This is my first new 1/8 on road engine. Some engine break in footage here. The break in process was almost done here.
Some notes and observations regarding breaking in an rc nitro engine below, scroll down!
For those who don't know: during the engine break in procedure the engine must be run slower than what it will eventually run when the break in is finished. Until that it will be setup so that it won't go fast even if you went for full throttle. That is why the car here is going quite slowly. But it was going even more slowly in the beginning of the process. It was going at a snail's pace at that time.
It was about to start raining (few drops on during the last two laps) so I thought I have to stop but continued right after ending the recording. These engines don't like rain very much.
This RC car class is so fun that even the motor break in procedure is fun.
Engine: Novarossi .21R-PTA
Car: HB R8
Location: Tattarisuo, Helsinki, Finland.
Before I got this engine an initial breaking in by the seller company had already been done. They used a breaking in bench and had ran a kind of "normal" breaking in bench procedure ( different stages using different RPMs etc..). To describe that procedure would be a very long story.
If the engine is totally new and never run and you are not going to use a breaking bench then you must be very careful with the breaking in procedure. There is plenty of information about that on the internet.
When I took the engine (and the car) on the track first the engine was set so rich (high speed needle) that the car barely started moving, max revs were so low that the clutch barely engaged.
A special break in fuel was used. Two tanks first. Then slightly leaned high speed needle, like one minute or two. Temperature was checked to be something like 80 degrees celsius. Then ran two tanks again. After that the engine was stopped and cooled down.
Then the high speed needle was again leaned a minute and continued the cycle.
No special fuel is necessary. You just must make sure that the engine is rich enough. I used a total of one litre of the special break in fuel. After that a normal 16% fuel was used. There is less oil in it so when changing the fuel to the regular one the high speed needle must be set richer again so that the engine would rev approximately same way than it did with the last tank of the break in fuel.
How to know it is rich enough? Like I said it is rich enough when it has major troubles in moving from the pits. The revs pick up slowly and not very high and it just revs so high that the car barely starts moving. You can then drive it full throttle because it wouldn't get going without the full throttle.
While you are continuing the cycle at some point the engine will start revving high enough that it can engage the second gear. You don't want to break in the engine using the second gear. You want to use the throttle so that the second gear is not engaged. If the gear goes up then you can just reduce throttle slightly so that it will change back to first gear.
If the second gear engages in the very first tanks the high speed needle is not rich enough. There should be something like total of three to five minutes of turning before the engine should be revving enough for the second gear engagement. Of course the three to five minutes of turning must not be done in one setup change but in increments of one minute or so. So that it will require something like five to six tanks before the high speed needle is about to be at a position where the second gear engagement would be possible.
Before starting the engine with the starter box you may want to check the piston is on the lowest point. The engine is very tight and if the piston is near the top dead center point the starting of the engine migh fail. The piston could get stuck on the top point because there has not been enough momentum for it to go past the top dead center. When you position the piston on the lowest point the starter box has better possibilities to get enough momentum for the piston. The position of the piston can easily be checked by rotating the screw on the end of the crankshaft (the screw that keeps the clutch package together). You can notice the are where the piston moves very freely and then just estimate the center point of that area.
Remember always to pre heat the engine before starting the engine with the starter box. You may want to make the heating in more than one small periods so that the heat in the heated engine cooler will transfer to the whole engine. And then heat some more and wait for the heat to transfer again. And repeat one more time. If you heat the engine a too long time with the heat gun the engine cooler temperature will rise possibly too high and the glow plug could be damaged. When you have waited like a minute and the temperature of the engine cooler is still something like 70-80 degrees celsius you are done with the heating.

That's a beautiful track! Nothing like that around me... :(

That track appears to be on an inline, which must make it quite challenging on the decents entering corners.

