When we identified 15.87 million acres of landlocked public land in the western U.S., we started wondering what some of these places actually look like. Led by onX Founder Eric Siegfried and Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership’s Joel Webster, explore the patchwork landscape of the West’s public lands and efforts to solve this complicated problem through the eyes of hunters, historians, and the folks who call these places home.

The problem is becoming more acute due to locals not owning these private ranches surrounding public land. The Wyoming case, for instance, the Elk Mountain Ranch that is suing to stop corner crossing is owned by a billionaire pharmaceutical magnate from the East. The entire island mountain range locked up by a single encircling property is owned by two brothers from Texas that made billions in fracking. There are many more examples, but the result is that a knock on the door and a polite request used to be able to grant access. No more, these absentee owners bought these properties solely to deny access to anyone else.

I'm in a bizarre situation myself where I bought 40 acres of checkerboard in Wyoming. These ranchers owned all this land for over a century, they ran low on money and sold off a bunch in the 80s and 90s when the family ranches were struggling with money, now all these rando's people such as myself own land, have a deed which includes access easements and now the current ranchers want to play the "oh well, you can't go there"..... "well you need to talk to your parents and grandparents that owned the ranch before you and ask them why they created this mess. Overall I have legal, physical access to get up there but the rancher isn't too happy.

Let's pass laws that if a landowner is profitting of of adjoining public lands he must allow an easement. So many landowners profit from these landlocked public lands by leasing to outfitters, grazing, etc. Many think they own it. I know TRCP, ONX and others want to take the high road and maintain a positive profile, but it is frustrating living out here and experiencing what we do. Good on you and all entities involved for bringing this travesty to light... and for moving forward with good intent.

Thanks for the video. Living in WY, we are dealing with this a lot as well as there are more laws restricting public access. We do not have the high water of the streams and rivers to access our public land and then the checkerboard lands are another problem, and we are currently dealing with a court case on this. Having access is a big issue and people need to understand that you may have to walk, not drive, into these areas. This will continue to be a challenge and hopefully we can make steps forward to have access to lands that are owned by the public. More to come....

Great efforts to increase access to our public lands!!. Interesting that we can legally access these landlocked pieces by helicopter, yet hop over at a corner is illegal in many states. Can I use a trampoline, high step ladder, or even a rope swing to "leap" or "helicopter" higher over the corner and then be legal? Collaboration is important yet some private landowners and outfitters don't want us to access these public properties. They want the grazing and hunting all for themselves, and they have huge lobbying strength with their state legislatures. I had a great experience in Nevada where a landowner allowed all respectful sportsman to cross his property to access public land. More should do the same.

It's kind of wild when you think about it. Hunter gatherer culture saw an end to their live style when farmers and ranchers emerged. Now that same primitive drive to hunt and gather keeps us fighting for access to our public lands with those cultures. need legislation that will give Americans back the public land access that we can vote for.

Great video..this corner crossing issue is a big deal. One would hope land owners might fear an emminent domain claim by government and work to make an easement, as then they would control the traffic (ie could restrict motor vehicle, stock etc) if they lose in court and government claims right of way then they would lose control of the access. Perhaps there can be some test cases/examples of RMEF, or TRCP, or Nature conservancy to work on easements with private land owners. I would disagree that it's just "out of state rich people that buy up a ranch", the western states have this problem with many private land owners that box in public tracks
@larryborn1082
@larryborn1082 2 жыл бұрын
Access to these parcels will, overwhelming, have to be forcefully taken through imminent domain or similar proceedings due to the greed of western landowners. Between having exclusive use of the public land to themselves and the huge amounts of money they make outfitting hunts with their exclusive access they have NO interest in helping the public......quite the opposite. The first place to start would be requiring every rancher that grazes livestock on public land at the ridiculously subsidized rates provide access easements to any public land their property landlocks in any manner.

Landlocked lands are difficult to access but there is problems on both side’s. Landowners may have in past let people use their lands to access the BLM Ground but maybe they don’t now bc people were tearing up there roads or leaving gates open., and etc. The problems also arrise from people using the public ground and crossing the fence onto private. There is also the people who hunt public and standing on the private be a giant 7x7 bull elk 5 feet from the boundary and someone hunting on public says well no one will know it’s only 5 feet. Forcing someone to give up there land for public use can also cause massive problems. The whole thing is tricky but it takes both sides coming together and discussing the problems and working together to come up with solutions. They’re are those on BOTH SIDES who will not listen or cooperate no matter how much you try. The bigger problems are usually the 5% bad public users that cause problems with some access but also same goes for the 5% bad private guys, who are usually rich people and think they own the world. In truth if you reallywant to hunt landlocked public ask the landowner about helping out on the ranch for a weekend and trade it for access. There’s ways to every solution but forcing the issue from one side will only make things worse.

A big issue has been the increasing prevalence of huge 'ranches' that profit by guiding and letting people hunt on their land. Unfortunately, many of these 'ranches' have become money making machines...and they have the manpower to patrol/police. Unfortunately, they often use intimidation tactics to keep people off public lands that border their property. Not good. I'd recommend a podcast called the "BHA Podcast & Blast with Hal Herring". His podcasts explores many public lands issues, etc...and is worth a listen!

So your solution is to force a land owner to sell a chunk of his land to open access, thereby increasing foot traffic and encroachment on the land he still owns. Likely the reason said landowner bought the land in the first place is to get the Hell away from the public.
@emmahunt9804
@emmahunt9804 Жыл бұрын
Who is forcing anyone to do anything? And yeah we all want to get away from the public, but you shouldn't have a right to shut off all access to hundreds, thousands of acres of public land that you did not pay for. Some kind of easement should be made, no matter how small. The solutions presented in this video are wonderful and would help everyone except the greedy hoarders of the world.
