Pine martens are elusive and difficult to watch in the wild, so when I track down an adorable pine marten family in Scotland's Ardnamurchan peninsula I get a rare glimpse into their secret, wild lives.

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Scotland's pine martens
These pine martens were filmed on the Ardnamurchan peninsula in the west coast of Scotland where there is a thriving population.
Conservation
In the 1900’s predator control and habitat loss almost drove this species to extinction in the UK and these animals are still very rare in England.
Tracks and signs
To find the pine martens I look for scat piles, droppings that these animals, like most mustelids use to mark their territory with their droppings.
Nocturnal animals
Pine martens are mostly nocturnal, but can be active during the day.
Pine marten diet
In the wild, pine martens eat anything from fruits and berries to small mammals and birds. To encourage one to show itself, I spread peanut butter onto a rock and a woodland branch.
Good climbers
Pine martens are extremely agile and can climb vertical tree trunks with ease. They have long sharp claws which help them grip on slippery rocks and trees.
Solitary animals
Pine martens are mostly solitary, until the breeding season, which is July and August.
So, when I spot three on my cameras I know it must be a family. The youngsters are so playful!
Its great to see so many pine martens thriving here on the Ardnamurchan peninsula!

A side takeaway of this video: it's not just dogs and humans who like peanut butter, half the woodland seems to be into it! Lovely to see these animals, and their neighbours 🤎

Your patience and endurance, Robert, rising early and staying up late to see the animals is impressive. You just need a machine that ejects more peanut butter after each visitation. (I wondered if one should get "low sodium" when it's for animals). As a child, I thought a pine marten was a bird since we never saw them in Texas - well it does sound like it should be a bird. It's so nice to see them thriving.

He probably used one of the natural trans fat, preservative and salt free versions that don't add other species oils either. They usually are sold refrigerated. Thanks for bringing up the important issue of what we feed wildlife for our own interests isn't necessarily what they need. ♥️

Aw, a Marten video yes! They are everywhere here in the Balkans and I love them. One used to live in my attic in my old house and we would hear it walk around up there at night. When I stay up late at night in the summer i spot them occasionally and love watching them look for food and climb places. You can spot them during the day as well sometimes. They are very agile and cute animals I love them. Hope to see more videos on them.

Look at the pine marten’s shiny, sparkling fur in the night videos! Then a tad past 4:00 it appears to have sparkly fur in the day. Is that because it’s the same marten or do they all sparkle? Wish I could cuddle up with Little Sparkles. Can’t help anthropomorphizing when watching many of the Robert E Fuller videos. It adds to the wonderful feel of observing living creatures in their natural habitats. Thank you. 🦫
