will apply to everyone. However u can always update the camera from the SD card.

I've updated my OM-1 mark 1 without problems using the latest OM Workspace on a Windows 10 PC. Like everyone else, I had to put in the date, time and language selection afterwards. The only other settings change that I've noticed (so far) is the microphone level setting was reverted to 0dB (the default). My guess is some of the post-update 'settings' changes are because the latest OM-1 Mk 1 firmware is now derived from the Mk 2 codebase, to make it easier develop and test future firmware updates.

If your using the cameras for pro work, it's a huge problem when your workflow is messed up through firmware updates. It happened to me with Fuji some years ago with camera freezes after an update and I binned the system. I have an OM-1 but will not download a firmware update for at least 6 months. But I do also use Sony as my main system.OM will definitely put off the users that make money from their cameras.

Three last expensive lenses returned by major issues with Lumix bodies, never happened before, all made in Vietnan, never more a new lens from OMS..

Further to my comment a few days ago, I have now been able to update OM Workspace and my OM-1 Mk II. As a few others have observed, the issue centres on enabling the Mac Operating System permission to allow a certain OM System file extension which you do through your Security Settings on your Mac. However, I had no joy with this using the Safari web browser so I tried using Firefox instead and bingo, everything snapped into place! The relevant file extension was flagged up in my Security Settings and once enabled, the update proceeded as advertised! The only problem for me was that the update did not reload my camera settings which was a bit annoying!

And I am asked why I don't use a Mac? 😅I'll stick to using my Windows laptop thanks. Yes, I have done my OM-1 FW update (to 1.6) without issue, other than the few things like country, time zone, date & time & also change the aperture settings in C1,2,3&4, plus the SD card saving order. Everything else seems fine.

OI share app from IOS works with OM-1 and OM-5. I just updated mine last night and finished in a few minutes.

they fixed this with the last firmware. btw I updated with a Mac Studio on Sonoma with no problem, i did what was required for os to work with previous release by Apple, didn’t do anything now.

You are wrong Brian, although I'm sure that will be hard to accept as a YT producer. Olympus/OMDS had a top drawer camera with acknowledged issues with things like autofocus. It seemed that they were on top of it, released a couple of firmware updates, but then went quiet. Then one day they announced the OM-1 Mk ii. The OM-1 Mk ii had a few changes, a bit more more memory and made a few changes that were less than extraordinary. In short and in spite of some of the OMDS statements, they produced a small cosmetic camera upgrade with a little bit more memory and more rubbery knobs. Some, although not all, of those new features were probably achievable withing the the Mk-i camera. Defend that if you can old chum.

This is being blown out of all proportion. it's a complete non-issue. Just follow the instructions and will work just fine. Yeah, it would be nice if they shifted to SD card based updates. Rather than this clickbait, why not explain the (Apple-supported) process than enables the OM Workspace update?

Yes, I have a Mac Studio and also have two Windows laptops. One of the machines runs totally silently, quickly, efficiently and with minimal power consumption, whilst the others ramp up their fans noisily when any work is running! Guess which is which 🤔
