TRIP REPORT | An Engine Failure and a Broken Trip | NewYork to London | NORSE Boeing 787 Premium Eco

This should have been an amazing American Airlines Trip Report flying from New York to Curaçao (via Miami). Instead, the right engine of my first American Airlines flight didn't want to work (twice), creating a delay that made me lose my connecting flight and my onward flight from Curaçao (TUI to London).
Instead, this is a Norse Trip Report, flying from New York to London in Premium Economy, on a desperate way to get to my destination on time to not lose even more flights. The plane used was the only that operates Norse Atlantic Airways: a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
As I got out of the American Airlines plane I started looking for the cheapest way possible to get from New York to London on the same day. I know, it sounds impossible but I finally found the perfect deal: fly the long-haul low-cost Norse Atlantic Airways. The economy ticket was 329$ in economy and 649$ in premium economy. As there were no window sets available in economy class, I decided to go for the Norse highest class.
The seat on Norse Premium Economy is more comfortable than the one in any other European Airline. Period. With a huge recline and a huge footrest, this seat is perfect for a flight across the Atlantic. I calculate that it reclines to a total of 120° or more. I managed to sleep all the way until my alarm woke me up for the sunrise just before landing in London-Gatwick.
About the onboard service in Norse, in Premium Economy are included 2 meals. The first one was a full meal, chicken or beef; the second one is a small warm breakfast. Drinks are included on both and there is also a drinks service before serving the food.

"Budget" airline or not, that absolutely looked like an enjoyable flight. I could easily do 6 hours in that seat. I commend you on both your preparedness to handle an unforeseen contingency and on your positive attitude about air travel. Airplanes are enormously complicated machines that need a lot of maintenance. Issues are going to happen and the way you were prepared and handled it was exemplary. The takeaways from this video are to have a plan B and to be flexible enough in your plans to be able to roll with any delays.

5 STAR TREATMENT ON NORSE ATLANTIC😊 Loved the beautiful light show at the end! So unique😮 Great seats & food included. Sorry about the AA flight which would have led to a TUI flight ✈️ but better to have problems on the ground not in the air! Fly Norse again sometime, Lucas & of course another TUI trip report 👍🏻🙋🏼‍♀️🇺🇸

I agree! I was really impressed with Norse on the Premium Economy. The only bad thing is, as I've said on the video, a moving map. Come on! It's the most cheap thing to add once you have all the seats fited with screens!! Glad that you've enjoeyd the video :))

Enjoyable flight review, thanks. What a shame your plans had to be changed, but Norse PE looks good. To be honest, I’m not keen on the business class ‘pods’, especially of travelling with a loved one (as I mostly do). I want to be sat next to them, not 1 to 2 metres away.

When flying back to SAT from MMMX, our plane stopped for around 20 minutes on the taxiway and then the pilot reported an instrument failure. We then to a remote stand parked there, took a bus, waited for 1 hour for our other plane that looked 40 years old. Super dirty. But at least we didn’t takeoff with the failure.

Thanks Lucas, if you really need to travel and you're on budget Norse is a good option. The kind of window of the 787 is good but bad for others side because in some cases the crew block them.If you're flying Aeromexico from gru to mex it's daytime flight and Mexican crew blocks the windows and you cannot see when they over fly the Amazon and that would bring greats views of the jungle and curving rivers

Wow, I really want to fly Norse now: those amazing cabin lights! I think American did you a favour there 😊 Happened to us last year, not engine problems but BA cancelled our flight. Had to fly with American via DFW but missed connecting flight due to a thunderstorm. Got home eventually and we were impressed with American.

If you would go on the AA you'd probably get the Biscoff cookies, one of my favorite cookies. Great shot of the retracting jet bridge. I really like the look of the Premium Economy cabin layout. Most normal airlines First and Business class layouts screams economic inequality to me. Again great mathematics to set the alarm for sunrise during a flight. And bonus points for showing the going up after coming out of the jet bridge and than all the way down to the arrivals area. I think most large airports find this the best layout to handle passenger traffic.

