VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky ( / simonostrovsky ) joined On The Line to discuss the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), and his new documentary “The Smartest Guy in the Sea.”
More than 2,000 migrants have drowned while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea already in 2015, according to the International Organization for Migration. As the Mediterranean migrant crisis continues in the face of apparent government inaction, a private organization has stepped in to help.
Founded by American millionaire Christopher Catrambone and his Italian wife Regina Catrambone, the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) aims to provide search and rescue assistance to the thousands of people fleeing conflict and economic hardship in the Middle East and Africa.
VICE News went to meet the team behind MOAS before it launched its operation from Malta.

Choose your side: -Defend your identity, culture, heritage, and fight off the immigrant invasion with the belief that every immigrant is bad. -Defend people, no matter what their skin color, nationality, or religion, who are escaping from poverty and war with the belief that there are good and bad people, as everywhere else. This is basically the two sides in Europe now.

Brandon Austria Defend your identity, culture, heritage, and fight off the immigrant invasion with the belief that NOT every immigrant is bad ;-) how about this option. Most europeans would actually love to see nuclear physicists, doctors, skiled engineers, architects, artists and other skilled labour to come to live in EU... but unskilled soon to be unenployed welfare recipients who often does not even like democracy and hate white ppl? Not so much.

***** "Most" Europeans? You say that as you knew the opinion of the majority of Europeans. The fact is, there are many Europeans that don't want to see a single non-European in Europe, a single non-White on Europe. They don't want any immigrants at all, whether skilled or unskilled. Because they think multiculturalism is a threat and that immigration will destroy their culture and heritage. There are different opinions on each individual, and thus a variety of view points on immigration. But you say "most" as if that is what the majority of Europeans think. I gotta call hogwash on that.

First of, you don't call people names if you don't like their comments. Except if you're a sensitive Israeli. It is a fact, that Israel does not accept immigrants and complicates bureaucracy, in order to dissuade the immigrants from going there. Been to Israel many times bud, I know...

+Tommy Rinis The State of Israel was created for many purposes, the main one being providing a nation-state for the Jewish people and keeping the Jewish people alive. They have very limited resources there are barely enough to meet the needs of the Jewish and Arab citizens of the state, so Israel is not in a position to help them. And even like that, there are more than 50,000 African refugees living and surviving in Israel. Because Israel 's missions in order of importance are the survival of the Jewish people and solidarity with other victims of genocide second to the best of their abolity

Andrew Harrington well my grand parents were not lucky like you or me to be borned into nice life. They were born few year before WW2... just after their parents finished rebuilding their lives after WW1.... our ancestors managed to rebuild their countries after WW1 and WW2 and we are talking about moon-like landscape in some cases... if they want to improve their lives, they should try it first at their homes. Im not against saving lives but Turkey is pretty safe country they can stay there.

America should re-open Ellis Island and take in a fair share of these illegal immigrants coming by boats. The Americans caused havoc in the middle-east after invading Afghanistan and Iraq, now Europe pays the price. America is a country made up of immigrants, except the natives. Europe is not, we are the natives to our lands and need to take care of our own first in poor financial times.

P.S Obama invaded libya with no congressional approval afaik, only UN approval. That democracy yo!

We can no longer ignore the problems caused by European Countries. At first we thought that democracy was going to be restored in the Middle East, and North Africa. Instead we have now militia groups terrorizing their own populations. Why couldn't this problem be solved after the invasion of Iraq or even Afghanistan? The solutions for this problems are very simple, The countries that have been invaded by the European countries need rebuilding. Electrical power, water systems, gas systems, communications, roads, hospitals, schools, shops, postal deliveries, factories, transport systems, railways, etc all need rebuilding. Keep in mind that all of the rebuilding should have been done after the invasion. We are now dealing with the consequences due to lack of vision from our leaders, that were shortsighted enough on their plans before spreading "democracy" around the world. If we in the West enjoy the fruits of Capitalism, how could we miss out on this opportunity to do business? Peace = prosperity. Prosperity = Jobs

I think it's important to be compassionate and value human life. Else we become Nazi-like apathetic creatures. People are always going to try their hardest to escape desperate situations, so stop trying to stop them. It's time for governments to instead focus on fixing governments internal workings so that citizens no longer feel the need to flee.

'Because immigration just isn't popular'? That's an incredibly biased and non-comprehensive statement. I am personally pro immigration, but housing migrants is expensive, worsens the housing crisis, changes a nation's cultural identity (for better or worse is a personal opinion) and can alienate the indigenous population of European countries. Don't make out that it's just because Europeans (an incredibly broad group of people to all you Americans who think Europe is like a United States of Europe) don't fancy picking these people up. Don't just reject these people's opinions Simon they deserve equal respect and exploring, even if you find them as disagreeable as I do,
@florin1426

5 minutes into the video, I have to ask : You expect a country that is the target for illegal immigration to aid the illegal immigrants to cross the border ? Why not use one's Navy to drop anchor in African ports and asks who wants to go to Europe, to prevent people trying with their own means. So many people die on the Mexican-Amerikan border, I ask myself why the border patrol doesnt prevent this by organising a bus service for the illegal immigrants. When you are asking a country's government to do more for illegal immigrants you are asking the very poorest of that country to do more, to wait a bit longer for help, from a country they contributed to, in order for people that gave nothing to receive everything they need, because its urgent...Its a hostage situation not a social situation, and you are asking all countries to chip in for the ransom money.

Secondly the migrants are not being sent to England, it's mostly the Maltese and Italians that are receiving them. And trust me Malta never did anything to any country to be treated like this. Actually it was attacked, pillaged etc... for many centuries. So get your facts straight before you post an barely readable comment.

i really respect Simons reporting for VICE. he has done an outstanding job reporting from various fronts, Ukraine being one that peaked my interest especially. but as with many other comments on here, i feel like the EU cannot be expected to bear this burden of mass exodus. there was a time in this world (in the VERY near past) where people fought for what they believed in. obviously women & children cannot be expected to bear these burdens,(Kurdish Forces fighting IS/Daesh have many women in their ranks, think of THAT Syrian men running to Europe) but for any able bodied male that claims to love their heritage, should be willing to fight and die for their country, or ANY country they seek asylum from. if you continue to run from your problems or your countrys problems and expect someone else to take care of them for you, there will quickly come a time where their is no where left to run, and the state of world events appears to point to that time being uncomfortably soon..

[wall of text below]: The migrant crisis, far more than the Greece or Ukraine conflicts, has forced the EU to think about what it's obligations are and what it's identity will be going into the future: Either it accepts that as part of a union the migrant crisis affects all members equally not just those on the coast, and demands a coordinated effort, not the fragmentary responses and domestic 'not our problem' bickering that has plagued it so far. OR alternatively the EU retracts to a strictly 'monetary union' model that accepts it can not/will not deal with social or cultural issues that individual members face. One option would make for a far stronger Europe, but it requires the leaders of the EU to face problems beyond their own borders and adopt an outward looking rather than 'us vs' them' mentality'. They can start with the migrant crisis.

Simon I am a fan of your work and of Vice news and I watch every documentary and report as I think it is the best unbiased news reporting. But as I am maltese and live here in malta, and I know the problem well I think you missed the bigger picture what the population thinks. You should have interviewed the regular average maltese person not Norman Lowell he is a nutcase that is why he never gets elected.
