as muslim we fast in ramadan for 1month , its of course just to stop eating until the sunset then we can eat till fajr prayer around 4-5am, my experience is amazing , first im shocked is that i can get stronger when i fast like wrist curl and other exercises went up and specially after i done fasting my muscles grow bigger is like my body now can use the food better than before , and i dont lose muscle mass when i fast its weird , with all other benefits that fasting can give it worth it , for those peoples who want to drink water only like devon make sure to check sugar level and your body prepared for that to get the health benefits like you have to make sure you are not suffering from anemia or things that make fasting harmful for you

Corporations fund universities through research grants and donations, which means that they fubdamnetally have leverage over what is supported (funded) and not supported. you see this in the food industry too, where many companies are reluctant to supported reasearch into ultra-processed foods. When it comes to health my philosophy is that true health is found in a natural lifestyle. Consuming sugar (sucrose), caffiene, processed foods is not natural for us. Fasting is mist definitely beneficial for us since it aligns with the way we had to function in the past. Theres a reason why several religions encourage fasting as a practice, because its good for us. These 'educated' institutional figures trust in the "research" but personally id rather believe in the practices that have been carried down from generation to generation

I did a 7 day water-only fast about a month ago. I've done short 1, 2 and 3 day fasts before that but that 7 day fast, at the 4th day I can't really put into words how incredible I felt. Not hungry. @@PG_FISHING I wouldn't. Think moon phases. Eat less leading up to the fast. When you break the fast build up slowly to your normal diet. @@mcfarvo I did a hybrid to that, yes. I made sure to have sufficient calories for my measured needs. That information i gathered in the beginning stages, testing my limits. That's pretty easy to access, per the specific individual, and their medical conditions. Once that's all set, it's repetition. It can be a OMAD, or up to 20 to 30 day fast. I just find it important for my own progress, that I did kept my heart rate around 130 to 160 for at least 90 minutes to 180 minutes, while my body was in ketosis. Some days, a few in a row, I would lose multiple pounds per day. I can say the OMAD allowed me to lose the optimal amount of weight, in my opinion it's easier than a long multi day fast, and it showed me incredible results. I also got to exercise pretty hard, which I now love doing to maintain. P.S. MY SON IS COMING!!

There are other benefits of fasting for example, if you have digestive system issues like I used to get heartburn my whole life. Having those long periods where you’re not consuming food allows your digestive system to heal itself otherwise it can’t when you’re constantly eating. I’ve tried smaller portions of food broken up into 6 to 8 meals a day. Me and particular that didn’t work as well as fasting does. So I actually intermittent fast or a daily lifestyle. 18/6. I eat from 2pm-8pm and after that I try to keep it at nothing however I take fish oil and collagen so that’s technically cheating but I’d recommend the lifestyle to anyone to try. Start with a much smaller window and see how you feel. It will also get you a clear head, running off your body fat and get you a little more discipline/willpower

