Great video! I took off the solenoid, disassembled it and ran the brass nozzle and bowl thru an ultrasonic cleaner. Sprayed out the inside of solenoid with carb cleaner. Removed the altitude adjustment needle and put it in the sonic cleaner too. ( count the number of turns and note orientation of that plastic stop for reassembly). Connected the solenoid up to a battery to insure it worked. It did. Put all back together. It started and ran great. Mine was flooding out and leaking gas out of air cleaner housing too. Gave the “36” code also. Thanks for the help!

I used your method yesterday since I was promised a mechanic, but he never showed after 2 weeks. I reviewed your method after I purchased my new carburetor from Amazon, cheap. I looked at your video a few times and then just went out and done it. My generator works fine now Thanks!

Used the sea foam really to no avail, it did work a little but still had the surging. Try this! unscrew the drain plug (screw with a spring) get a can of carburetor cleaner with a spray nozzle and work the spray nozzle in as far as you can. If you jimmy the red spray nozzle while your pushing it into the drain plug hole it will slide into the bowl just enough to when you spray, 90% of the pressurized spray will go into the bowl. spray for like 15 to 20 seconds. Have the screw in ready position so that when you pull out the spray nozzle put the screw in as fast as you can so you don't lose a whole lot of carburetor cleaner. If you get enough to stay in the bowl, let it set in their for about 30 minutes then start the generator. I did this while still hooked up to a gas can with sea foam. Worked for me!

THIS IS HOW I FIXED MINE, IN THE CASE OF.... "I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR" It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen dipstick (it won't start if low oil because of sensors) then I checked gasoline more than 1\4 tank in the RV (also safety sensors), sparkplug checked for good spark, also checked the manual reset circuit braker ( to be ON) at front motorhome engine compartment for 12v current to the generator to be able to start it, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed like gum by rats at the back of starting switch generator panel so I replaced them, at this time the generator started but stay running only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so then finally I knew it was internal electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, (I did this by myself with some tools and old Mayan tricks ) lol, it's really heavy for one person. I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats, and of course I got rid off the stinky nest, lol!!! Then I assembled everything back together and... bingo it's runing like a champion!!! For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel). Just picture this: (Any gasoline engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed. Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover because you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding, lol!!! After testing the gen then I did put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover, now it's ready to be installed at my RV. Once the gen was installed back at my motorhome I started it to be tested for electric power but not before flipping the electric switch (on) at the gen starting control panel (sometimes hiding under or around the panel) to transfer power to my RV GFCI main outlet and electric panel as well, my motorhome it's equipped with GFCI so I reset it and tested for green led light indicating power is ready at my main breakers panel, so I turned my main breaker (on) along the others ones but no power was present at my breaker main switch (faulty main braker) so I flipped it many times, sometimes you can make it work again, mine did work, lol!!! I'm happy because everything works now including the ref for cold drinks and AC for this crazy summer, lol! Later I'll buy me a new main braker, for now this is a resurrected generator story that needed to be sheared. If this can help eaven one person to save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!

I just fixed my generator today using this technique! I bought a $42 carb off Amazon and swapped the bowl and the Brass Jet assembly. Mine looked the same as the original too. Thank you for this guidance! Awesome! I got the carb delivered from Amazon in one day. Swapped it today and it runs awesome. Saved me a tom of money and time!!!!!

It's a miracle! After many days/hours of messing with this carb issue, it is fixed and runs like new. Basically followed your instructions by substituting the new carb bowl from a new $25 carb off amazon but reused my original metering jet with attached solenoid. I also followed Jason Klein's recommendation and removed the two bolts in the air box which allowed the carb to be rotated in place (linkage attached), giving easy access to the bowl. Fired up immediately after priming. Had previously used the SeaFoam method twice, but it took a good dozen tries to get it started and it ran very poorly (surging) and would not start again after a few days. This was a simple and inexpensive solution for gummed up carbs. From now on, I am draining the bowl after use (using the screw just below the metering jet). PS my generator is the RV QG 4000.

