Piano playing Lego robot. Uses one main driving motor, and 3 motors to control positioning of: The single finger of the left hand on the first note, the two fingers of the right hand on the third note, and the third finger of the right hand on the 4th note (sometimes).

If the inventor of this awesome robot pianist just used a sound output speaker in another room where we can't hear the machine crunching sound no one would possibly guess that it was played by the machine. Such insane art of machinery. Just impressive

ooh hard to say as it was quite a while ago but I'd say probably about a month to make and a week to program? Somewhere around that. This was when I spent a fair bit of the day playing with Lego though...

Hey man i just wanna say that you are blessed man. I swear to god. What you have done in this video with the machines playing guitar and also completely make them synch. Dude i must say you did it from the bottom of your heart. Don't quit man you are a genius. I mean who on Earth would possibly think of a machine playing musical instruments. Super Impressive! No words can describe how amazing this creation is! Yes, the chords are repetitive, but that is the only way to make it run only using four motors. I have been wanting to make one, but I would need more motors, the NXT only comes with 3. Amazing Creation!

Thanks! Yeah I had to try and find the easiest song I could (that wasn't chopsticks or something like that) and it was only just possible... I've got a few more motors now so maybe in the future I'll make a better one :)

Yay! you could link two or more robots together as well. I might try one that just plays chords, like c, g, and f. That doesn't sound too hard. I had the idea to make a robot that walked back and forth across the keys, but that sounded hard.

A few servos, stepper motors, motors, an arduino kit (or a mindstorm lego heart/controller) and $400,00 spare in your pocket for the lego parts...lol

The whole thing is Lego - controlled by Lego Mindstorms. It can get expensive though - depends how much Lego you want!

A great priceless hobby though :) I am in college now, so that may be one of my main hobbies once I have more time. And I must do something related to mechatronics and control systems on my final year project next year. Thank you for the upload, it inspires new enthusiasts on this subject :)

It is a great hobby - keeps your mind active and the creative juices flowing - I only got back into Lego about 18 months ago (and hadn't really used it since I was a kid) and I'm loving it. And when you are an adult and have a job you can buy as much as you want instead of having to wait for birthdays etc :P If you want some more inspiration, search youtube for "mechbass" it uses stepper motors and arduino and reads midi files and is absolutely ridiculous. :D That was my inspiration to build a Lego guitar bot...

how do you not have more subs!!!??? amazing work. i know how hard it is to make a program that can do that let alone a lego robot that plays it itself. CHALENGE: make a lego robot that can record your voice and play the matching pitch so if you sang it would play the tune a second or two later!