Thank you for your comments. I have been thinking to remove this video because I don't really know whether there is any point in this. At the time I was just so happy to have my first good engine. Sorry I actually don't know what the inline means here :(. Last summer I did a bit better but still need training with tuning an engine. I think I broke one engine at the very last track day of this years summer :(. When it comes to summer 2023 I have kind of mixed feelings. On the other hand I feel frustrated because of not being as good with the engines than what I hoped after summer 2022 because I tried to learn quite a lot. With this summer (2022) I had my best moments with O.S. engine. Then I changed the conrod on that and during that process I decided to run a Max engine because I bought one of those (a used one). Don't know whether anybody is interested in this text but will continue anyway :). Well, I have two Max engines. One is a used one with all new inner parts and another one was said to be driven 8l with a new conrod that was already done with the break-in. I selected the used one because wanted just to drive. I had some strange issues with suddenly lean and I thought am I crazy. Then I noticed the HSN went lean by itself (!!) when driving on the track. I have a witness on this so it is not just me. The needle changed it position by itself. So maybe new gaskets for the needle will cure it. But when I had the another max engine I just switched the carbs. But I kept having odd troubles, something what I did not run into with the O.S. engine. I am not saying O.S. is better than Max or anything but still there seemed to be something too hard to figure out by myself. When trying to lean the LSN I came to a point where the engine did not hesitate in anyway when letting the engine idle for a while and going full throttle after that. But, when leaning a bit more the LSN the engine started to hesitate for a short while before the revs got to the max. And when I tried to richen the LSN to get the hesitation away I had to richen it much much more than what my last leaning of the LSN was before the hesitation came. Doesn't it sound there is a problem? Glow plug was ok, that was checked and tried new one, more than one. So next summer I am trying the O.S. again and see that can I do the tuning ok with that and see that does it behave the situations like I think it should behave.

I have an old buggy I recently got which I was told was stored for 10 plus years but I don’t believe it was ever finished running in. What would be the best method for breaking it in to be on safe side?

Better send your mechanics to check the temperature every few laps and reduce the number of "wet" laps.

Sorry have to ask: with the wet laps you mean the laps when engine is running way too rich and perhaps even loosing temperature totally? Yes, I figured it out afterwards that should have gotten more rapidly closer to the right settings so that at least the temps would have been almost there. Now they weren't.

@@OnroadRC_and_OffroadRC_Finland Suppose that there is a narrow range of optimal temperature that the mechanical condition of the engine is the best, we should run the engine at that temperature as soon as possible because at the other temperatures the tear and wear and also the tightness of the cylinder and piston are not the same. For example if the engine temperature drops after two rich laps, we can reduce the fuel and the engine temperature should go up again. We can repeat this process two or three times until there is just a small trace of smoke at top rpm while the temperature is not exceeding the plug temperature. Then you finished your break in. Just my sense. Enjoy.

We are looking to build a similar track layout. If you don't mind sharing, what are the track dimensions and specifications? Thank you.

Hello. Sorry for the delay in replying. I am so sorry, I am just a guy with this hobby and I don't know anything specific about this track of our club :(. One thing that came to my mind now is that this track is quite harsh for the engines. Very flowing yes but even in many of the cornes engine is quite loaded because there is many tilted corners with lots of grip. Just a thought.

Hello there! Yes this feels nice. A quite new layout. Wasn't there when the older layout was on but everybody has said this is much better. This is located in Helsinki, Finland. Aipworks Circuit its name is, visible in Google maps. If name Teemu Leino rings a bell this is kind of his hometrack.

This was my very first engine , over a year ago. It was a NOVA ROSSI ENGINE FLASH .21R-PTA, bought it here www.future-rc.fi/product_details.php?p=67900 I managed to drive it too lean. Still hoping to get it running, it was a nice engine. But I think I made some beginner's mistakes with it :( Now I have one O.S. R21 eurospec and one Max RP9.S. I don't yet know to which brand I am going to focus in the future. I think it would make sense to use only one brand only.

Pista molto bella ,la guida è buona, ma migliorabile, il motore, che comunque rimane acceso, non è carburato bene. Bel video, saluti dall'Italia!

Yes thank you for your message. Yes, the engine was very new and so it was the break in process was going on and that is why it was so rich. Now I have a different car (Shepherd) but the same engine still in use :).