Intermittent fasting is where it is at. Plus watching your carbs. As I got older, 58 now, I was becoming insulin resistant even though I was very active my entire life, worked construction for over 30+ years, worked out, surfed, ect.....But I was eating way too much to try and maintain energy levels that are not possible or very difficult as you get older. I was developing peripheral nephropathy and on the verge of becoming diabetic. Once I started intermittent fasting I went from 310lbs down to 255lbs. in a matter of months where my weight has now stabilized in the 255lb to 260lb range at 6'-4" tall. If I go down below that weight I get more lean but do not feel well and become too weak and lack energy and strength. That may change as I age and I most likely will need to lower my weight again at some point. But eating to maintain this current weight gives me plenty of energy to do all the things in life I need/like to do and I am no longer insulin resistant and my nerve pain is all but gone. Watch your carbs (I try and eat less than 200 grams of carbs per day, often 100 grams or less but you have to also enjoy life), try and eat 1gram of protein per lb of body weight, get regular consistent exercise, and do not eat anything from 7pm to 11am. I do not count calories and eat pretty much as much as want as long as I keep the carbs down. Not eating for those 16 hours allows a metabolic reset of sorts where each day is a new day to be your best instead of keep adding on to each day with bad eating habits slowly but surely becoming your worst. I would not think long term fasting would be any more beneficial than just fasting every single day and then still also getting all of the nutrition our bodies need to stay healthy. Keep in mind that men are also metabolically and hormonally different than women so it is probably not a very good idea to adopt eating habits that might otherwise work well for women. Life is short so don't deprive yourself but for sure don't over indulge either, balance is key, not extremes.
@GunitCPT
@GunitCPT 10 күн бұрын
I appreciate what you’re saying. You’ve got a decent idea. But honestly 200g of carbs a day is still a lot. You mentioned “you have to still enjoy life” You really should do a keto diet. Get the carbs under 50 a day and you will notice your taste buds change and you don’t even want them anymore and actually crave fat I’m an ex carbolic who had pre diabetes at 34. Im 38 now and eat. Ketovore diet (keto with heavy emphasis on meat). I feel 22 again and I actually don’t even enjoy carbs anymore. They are poisonous to humans. We are apex predators and predominantly meat eaters, not omnivores
@Joel-McConnell
@Joel-McConnell 10 күн бұрын
@@GunitCPT I did 50 grams and under for the first few months and not only felt like garbage but simply did not have enough energy to complete all the things I either need to or want to in a day, that is just not enough fuel for my needs. I am also trying to hold onto as much muscle for as long as possible and was wasting away on that amount. You need to be in a calorie surplus to grow muscle but at my age I no longer can grow much muscle so I make sure to stay ahead of the inevitable decline as long as I can. Everyone is a different size, has a different metabolism, and has different levels of excursion, ect.... and as long as you burn that amount of carbs off they are not harmful, only when you are sedentary which I am not. I run two businesses, workout, garden, hike, ect.....not a chance I can fuel my bodies needs on 50 carbs or less, unless I just sit by the pool trying to look pretty! lol! Not all carbs are the same, many natural sources are quite good for us and the types I try and eat mainly. I used to consume massive amounts of carbs, like a 1000 grams a day so 100 to 200 a day is fine for me now. I worked in construction most of my life which is extremely physically demanding as well as me being fairly large at the time at over 300 lbs. I would not make it through a single day if I did not consume such. I simply could not eat enough lean meat and veggies to generate the fuel my body needed back then. Once I retired from construction that is when I ran into problems and needed to make a change to my diet because I was no longer exerting myself to that level any longer. Carbs are like gas in the tank and without them you are not going to go anywhere very fast or for very long. Your body will begin to consume your muscle for energy and or you will have to be able to eat massive amounts of meat which is just not very affordable, practical or enjoyable for most people. Maybe you are much smaller than I am or more sedentary or have a very slow metabolism, ect.....Again everyone is different so do what works for you but this is what works best for me currently, I will change should I ever want or need to.....
@GunitCPT
@GunitCPT 9 күн бұрын
@@Joel-McConnell everyone really isn’t different, bar health conditions or genetic defects. We all run on ketones optimally. The reason the human body uses carbs first as a power source is to get rid of them, they are poisonous to the human body. Humans only need a teaspoon of glucose in our blood sugar to survive and we make that teaspoon ourselves from fats and proteins. There isn’t a single essential carbohydrate but there are many essential fatty acids and essential aminos acids which we would die if we didn’t consume them. I’m not sure what made you feel crap, it could have been many many things, but I can assure you that you aren’t special and that you don’t “need” carbs like you think you do. It’s all in your head I am 6ft3 and 215 lbs. I was about 240lbs when I got fat. I’m very active. Humans are carnivores and have evolved to eat basically 99% meat. You are a human, you’re no different.

I went on keto after a fecal microbiome testing showing i have massive overgrowth of strep and enterococcus. I couldn't digest food for 2 years.. After 6 months keto with some fasting included, then 1 rd of antibiotics that i had previously used multiple times (only lasted a week before all symptoms returned in the 3 times i took it), these overgrowth's were gone and Ive been cured for 6 years of this issue. This counteracts his point about there being more stuff in the body for parasites and bacteria to thrive. There is cancer clinics who use fasting with excellent results, it is widely known based of published medical evidence that most forms of cancer thrive on carbs/sugar. When given chemo and radiation, most people also struggle to eat food... Put 2 and 2 together and based off my own mother who had cancer recently and couldn't eat, guess what she beat it. There is also a published study called the Scottish man study. He was a morbidly obese Scottish male who fasted for a year with vitamins and salt as his supplements. He lost all his excess weight over that year and finished it in very good health, so there is evidence of long term fasting. You would think a guy who spends his time reading research and conducting it would know a little more.