This method works and saved me a ton of time! Here was my slight modification in the process: I removed the fuel lines and 2 bolts holding the carb in place, then I rotated the carb to make the float bowl and wires easier to access (all linkages still connected), then swapped out the original float bowl and plunger with one from a carb I bought for $50 on Amazon. Total process took about 30 mins and the generator fire right back up without any hiccups. I cannot thank you enough for this trick!!

I wonder if simply removing the restriction of the plastic "knob" from the altitude adjustment screw and setting it to what would be a negative altitude would work without doing anything else. The zero altitude setting lets more fuel flow than the higher altitude settings. When varnish forms in there it restricts the flow so zero altitude setting works more like the 5000 ft setting. It would seem just opening the jet a bit more would let enough fuel to flow that the thing would run. To avoid the problem, put an inline fuel valve a few inches from the carb. Stop the generator by shutting off the new valve so it runs dry. No fuel in the bowl to turn to muck. No oxygen gets past the valve to form varnish. Of course running the generator for an hour every month at half load as called out in the manual actually works perfectly.

You are absolutely correct,My Onan 4000 is 4 yrs old and started to surge,I noticed if I turned the Altitude adjustment counter clockwise to zero it would smooth out,so I removed the Altitude adjustment and cleaned the needle and orifice, reinstalled it and set it back to the factory setting fixed the surging problem,👍.Also the screw just below the Altitude Adjuster is for draining the fuel out of the carb,I suggest if you are not going to use or run the Gen for some time open this screw and drain the fuel in the carb, this will prevent the fuel from evaporating in the carb and leaving the varnish that clogs the carb.

On the silver piece, did you use the new or old "rod" "Jet" or whatever that piece is that moves up and down. I currently have the new bowl how you suggested, bottom silver piece is new, I put the old "rod" or "Jet" in and then put the old brass piece on top. I noticed the new "rod" or "Jet" was longer than the original. The old "rod" or "jet" moves up and down freely in the new silver piece. I also cleaned the old rod with Seafoam. Recap- Silver piece new, rod inside new, bench tested and it moves freely. Bowl is new, Float is old, Upper carb is old. I am firing it up tomorrow and see how it goes. I removed the carb and did the work on a bench inside because of the weather. Also, how do the top pieces fit for the throttle?I want to make sure I have these hooked in right. I took pictures, but I just want to make sure it matches and moves correct. When I tried the Amazon new carb on its own...it flooded....made my Onan 4000 have white smoke, and I think dumped fuel into the oil. I am going to drain the oil, change the plug, and fire it up. I will update here how it works. I hope your video is my answer.

Hey Ren, I don’t have a wire number, I think it might be a 14ga wire. What I did was just cut the solenoid wire from the motorhome (leave an inch from the connector to splice new wire in), and connector the new wire (with crimp connectors) to the old wire & the old connector. Thanks.

Hi, if you order a carb off of Amazon….I would only use the Carb for Parts for your Original Carb. The carb I bought off of Amazon flooded out and wouldn’t run after 30 seconds. That’s when I took a long look at the Float Bowl Cover and noticed the small hole in the bottom of it where the solenoid screws into it. I replaced the old float bowl cover with the new one and Presto…it worked.

Sorry to say, this didn't work for me. Left my generator un-run for 6 months. Seems it got clogged up. Tried the Seafoam and gas can with Seafoam and gas. Would start when primed with Seafoam but would not stay running without spraying in the seafoam thru air intake. Got the cheap Amazon carb and swapped out the bowl and solenoid and brass jets as they looked identical to Onan jets. Started up when primed with seafoam again just like before. Same results. Runs when spraying in the seafoam but dies after no more spraying. Will not run. I had replaced the fuel filter earlier with Onan filter and unhooked fuel line at carb and turned over and fuel was spraying out so it's getting the fuel to the carb, just not staying running. Wondering if I should just replace the complete Onan carb with the cheap Amazon one, but have read so many horror stories about gas spraying out and problems with the amazon carb. Any suggestions are appreciated.
