@@yachtingworld I hope you don't take offences that there's times like this I hate you. You don't just have a good job or even an excellent job. In fact I don't know how to describe your job or even if anyone can. I bet there's times you complain that the wind is icy cold or something. Thankfully you don't put that in your videos. Next time it is icy cold and rough seas just remember what you do *AND GET PAID FOR IT* because the rest of us don't. I do have a question. Is this the best boat in its class (around 60ft)? I'm an aerospace engineer who works in controls systems and automation. So I am quite familiar with the sort of hardware and electronic controls in something like this. I do the same sort of stuff you show with the touch screens except for things like manufacturing plants and mineral processing facilities. They are a little different to the industrial stuff I do but the principles are the same. *I can recognise the attention to detail instantly in all that system.* The fact they have considered the maintenance and servicing of the electrics and other automation is stunningly impressive. Almost all other engineers outside of my field don't care about maintenance. Their idea is make it work and dump it on the customer. I almost want to show the mechanical engineers I work with that this is how things are DONE PROPERLY. From your perspective its a beautiful boat. From mine its a beautiful piece of engineering.

I think Oyster should make scale models of its yachts that you can rig and lift the deck off to see the layout underneath, with working lights, for those of us who would really really like a real one, but know that it is going to take something extraordinary to ever own anything much larger than a Topper. At least we'll be able to play with it on our desks or in our bathtubs and dream we're on the high seas.

I know (thankfully) they are working on the noise from the watt and sea (sorry if that isn't right), but one wonders if ditching the diesel engine and getting a bigger generator and having an electric motor might not be a better option, especially one that can be used to charge the batteries. Incidentally are the batteries ole school or are they using lithium ion or similar? Cheers for the vid and very glad that Oyster's future looks bright it was a bit dodgy there for a while it seemed.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 2 жыл бұрын
Electric drive with Lithium ion batteries, solar and a backup generator are already being used on multiple production sailboats, including relatively inexpensive global cruisers such as Windelo. It seems highly practical to me, and it's operating in much greater synergy with wind and nature than chugging along with Diesel drive. With hydrogeneration all of the energy used to motor out of marina/mooring ball/anchorage can be recharged simply by sailing. With enough solar and battery, the generator can get almost no use, even when powering all house loads like induction cooking, watermaker, etc. The generator is just an emergency backup for very long becalmed passages.

Underwater lights! Didn't know they had those. Like always, everything looks so natural. The navigation table solution is a stunner. The only thing I don't like is the dinghy conundrum. One had always to go over sixty feet to have a dinghy garage in the aft. Here with 59.5, you get the disadvantage of a larger boat and the disadvantage of having your deck ruined with that dinghy always in sight while crossing the ocean.

@@marylandflyer5670There idea seems to be that in adverse conditions you sail the boat on auto and on watch crew shelter under dodger. I have to say that’s what I do on my own boat( not an oyster !) but certainly the attractions of the sheltered helm position of the Amel could be very appealing in poor conditions. However in nice weather or a bit of round the cans you want good viz. it all depends on what you use the boat for.

The only negative in my view is the 3 windows in the hull design, not practical when heeling over and a possible drag issue, just my opinion.

Very little - as the windows are generally stronger than the glassfibre surrounding them!
