I found out about Nanavira Thera through Stephen Batchelor's book on secular Buddhism. The entire book and work of Nanavira Thera itself are very enlightening to understand what it is to be a Buddhist.

What was Nyanamoli's teaching on suicide? Maybe you can do it without defilement only if you're an arahant?

The suttas would indicate that to be the case. Only giving up a body without an intention to take up another one is blameless. A shorthand is, if there is a feeling of suffering, then such an act is not allowed.