If like me you tend to get pretty nauseous if you don't eat by 2pm or 3pm at latest in a day, intermittent fasting can apparently get you some of the benefits of fasting. (ie, all calories consumed within an 8 hour period in a day). I unintentionally fell into that after starting to work from home. I'd work out sometime in the morning, and then I wouldn't get hungry for another hour or so. The time kept getting pushed back. It ended up creating a strength plateau because I wasn't getting enough calories + protein to gain. Had to start force-feeding myself in the mornings to get my old appetite back to progress in strength. BUT, before doing that it was fantastic for weight loss (which I wasn't going for). I ended up razor thin. So if you want to lose weight while still maintaining strength - provided you train intensely - intermittent fasting while eliminating or all highly processed carbs aka trash calories is probably the easiest way. Note: this does not require enemas.

I think the less tangible benefit of fasting is the simplicity and lack of choice. When following a classic "diet" with calorie restriction, the choice of what to eat and portion control is a never ending debate and it can become incessant. But with a fast, it's very simple because you know you aren't eating anything that day, requiring less constant willpower in a sense.

I'm not a nutrition expert, but I agree a lot with what Lane said. Fasting is good from time to time if you want it as a "toxin cleanser", but I don't think it's the best thing to do in long term, especially at a highest competitive level like yours. I believe that combining it with high-fiber GREEN vegetables and high-nutritional value proteins would be a good complement to building lean muscle mass, having a proper body fat percentage, and increasing your strength level. The body needs to maintain a certain percentage of body fat for energy and to avoid catabolism.

You’ll likely end up with headaches and other side effects if you don’t have sodium and other electrolytes going in. Recommended electrolytes are sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, calcium. You can buy them as specific electrolyte tablets, or individually. Or as mixes for water.

The problem with alternate day fast research is it’s not really fasting for long enough to yield real results. The point of longer fasts is different than making up calorie loss the next day. Shd I don’t think he really understands that lol

@@mcfarvo Fibre and carbs are per definition non essential. So you cannot "lack" them from a biological standpoint. Our body produces Glucose easily with excess fats and protein. But that is not possible with carbs in reverse.

I guess Layne's counter argument might be that the extra release of growth hormone will likely only be enough to help quickly regain what was lost as a result of the fasting.

I practice daily 8 hours eating a lot then 16 hours fasting and its a great feeling of lightness and somehow its easier to achieve spiritual peace when no food is going in my system. I have also heard with fasting body starts to eat bad stuff in our body.

Could have summed this one up as....we don't know...there are no studies on extended fasts. I will say, anecdotally, everyone who does extended fasts....more than 30hr....they all love them and feel great. I never have really heard people complain or not like them....at least outside of those highly athletic folks who need/want that extra fuel. But just for weight loss/maintenance and overall health...i hear nothing but great things. I've only done a couple of 40ish hour fasts and I enjoyed them...felt good, inflammation goes away, etc, etc.

@@VeyroneR Oh, i'm aware that some people will get like this and if that's you, you have your answer if you should continue with any of it. How long did you last? Each time i've tried it the 20-24hr mark was the worst, but once you get past that last gasp of hunger everything changes and becomes easy from there. Are you an athlete or big work out person? If you are, then i would imagine getting into fasting at a much slower rate than just jumping into a 3-4 day fast is a good idea because your body is so used to the sugar/carbs as energy instead of fats, etc Are you male or female? I've seen more females tend get the shakes and headaches more than males...i'm assuming because of the hormone differences, not sure.

True fasting (water/micros-only fasting) holds no unique benefits over a "protein-sparing modified fast" or "fasting-mimicking very low calorie diet," and all 3 of those offer in the long-term no unique benefits over a proper diet without fasting (other than sleep/overnight fasting like usual) that results in the same body composition

Layne Norton's advice is best for most people and simple. However if you research fasting and all the different pathways it sets as more time goes by you can see the potential benefits that can apply, which may fit your particular needs for your body. On the muscle preservation side growth hormone rises on a fast and has a protective anti catabolic effect on muscle tissue, so eating once a day a large meal and working out just before you should be able to some decent non Mr Universe type muscle pretty easy.
