WARNING EPIC GUITAR TONE ALERT!
The #EddieVanHalen guitar tone on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is probably my favourite guitar tone of all time! I've tried to achieve it for years AND FINALLY, I've got it down pat using a #BOSSPS6 and a #PalmerSpeakerSimulator. I have three EVH 5150 III cabinets but unfortunately don't have a power amp to run them properly to get that Wet Dry Wet sound so I mimicked the tone inside ProTools. Rig rundown is simple!
Donate to the channel to help create new content! www.paypal.me/...
DRY GUITAR TONE
#EVH Wolfgang USA, EVH 5150 III to a Palmer PDI-03, XLR out into a Universal Audio Apollo 8 mic preamp.
WET GUITAR TONE
1/4" out of PDI-03 into a BOSS PS6 on DETUNE mode, set at 1 O'clock. Stereo out into two inputs on Universal Audio Apollo 8.
ProTools
Dry panned centre, BOSS PS6 signal panned stereo L/R. Sending to aux track with 2 separate H-Delay's. 398 and 798 MS!
DRUMS
DW Collector Series, Ludwig LM402 Snare with AVH Mods, Paiste 2002 cymbals. Recorded with 4 mics, Beta52 on Kick, SM57 on snare and AKG C414 stereo overheads. Mixed in ProTools.
BASS
Epiphone Thunderbird into Green Channel on 5150 III, that's it.

Just watching this makes one realise there was incredible depth to Eddie van halen as a musician . The strive for perfection in his tone was as equally impressive as the playing itself . Many players can play impressive but nobody has ever made tone such a science as van halen .

EVH ran one main head. from the Send of the amp a mono signal went to the rack. The micro pitch from the Eventide through the rest of the effects went to a H&H Poweramp and then to the wet cabinets. The head went to the dry cab directly. Hence W/D/W.

This tone is so under appreciated sometimes, of course I love Eddie’s early Plexi/echoplex tone more, but, this is still a fun tone to play with, specially in wet/dry/wet. Good job, sounds more to me like the balance era, cus in that balance tour he really saturated the Eventide tone, which no doubt made it sound wider. Good job

Well done - Eddie's WDW is basically a live version of an aux send. Sound Toys MicroShift can do this in Pro Tools/Logic as an aux send to get the same effect, and then add delay to the same aux send - or a different one to blend as you go. Or you can get one of the radial boxes/500 series that lets you interface pedals into low-Z.

If you do not have a daw or pro tools etc and doing live you can use it as a line out box. Speaker in and through to center cab, then use one of the 4 line outs to start your wet chain. The thru turns off the load box function and your center cab take the load.

I'm not a guitar player, but having watched this video, I'm almost convinced Eddies engineer, or "a engineer" may have been responsible for his tone. This sort of parallel signal flow I don't think is something a guitar player would think of (at least not in the 80s or 90s). I imagine guitar players understand basic signal flow, as far as what types of effects/modulation should in/out before or after the amp etc. But this sort of mixing wet and dry signal thing screams engineer to me. I wonder if his sound didn't evolve as well over the years, and an engineer just helped him refine it. I don't know that much about Eddie Van Halen. I was actually looking for a recording of somebody playing van halen dry, so I could mess around with some of the new effects plugin's I bought. Cool video though.

Well done with nailing his Sammy tone. That Pedal Show do a good job explaining wet dry wet if ppl are confuzzeled about it. Glad u hit upon that it's cool how our ears can trick us, like a trompe d'oreil, into hearing effects that...arent there. Imo Wet dry wet works best with time based and or stereo effects. You can experiment with order and putting effects (even boosters and dirt boxes) into the effects loop too. I'm currently using an Orange Dark terror (dirt sound dry) into a 4x12 with Celestions with a Roland JC120 (wet and clean of dirt) and it covers bases beyond my meager talents lol. You can use an A/B or A/B/Y spitter anywhere in your pedalboard or chain and mix what goes where. I love the DIY happy accidents I find. It's loud with six speakers but that's what attenuation is for. I got used to hearing things through computer monitors only for hours on end and the difference with wet dry or wet dry wet stereo is huge. ...Literally and figuratively. Cheers, Brian from Detroit.

Sounds great. It's probably my favorite guitar tone. Those albums came out just as I was getting into guitar and I'm still trying to achieve that sound. I probably do need some sort of wet dry wet to really nail it. On a side note, the 1st time I saw Van Halen live was on their "Right Here, Right Now" tour, and Vince Neil opened with Steve Steven's as his guitar player. Good times.
@Patrick-857
@Patrick-857 3 жыл бұрын
I say do something similar to what this guy is doing, so you don't need three amps. Either an amp into a load box with speaker simulation, and put the Harmoniser stereo outs into two delays or a stereo delay, plus the dry signal into your interface, or if you're jamming maybe three full range powered speakers. Alternatively there's preamp pedals, feed one into a impulse response pedal, and then split into wet dry wet. Lots of 80s session players abandoned amps altogether and use rack gear to get a mono tone with preamp and speaker simulator, and then split out into wet dry wet, and fed three signals straight to the desk, so they could walk into the studio, plug in and immediately lay down the perfect tracks every time. I'm somewhat frustrated that we don't have a single pedal option that does great preamp, power amp and cabinet simulation all in one, we seem to need multiple pedals to get close and the tone isnt as good is the primitive gear in the 80s.

Sounds spot on great job ... I was watching a show where Steve Vai was showing how he puts his sound together from the pedals he uses and how they are wired and also was explaining his version of how he sets up his amps and he also has his version of a wet / dry / wet set up and how he uses the stereo outputs on 2 Boss digital delays and he too has the time duration settings on the delays at different speeds , I was blown away at the fact that he achieves his sound with actually very limited equipment actually using the old standard Boss pedals that anyone has ... Mind you I can bet his have been hot rodded out a little with out giving away his full secret LoL But I would have thought piles of rack stacks etc and not some old school Boss pedals .... actually caught that video here too on youtube .... wish all this info was out there or even the internet when I was 16 learning my guitar Again great job thanks for the info Cheers from Canada, Ontario

Try using a pair of boss katanas paired with the “stereo expand” facility and the detune effect. It is pretty close to what you have there…. I’m ising it for Def Lepard’s “Animal”…. Tip: you only need one Katana mark II, for the slave you can use a katana mark I…. Hold down the cgannel 3&4 buttons as you power on and run a cable from the send of the ktIi to the effects return of the kti.

He actually did use a lexicon pcm 70? For some short reverb? Dual Boss sde 3000 for the delay. I love the tone u got in this video though… and the Palmer was actually in Eds balance tpur rig. His 5150 dry line out went to the palmer ( kinda for an early IR?) because the Peavey 5150 straight line out is just the preamp tone so …. Ahhh shit im tired mate. Im going to sleep lol. Beautiful wolves btw.
