I like the air cooled backup generator sets. Back in the day we worked on some Deutz powered units and they were very simple, rugged and reliable. I have seen a large supermarket with a water cooled unit as a standby, which is hardly used.

Nice and clean on the inside, should be a good engine. Onan's are the best. At 15,000 watt with a 4 cylinder engine, I would be willing to bet it runs at 1800 rpm, and will be easy on fuel and quite... as most Onan's are. The generator at my dad's house has a big old Wisconsin heavy duty air cooled cast iron engine that runs at 1800 rpm. It's super quite, and runs about five hours per gallon of gas.

@campermike88797 жыл бұрын
Depends on the year and what plug they took. Yes the ones that took the normal looking plug they were known to spit them out at ya. Then they went to some odd looking plug that would carbon up and the plug would break on the way out. Napa couldn't keep the spark pug extractor tool in stock. I didn't want to mess with Ford because of all the problems with the 5.4L. Got me a GMC then found out how common the AFM lifter failure and oil burning problems are with their 5.3L

so just out of curiosity roadking ,, this is an onan genset i can tell just by the color ,but what model is this ,, i have never seen an onan genset with a 4 cylinder engine like this one ,,if i didn't know better i'd almost say that looked just like a Lister engine that's a neat old generator set I've got several old onan units ,, even a 2 cylinder diesel Onan from the early 50s ,,and a 75KW onan genset with a ford 300-6 engine, just a week ago i came across a rather new Onan/Cummins generator set , I gave the guy $250 for it complete was told it wouldn't run cause the engine was junk,wouldn't crank ,, ,,turns out after some checking and a quick inspection the reason it was removed from service and replaced is it has a stuck fuel injector ,leaked a cylinder full of fuel causing a ( Hydro Lock) ,,someone spent $20,000 to replace this generator which has 600 hours on the meter ,and all that's wrong is a $99 fuel injector ,,it's a 125KW standby diesel genset ,,it's currently mounted on a utility trailer with a 100 gallon fuel tank ,,made in 1998 it's powered by a 5.9 liter cummins turbo diesel ,, the exact same cummins used in dodge trucks ,, I've seen these used as irrigation power units for center pivot irrigation systems and have 10,000 hours on them still in service,,no clue what caused an injector to fail with so few hours ,, but most likely caused by crappy contaminated fuel

put a turbo on it did he say carburator ? so it's older than injectors
@Phantomthecat7 жыл бұрын
Humboldt,JohnDoe Fourtwenty it's an old natural gas powered unit - common in areas with town gas connected. You can see the regulator and solenoid on the front RHS of the machine. A lot of these are converted Diesel engines with spark plugs instead of injectors, a carby on the inlet and a dizzy grafted onto the camshaft.
@scdevon7 жыл бұрын
Gasoline fuel injection goes back to the 1950s. Diesel fuel injection goes back to the late 1800s. Even in 2017, carburetors are still standard equipment on small gasoline / propane / non-Diesel engines. Electronic fuel injection is WAY too expensive for small stationary engines. (This engine is small by stationary engine standards).
@humboldtjohndoefourtwenty61877 жыл бұрын
scdevon yeah it's no caterpillar genset
@chaytonruijsenaars39717 жыл бұрын
if i remember correctly i read somewhere that the first ever prototype running direct injection gas engines were made in like the 1900s as well as things like OHC were being tested, tecnology was probably advanced further than it was widely used
@scdevon7 жыл бұрын
The technology exists long before it's marketed to the masses due to cost of production and reliability bugs that need to get worked out. Bringing production costs down so that it can be mass produced reliably is usually the biggest hurtle. GM had SRS Airbags in 1973. Mercedes Benz was testing SRS airbag prototypes long before that.

@805ROADKING7 жыл бұрын
No not yet!! We have just been accumulating parts, some are a little difficult to get like the Distributor!!☺
@wolvenar7 жыл бұрын
That distributer might wind up to be easier to just build a new lower part of the distributer, matched to a newer system you can readily get. I have had to do several of them over the years. Most I built to use chevy HEI parts for simplicity. Now these days many of those conversions you can get premade off ebay. If you cant, but know somone handy with a lathe and milling machine, it is relatively easy just time consuming. Just keep and reuse the gear, maybe part of the shaft as well if that is tough to match.. If you can find premade conversions, be sure to grab a couple spring kits as well to be able to tweak the advance. Though on second thought, maybe that is not as critical in a generator since they normally do not vary rpm as much?

I think we can use a distributor of a Jeep CJ3A and just shorten the shaft and put a gear on it!! And they are easy to get with points or electronic ignition!!☺
