Palmer was a machine. Not the greatest shot-maker ever, but incredibly fit, competitive, and an amazing retriever.

Yep Palmer was Tenacious like Peter nicol who albeit was a bit sharper with the racquet but Palmer would just play it out.

I was there, great final. The replay didn't show the points but there were a couple of occasions right at the death when maybe James could have taken a little more risk with his shots and won the match, as I think he admitted afterwards. That's what Palmer did, said he looked up and saw John White in the stand and did what he would have done. But one of them: it really could have gone either way.

Young compared to his current age, but not incredibly young in terms of squash: 24, almost 25. Diego Elias is only 23 now.

Bfff, you can see how much the squash has evolved, lots of their shots seems so imprecised compared to nowadays
@hamaja18
@hamaja18 4 жыл бұрын
You are wrong. Their shots are perfect. Even Willstrop is one of the best players in the World today. And a young Palmer can beat any egiptian of today.
@mwong987
@mwong987 4 жыл бұрын
The camera is actually placed further back than the typical recording. The effect is a longer telephoto lens that compresses the court and makes it seem shorter, the shots slower. So that optical effect might explain why their shots seem imprecise.

@@hamaja18 Nonsense. The older players are dreadful compared to the current egyptians. Im english and Im so glad squash has moved on. Nicol and Willstop are inaccurate and totally defensive compared to Ramy and El Shorbagy. The commentators of a few years ago are dreadful too. Im no fan of "colonnial voice" Joey Barrington but hes so much better than these dreadful commentators.

@@willbarnett I don't agree, sorry. Your comment is nonsense. Palmer and Willstrop have beaten the egyptians before. Why?, because they can.

LOL - at 6:11 can you play the ball with your hand. I've played fives with a glove so why not.

The win by Palmer was a sham. Palmer was awarded a let after hitting a shot directly down the middle just a few points before the incredibly fortunate frame winner won the final point. Willstrop should have won this match if not for the ref blowing it.

100%. One of the worst and most egregious calls in squash history that cost Willstrop the British Open. They should have shown it in this video. When I think of referee mistakes, this one always comes to mind and its been 12 years. Willstrop probably still rues it to this day. I consider him the true winner of the 2008 British Open.

No. I watched the match carefully next to John Massarella, one of the 2 additional additional refs - who I tried to intimidate in Willstrop's favour with a couple of dirty looks to no effect. Palmer was certainly lucky with that mishit to win, but it wasn't a squash match that I came away from thinking that either Palmer had cheated/bullied his way to victory in or that poor reffing had decided. I'd seen both, that wasn't one of them.

Some of the no-lets against Palmer here were very harsh too. I doubt a match of this quality came down to any one point!

@@sampryke2296 Thanks for saying that. When people say a call "cost" a player a match it's almost always a gross over- simplification. You are in a far better position (having been there) than keyboard jockeys are to say whether the final outcome was fair.
