When I first watched this movie, I remember this scene got me to actually pay attention. We were in class and I really just wanted to sleep so I was resting my head and then this scene came on and I looked up and just felt all the emotions one could possibly feel. I watched the rest of the movie in awe, but this particular scene just blew me away. I wish there could be more artists in the world that could produce an ounce of this guys emotions on their songs. The shot composition for this scene is just such beautiful imagery. The camera starts far back, fading in from black on just another street performer nestled between two mid-scale clothing shops and playing literally next to two dumpsters, backlit by a dingy alleyway. We start pulled back from the performance, but just as the music begins to swell, it slowly draws us in. Then we begin to see the true nature of the performer, the man. His guitar, worn clear thru on the body from the harshness of his strumming, his clothes, humble and practical, his breath steaming from the cold and the ferocity of the lyrics that escape him. As he plays, it feels like he could burst into tears at any moment, truly harnessing his pain for his art. And then the beautiful pull back at the end, showing us he has a single listener who pulls us and him back into reality. Phenomenal.

This takes me back to a very specific place in my life. Call it the "honeymoon phase" of heroin addiction. Where there was no pain. Only wave after wave of blissful euphoria. And in that one chord, you all know the one, I can for a split second, everything I felt. October 2013, after the sun went down over the colored leaves leaving the streets bleached with that golden light from the streetlights. A crisp breeze in through the cracked window bringing with it the scents of memories long passed. Sitting with my girlfriend on her bed watching this after we just used. The way she would just look at me was a high in and of itself. Both of us oblivious to the horror that was right around the corner waiting to drive us permanently apart.