Excelente el servicio de Norse, hace 10 dias estuve en la terminal 7 del JFK y es realmente pequeña solo hay dos lounges Alaska y no recuerdo el otro , vole en Aerolineas Argentinas que opera en ese terminal. Las cosas a veces no se dan como uno las planifica pero por suerte todo salio bien , Excelente el video como siempre , saludos

Wow!! What a trip! While I'm sure it wasn't the most fun travel day for you, these kinds of days are always really interesting to watch and make for a great story to tell. Speaking of which, it's really interesting how you found Norse, of all airlines, to have the best Premium Economy in Europe. Oh, and just curious, do you know whether the AA 737 MAX ended up making to Miami? If so, how late was it in the end?

Yeah, others told me the Neos B787 Premium Economy is really good as well... I'll try to fly with them when possible. The plane flew without further issue around 3h after I disembarked.

Every summer I try to upload one Trip Report with Jet2, as I know hundreds of UK viewers want that type of content, so this year we'll have it again. I cant wait ur videos sunday by sunday. This one was an unusual because of the failure.. but well it can happens as we saw. Unf. I have never fly on PE, I can not afford it. But I would like one day of course! In addition, how much was the difference between this E and PE? Anyway, great as always!

Why I never take American. They have the worst problems when it comes to mechanical issues. I take Delta in the USA, and outside the USA take Delta or Norse. They both work really well. Lufthansa is not bad to Germany, and Singapore is relatively reliable despite their small presence at JFK. Note: By 2030 Terminal 7 will be no more. They will be merging it with Terminal 8 and renovating it, calling it Terminal 8 in the future plans. There will only be four terminals when the renovation is complete. Terminal 1, 4, 5/6 (5), and 7/8 (8). Funny: Got an American Airlines commercial during this review - appreciate your review!

Well, in that case the pilots would have performed a drift-down procedure, assses the situation and land the nearest suitable airport with one engine inoperative. There are procedures for everything. And for sure the video would have been more interesting :))

Well, that’s really unfortunate, but things like those happen. I wonder if it was some sort of maintenance issue or a defective engine itself. Anyways, great trip report! The seats on Norse don’t look all that bad actually, they seem similar to mainline carriers.

A plane doesn't fly for almost 6 years with a defective engine. Things like this can happen any day, that's why maintenante services are there. The plane took off almost 3 hours later without any further issue. But for me it was too late.

Thanks for a nice trip report. I have two questions. What happened with your initial ticket. Was it refunded, any compensation? The second question is related to your statement that the Norse PE is the best in Europe. What makes you think it is? With what airlines are you comparing it? The CFM engines on the neos are LEAP 1A. The engines on all MAX aircraft are LEAP 1B. Not sure if there’s any difference.

They are exactly the same with minimum modifications to addapt to the lower height of the Boeing.

So in that instance does AA transfer you checked luggage to the new airline or do you have to go pick up your luggage and take it to the new airline? Nice to find an engine problem while on the ground.

Of course not. You are on your own if you decide to leave the plane. I didn't have any checked luggage.

Did you take travel insurance for the cancellation. I have had more domestic flight cancellations in the USA than Europe. Norde seems to be a good product.

No, I usually dont book any insurance. With the ammount of flights I take is not worth for me. In around 1000 flights it happened 1 or 2 times that an insurance would have save me money. For people travelling for holidays 1 or 2 times per year, yeah. 👌

Thank you for sharing your experience. I feel deceived with the PE offer of Norge. For better understanding, I would like you to show the Economy offer, either in seat or food. I have increasingly the idea that PE is just to get some additional money for the original Economy trip. Here, many differences could be found, company by company. Travelling in a Jumbo in the 70s provided much more and better. At least with TAP. One of these days, airways start demanding a fee for the air.

Very interesting video. Of course, many of the comments are laughable. American Airlines has a problem with a French-American engine, and everyone “leaps” to say Boeing is falling apart! Nevermind that the 787 portion of your trip is flawless. I assume many of these fanboys don’t fly often - there are countless daily issues on all aircraft. And yes, I just traveled on my 368th flight a few weeks ago (Play A-320n).

Exactly... that's why I said it twice on the video: these are the same engines (with little modifications for the lower plane height) as those on the A320Neo... but for many will be just another Boeing fault.

I didnt have any checked baggage. That was good for the ground staff that didnt have to look for it. Otherwise I would have to gp an pick it at the belt ot whereever they would tell me to collect it.

Everyone says that the 737 series, especially the MAX is unsafe. Just look at Ryanair then and their safety record, think you’ll find majority routes use a MAX most of the time
