The eighth generation Volkswagen Golf R has just landed in Australia. European vehicle specialist Underground Performance were quick to jump on one. We’ve covered some of their previous Golf’s through their R&D phase and this car will be no different. With a bump up in power over the outgoing Mk7.5 we were keen to see what the new Mk8 AWD Golf R puts out in 100% factory stock form, and by the end of the day the team had already begun the modification process.

The most understanding R master 🙌 At least 800 miles of stretching and also a beefy oily tire bigger size would help the car age better and won't start squeeze noises here & there 245 45 19 will obsorb the bumps and Volkswagen need it. Continental more better than Michelin and avoid pirelli at all costs. Hankook is better than pirelli, Dunlop nit bad But Continental oil does everything better and more comfortable even on stage 3 R

@@TheWretchedWorld I don’t think that is a price cut specifically but yes there is some things that make my blood boil. The volume and heat and cooling controls are not light up. @@upbeatmantis86 the 7th gen has proven to be reasonably reliable by now. At least, far more so than its predecessors. Its Achilles' heel seems to be the water pump/thermostat housing leaking and requiring replacement, and some 2015 models had bad turbos that would crap out. Plus our Aussie market models got the dual injection (direct+port), making carbon build up on the inlet valves a non issue, unlike the 5th and 6th gens. Anecdotally, I know someone with a heavily modified mk7 GTI (230kw or so) that's done 180,000km. Has never skipped a beat and the interior is holding up great

@tally5k339
@tally5k339 2 жыл бұрын
@@upbeatmantis86 yeah I've heard some real horror stories about the 5th and 6th gens in particular. They had some pretty serious flaws that could do some gnarly damage if left unchecked. Namely the FSI cam follower in the mk5's case and the TSI timing chain tensioner in the mk6's case. The powerplant of a mk8 though should be pretty stout. The DSG has been refined over 20 years (going back to the mk4 R32) and the EA888 engine is in its 4th or 5th generation by now. In my experience with older versions of this engine, a bit of mechanical sympathy seems to go a long way. For example the general consensus is that once the oil temperature hits 80 C, you're free to hoon it as it was meant to be driven. Also for the mk7's case (which the mk8 is mostly an evolution of), the R motor was a bit more overbuilt in order to handle the extra power vs a GTI. I would expect the 8th gen to be similar. Personally though I'd be weary about the interior electronics in the mk8. Opinions aside, it's still a fairly new vehicle so there's still some kinks to be worked out with that tech. Have heard complaints of the head unit being awfully slow to respond when it's first fired up of a morning for example
@upbeatmantis86
@upbeatmantis86 2 жыл бұрын
@@tally5k339 yeah I’ll probably wait a little perhaps a year or two and see how it goes from other owners, as usually the first batch are prone to recalls etc.. as long as it goes well for the first 5 years, im satisfied.

After driving the previous version the one thing that put me off this car is the transmission. Hesitant off the line, jerky and holding gears when just trying to cruise. For goodness sake get rid of this terrible tranny and put a torque converter in it, just like they did with the regular golf range.

This transmission is very smooth. I agree the previous gen DQ250 was like driving a race car. Not smooth. This one you wouldn’t even be able to tell it’s a DCT

@@android175 torque converter trans are way better. Stronger too and have less problems. Sounds to me you have yet to pay for any repair, you will hate them after that trust me. There is a reason why the RS6 uses a torque converter..

Why do you want to modify the car? It’s a new car you’re going to mess up any warranty it has If something like the gearbox should fail then you’re going to pay a lot of money

If you modify a car outside the warranty and it breaks you’re gonna pay. If you modify the car while in warranty and it breaks you’re gonna pay. So the point here is it doesn’t matter.

Each new version is better than the last 🙄 no shit. That's the whole point isn't it.. of course all they do is up the boost each time. It's still a weak 4 cylinder
