I thought I could use the opportunity to talk a bit about the cutscene formats used in the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection and in the old DOS and PlayStation versions.

It's sad the original tapes were lost but that's not unusual considering how games aren't seen as something of a cultural artifact so often even source code and art just gets discarded as soon as the gold files are compiled and shipped. I believe much of this happened also at Squaresoft with their games (iirc, FFXIII's source code doesn't exist anymore as they literally deleted it).

I am really sad they didn't include an (optional!) download for "Original Cutscenes". The upscaling in some cases is pretty nice but the original MS DOS versions can work well and certainly some examples just become this blurry mess. Glad you modded it in will be downloading!

I really hope the devs don't take this as an insult. We know they did the best they could and to their credit, some of the cutscenes do look really good, namely the GDI and NOD campaign briefings look fantastic. Buuuut then you get to cutscenes like the memorable Stalin one in Red Alert and it looks really bad.
@NoStringsPrd
@NoStringsPrd 3 жыл бұрын
Oh certainly, no insult to the devs, I respect what they were able to achieve in the FMVs. But yeah, unfortunately the Stalin cutscene was never ported to PlayStation so that's the best they had to go from.

Our brains are great at interpolating the detail in a low resolution image/video. The remaster's upscaling sharpens everything into a muddy mess that is hard to look at. i get why they wen't this route, but having the option to switch would have been preferable. Options are good!

I can't stand the upscaled cutscenes at their native resolution. But I play the remasters with an injected CRT shader that both restores their nostalgic aesthetic and knocks the level of detail back down to what they can bear. I wish this had been an official optional inclusion, because in the end, the solution is elegant.

Some of the detail in the upscales is the 'Phantom AI Swirlies' Something about simulating CRT phosphors squashes them right down.

@@NoStringsPrd Yeah, Advanced_CRT (SweetFX) and Lotte's CRT (FxShaders) do a good job. Advanced_CRT is more powerful but needs the settings tuned for specific display resolution and screenshots can't be scaled. Lotte's is nice and easy though.

Y'know, it would be pretty interesting if they ever tried to do the cutscenes again from scratch- if they could ever find the original actors and actually bothered to do something that painstaking which sadly would never happen :(

Hi there! This mod is such a fantastic idea, even though I struggle to go back from the upscales. Out of curiosity, would it be possible to use the EVA briefings from your mod and keep the rest of the cutscenes as remastered? The VQA EVA videos really are preferable to the upscales.
@NoStringsPrd
@NoStringsPrd 11 ай бұрын
Thank you! You could probably do it manually, if you navigate to the worshop mods folder somewhere like Steam > steamapps > workshop > content > (numbers) > (mod numbers) > TD DOS Cutscenes > Data > Art > Movies > TD, then you can backup/delete any video files you don't want I think the EVA cutscenes you want are gdi5, gdi8a, gdi8b, nod4a and nod4b, just from a quick skim. You can download RAD Video Tools to be able to play bk2 files on your end if you want to go through them My folder for C&C Remastered Collection is called 1213210 and TD's mod folder is 2205671508, but I've no idea if these numbers are the same for everyone

Is there any chance of uploading these to Nexus Mods or similar? I play on Origin / Gamepass and so don't have access to the steam workshop, and downloader tools don't work with C&C remastered mods (unless you already own the game on steam). Would love to 'demaster' the cutscenes while still enjoying the improvements in-game.

i dont get it. original fmv's was 320*156 so aspect ratio is 2.05. so how they did get aspect 1.78 for 16/9 displays? they just stretch fmv's losing original aspect ratio? or original fmv's was basicly squeezed for 2.05 aspect so game stretch it to 1.78?

