with the heat dissipation topic- I can't quite believe that carbon fibre conducts heat better than steel- the way I guess you could test it is to shot 10 rounds, close the bolt and pop a thin digital thermometer down the barrel of each, the lack of air movement and the thermometer being surrounded by the hot barrel would show quite nicely which is hottest....

As for me, I like them all. Wood, synthetic or carbon fiber. I have them all. One fact that was not mentioned when it comes to the carbon fiber barrels is that they can shoot more rounds before the hits start to walk. If you shoot a steel barrel for accuracy, you will note that at some point, the rounds will start climbing high right if you don't let the barrel cool down. It takes about 3 times that round count in a carbon fiber barrel before you even see a hint of that. It's never an issue when hunting. I use a single shot K95 for all my hunting. For people who like to shoot at great deal at the range, it's one benefit of a carbon fiber barrel.

a good way to measure heat disapation is to use a laser thermometer and measure at inside diameter of the muzzle or at the breech. this should be far less effected by barrel thickness and much more effected by fluting (surface area) vs CF wrapping.

As someone who has been at the forefront of composites research and technology for over 40 years in aerospace, yes, its stiffer and lighter, but its less damage tolerant. And once it gets scuffed it'll look tatty. If you want something that looks flashy to show off with fine. For me give me a piece o wood everytime !

I have been in the boat industry for 40 years, Carbon is a big selling point its light & stiff, but its got sod all impact resistance, Mix it with kevlar or other fibres it gets more resilient. Snake oil.

EGAD! You're standing on the stock of a Browning X-bolt Pro! I own that first rifle shown and you're scaring me with that trick , "My Precious" is a Browning A-Bolt Pro in 6.5 PRC. Mine is 6 lbs. 3 oz. "naked" (no scope, no ammo). My particular rifle will shoot Hornady 143 gr. "Precision Hunter" ELD-X ammo in 1/2" to 3/4" five shot groups at 100 yards. What I really like about my Bolt Pro stock is that the CF wrap is actually two "socks" that meet at the pistol grip "neck". That way it is not only stronger but there is no mould mark down the middle of clam shell type stocks that are laid up in strips and are weaker.

the overall quality of the carbon fiber is down to the quality of the weave the resin used and the person making it.nowadays carbon fiber isnt uncommon in custom catapults thats been made into micarta in people sheds all over the uk. good video

PS : BTW ....... What you are really buying into ( in my opinion ) is ""Hype !!!"" The raw material cost these days of ""Commercial Grade"" i.e. non-aerospace, carbon fibre is probably cheaper than a decent piece o wood ! So dont be fooled by techy sales patter, unless of course you regularly jump up n down on your rifle.... which I tend not to do if I can avoid it 😂😂😂

Lol... I'd still rather have a nice bit of timber and if I want something rugged I'll go for synthetic. As for carbon fibre dissipating heat better than steel... I'm not convinced... I thought carbon was an insulator, hence why it remains cooler to the touch. Can't halt progress though I suppose. 😁

I'm an engineer. Let me tell you something, if a body is cool to touch, it's good at dissipating heat. Carbon is not an insulator. It's one of the best known Electrical conductors on the planet. The thermo synthetic resin that's used to mould carbon fibre is an insulator if it's a perfect insulator it's better at not absorbing heat in the first place! Carbon fibre is the future! It's lightweight, available everywhere in abundance, great thermal and electrical properties, easy to work with and does not corrode to environmental factors! What else is better than carbon fibre? Only a diamond.

@@cypher10297 why would a diamond be better than carbon fiber? You sure you're an engineer? If so which specific type? Anyway, a diamond may be harder but more fragile to impact. Also diamonds are naturally slick with a naturally oily surface which stays fairly clean. So in this application of a rifle stock, if it was even possible, made entirely of diamonds would be the worst material to date ever on a rifle. Also, what happens if you bump an electric fence with a carbon fiber stock? Little bit off subject but I was wandering myself as carbon is a great electrical conductor which is why it's been used for spark plug wires for a long time. Wasn't sure if these stocks are electrically insulated due to some resin which is used to form it or not? Also, heat dissipation matters more in steel because it warps if different areas are different temps. Personally, I think most these companies could likely have no clue what's happening and only know it works. Maybe they should be measuring the temperature of the steel bore after shooting the same rounds to actually tell if it's dissipating heat quicker. The bore is still made of steel so that part will still absorb the heat. Personally, i believe no matter the heat dissipation that carbon fiber likely more accurate over multiple shots because it is ridged and doesn't warp with heat variances and the steel being wrapped with anything could likely more evenly dissipate the heat along the steel prolonging the point at which the steel barrel warps from temperature variances throughout the bore. Barrels have long been free floated to help dissipate heat more evenly by allowing more air flow around the part closer to the stock. Anyway, just a thought.

@@jackle842000 You have to empty your cup to gain real knowledge. All you have is confused knowledge about the top layer details most of the things. When I said diamond is better than carbon fibre is because, it’s a sarcastic phrase that says CFRP is the best available construction material on the planet and only a diamond is better than CFRP in terms of structural strength to weight ratio. We don’t use diamonds to build stuff, because duh! We don’t have that much of a supply to build stuff with diamonds nor is it easy to make or mould or carve things out of diamond. It was a sarcastic message. Don’t confuse yourself. Don’t think too much. You missed the point entirely.

@@cypher10297naw... Carbon Fibre is used to make the barrels stiffer and lighter (less steel for same or higher stiffness). Heat doesn't matter as much (dissipation) as long as your follow up shots aren't affected (warping) but again, cf is keeping those barrels straight even if they're hotter. The harmonics are also better on stiff barrels, increasing accuracy (in this case with less weight). In terms of accuracy aka longevity the rifling is what matters, heat cycles not so much. The weight matters mostly when you lug that thing around all day. But most long range competition shooters use heavy contour steel barrels for that reason. They really go through barrels and they're a lot cheaper to manufacture and replace. They obv don't have to carry them all day.
