Welcome to Workbench Wednesday at Thunder Mesa Studio! This week I'm talking about my collection of On18 locomotives - how they were made, what they were built from, and where the bits and pieces came from to build these unique and funky pieces of motive power.
Thanks for watching!

Looking back, I now realize that No 5, the H. D. Ryman actually runs on a Kato 11-106 mechanism, not a 105 as stated in this video. The two units are extremely similar in size and function. Thanks to Jim Manly for catching the error.

Fantastic stuff Dave! That little On18 forney bash is so cute it should be classified as a weapon... you'll give folks a heart attack if you aren't careful! Not sure if you've done much in the way of re-motoring locomotives, but there happens to be a convenient re-motoring kit for the old Minitrix 0-6-0 chassis that you've got under those Railway Recollections Porters. It's made by a really great business called Tramfabriek, based out of the UK. I've bought a couple before and the coreless motor really makes a world of difference. Just a thought! Can't wait to see more... keep up the great work!

Nice little locomotives. I also have this infamous MiniTrix from my HOn30 days. I saw on Twitter several Japanese artisans making some 3D printed On18 loco, the compressed air loco from Toma Model Works is tempting (but not in stock 😞).

The 4 wheel Kato drive would work for an electric “ mine motor”, either off a trolly wire or a battery unit. Here’s a crazy thought, an On18 articulated steam loco. Great Video and thanks again for sharing your creations and creative “mind with us.

Fascinating Dave, the way gauges can be tweaked and reapplied elsewhere. The locos look superb, your new one based on the Forney looks amazing, look forward to seeing it run when finished. Al Judy builds some astounding looking locos, I can see why you were inspired by him. All the best, keep well. Brian @The Angels

I think the A in Kato is pronounced as an Ah so the name should be pronounced kahtoh. I found your video very informative; I myself have been dreaming building TT / TTn42 layout so I would love to see a tutorial on how you assembly your 0n18 locomotives.

If you're wondering on the pronunciation of Kato, see Japanese, when written in Romanji(english letters), is pronounced the same way as a lot of Latin and European languages. A is "aw" like in "All", E is just "eh," think "complex," I is the long "ee," as in Mitsubishi or Nissan, O is just "oh," Ohio, and U is pronounced as You. Again, a lot of European languages are like this. So from this, Kato is pronounced as "Kaw-Tow." Hope this was helpful!

In many parts of Japan, the U is not actually pronounced, but "swallowed" That's how the Matsuda family name became Mazda Sukoshi is pronounce skoshi - Americans sometimes corrupt that to skosh, or skootch. Lots of other examples

My smallest is 8" radius. I haven't really experimented, but I imagine the 2 axle units might be able to go down to a 4" radius or smaller.

0n18 track is "N" scale track?
@ThunderMesaStudio

No. It's the same gauge. The ties in N scale track are way too small. I use Peco HOn30 track - also 9mm gauge.
