My Dad and I always watched boxing together, ever since I was a kid. We got UFC 1, and we were sitting there eating subs, and when this fight started and the big guy got kicked in the face, we both looked at each other with wide-eyed shock. Like "we're not in Kansas anymore." It was a great show.

All praise to that ref. Everyone was against him in stopping that fight, including his employers, the crowd and the fighters, but he did so because it was clearly the right thing to do.
@charliericker274
@charliericker274 Ай бұрын
The ref didn't stop the fight. He paused it in the middle of the action. If had actually stopped the fight I would be fine, but he didn't. He paused the action, giving the sumo a chance to recover. Then the doctor stopped the fight. In hindsight, it looks like the ref was right because the fight was stopped eventually without restarting the action. But there is a reason Gerard was confused when the ref put a TIME OUT sign up. Time out means that you are going to time back in at some point, and the time out occurred right when Gerard was about to win the fight.

"those rules" this kind of fight was never "normal". But only because of the weight class interaction. And the heavier weight class lost. @@Eusantdac I used to think that. Rewatched them recently with an old friend & it really wasn't better imo. Times might have been & had some better characters but not the fights. Hair pulling. Low blows (sometimes over and over and over and over in the same fight lol). People dropping out & having someone fresh come fight them for the title. & It started to change at a point where sumo, boxer, kickboxer v doesn't matter - whoever is better at Brazilian judo wins 99% of the time. I'm glad we had it, and it was fun as hell getting new tapes. Friend had a brother who trained with a semi pro in the area at the time & they'd get all kinds of stuff. Dude fought the chief Andre (think that was his name) Roberts of all people lol. Didn't win but didn't do bad either. Unlocked memory. Did the same with rewatching pride. THAT had better fights & stands the test of time I think.

After seeing Ken Shamrocks interview when he talks about this fight he's correct/ THIS FIGHT NEEDS TO BE IN THE UFC FIGHT WING HOF. But when this fight happened, which was the 1st fight, and dude was kicked in the face and his tooth went flying every fighter back stage was like "This Sh*T is real".

That first bare knuckle punch after the kick was actually really brutal and kinda hit me different from any other mma fight I've seen. It's amazing how with even a thin glove the blows glance and slide through, but you could see his fist just stop and all the energy dump into the guys skull. At that point it was very over, but you can see how in a real fight he would have eaten many more with the back of his head down on the ground. Even a few more hits like that could be fatal.

If Teila Tuli looks familiar, it's because he is an actor on the show, Hawaii Five-0. He now uses the name Taylor Wily. He has definitely put on some serious weight since his UFC days. I imagine this fight incentivized him to seek a career in hollywood, where he wouldn't have to be kicked in the face. Kudos to Mr. Tuli on his successful career transition.