Shit. I just want the action-FMV's to be integer scaled with no interpolation. The briefings are all better in the remaster.
@NoStringsPrd
@NoStringsPrd 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, you might be able to download the mods, copy the mod to your local mods folder, then in the mod just delete the videos of the briefings, so it should play these integer scaled VQAs for the in-between cutscenes, while playing the Remastered briefings. I'll have a play tomorrow and see how well this works. This should allow you to customise which cutscenes you want I think the workshop files should just be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\[numbers], then find the folder for these mods, the folders will just have numbers in the names. Open the folders inside until you come to .bk2 files (if you want to play them you'll need RAD Video Tools), and just delete the gdi[number].bk2 and nod[number].bk2 files, which are the breifings. Then copy the whole folder to the game's local mods folder (which I think is in Documents>CnCRemastered) in case Steam decides to fix the mod by redownloading over it, not sure if it'll do that. Then you should be able to activate this custom mod in-game.

@@NoStringsPrd Hm. I thought the video said it was upscaled with Nearest Neighbor, which is subtly different than integer scaling. Hey it's good work though, because in all honesty, even nearest neighbor makes those action cutscenes easier on the eyes. Like you showed in Desolate, it's a prime example of why interpolation and softening was not the best route for these cutscenes. It's a monumental effort the developers took all the same, so much respect to them.
@NoStringsPrd
@NoStringsPrd 3 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely, huge respect to the devs for the effort on upscaling hundreds of old FMVs! I neeved to be honest, but I hope it didn't come across as disrespectful! I think I read that Joe Bostic took a personal interest in the FMV remastering So yes, these mods are nearest neighbour rather than integer scaled (I misspoke in the last comment); the original VQAs are slightly vertically squashed, so I stretched then vertically to 16:9. The mod files are 1920x1080, while the originals are (for the most part) 320x156, which is a ratio of 16:7.8 rather than 16:9, so integer scaling would yield 1920x936 and would look squashed. If you look really closely you'll be able to see a few of the rows of the big chunky pixels are slightly taller than others, but it's very hard to tell and it's preferable in my opinion, since DOS is supposed to be stretched (it's why the assets are squashed in the first place, MS-DOS's internal res was something like 640x400 but was stretched to fill 640x480 monitors or something). I don't think it's possible to guarantee linear scaling since the videos are just going to be stretched to fill the screen, so if you have a larger monitor the FMVs are going to be stretched linearly slightly (still looks pretty decent on mine though). These FMVs are best viewed on 1920x1080 displays for pixel-sharp playback, but they look pretty good on my 2560x1440. I was considering that resolution for the mod, but the files are plenty big enough as it is!

@NoStringsPrd
@NoStringsPrd 3 жыл бұрын
@@PimpUigi Oh, my apologies for not getting back to you, I forgot where we'd started after the last reply, that's my bad. So yes, if you want only some cutscenes to be VQA and for some to be Bink; 1. Download the two mods (unfortunately I made a mistake with the RA mod, it also contains the TD cutscenes and so is twice the size it should be. I'm planning on fixing this soon but my upload speed isn't great) 2. Navigate to the workshop mods folder, something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\[numbers]. The folders for the two mods might be 2205671508 and 2205943028 unless they're random 3. Copy the contents of these folders to the game's local mods folders: [user]\Documents\CnCRemastered\Mods. Copy these files such that the root Tiberian_Dawn folder contains TD DOS Cutscenes folder, TD DOS Cutscenes.workshop.json and the .jpg, not the folder with loads of numbers. Same for the RA cutscenes mod in the Red_Alert folder. 4. For each mod, open the Cutscenes folder and keep going until you find the .bk2 files. Then just rename the ones you don't want, or flat out delete them. The game will just play the default cutscenes instead. To play these cutscenes in Windows to preview them, download RAD Video Tools and you should just be able to double click them. The briefings should be easy to find though

@NoStringsPrd
@NoStringsPrd 3 жыл бұрын
Sprites are more typically pixel art computer graphics. I don't think I could call something like this 'video' per se (www.fightersgeneration.com/characters3/ryu-bigsuper.gif) and this is closer to how VQA as a format is structured, but pixel art graphics like these can be used to create the facsimilie of video such that the lines of definition are blurred
