Karl Malden said that the hardest acting challenge of his career was to give this speech, knowing he was going to get hit in the head with a beer can, but acting like he didn't know it was coming.
Fabulous performance. Thanks for the info. KZfaq won't let me 👍 on this video for some reason.

They cut the scene about 15 seconds too short. The scene of Karl Malden rising out of the hold on the hoist with Kayo Dugan's body is one of the great moments in a great film. Visual representation of the Christian doctrine of the Resurrection.

In. 1955 I was born into a Brooklyn Catholic family…a year after this film was made…9 years after my father helped win a world war against racist fascism and a month before the Birmingham bus boycott. This is a bracing reminder of the values my parents stood for.

Great scene, great film. What they don’t tell you is that in the alternative ending, the Lord God Almighty finally arrives in the form of capitalists with container shipping and the whole operation moves to New Jersey, longshoremen make 200k and IKEA opens a store for “new” Brooklynites in Red Hook. This piece of coastline is still one of the best deep water ports in the country but unfortunately you can’t get anywhere from there without somehow getting through the city first.
