How do you create a compelling and entertaining character without the usual screenwriting tools? Everyones favourite foot guy Quentin Tarantino has figured it out.

Cliff Booth is an ideal, a hero in the most classical sense. He has all the reason to be bitter, resentful and anxious (career over, accused of murdering his wife, women in the industry hate him and prevents him from getting jobs, he is being canceled, and he is dirt poor), yet he is content and in harmony with himself and his world. Because he knows what is important. He is not only a character, he has character. And, he fits into the world dynamically, using love and kindness, violence and force, when needed, with appropriate amounts. This is wisdom. .

Cliff’s first AND last line in the movie is “I try”.
@pot7979
@pot7979 9 сағат бұрын
I really got the impression he doesn't. He doesn't try to be someone, to be a person, but he tries to have good traits by trying THEM, by doing them. He also tries without trying. Trying, doing good, putting in effort, comes without trying to him, but naturally to him. This is who he is, a person who puts in effort to do the right, and then the righter thing. He is a type of person who makes it look easy, but we must never say "trying comes without trying to him", as that makes us split into people who simply believe they simply cannot try, or put in effort, or attempt. Try to try. Work hard at being good, at being better, at any type of progress in life, and know that you can't immediately, because it takes years of trying to work hard until you start working hard, if you haven't for a long time, if you got used to an easier lifestyle. It takes years to accept a genuinely, simply "this is a harder life", especially if it wasn't thrown at you by circumstances so you have to adapt, but it's you making a voluntary, self-willed and non-obligatory change which you won't die without, unlike if it were harsher circumstances that do not allow you to return or you'll die, and literally 'burn the boats', your boats. It takes hard work to get to a point where you can work hard, and that's okay.

One thing I've always respected about Brad Pitt, is that he's had leading man looks and Charisma since the 90s, and even after he played the lead in a few films, he still did supporting roles, and completely buried himself in the character. Guy has depth and a surprising lack of ego, even when he's playing Brad Pitt, Action Star.

Tarantino did a great job creating the character of Cliff Booth. A man totally at ease with himself, his surroundings, and his situation. You don't see that in Hollywood movies today. As the credits rolled, I wanted to see more Cliff. The Rick Dalton character, on the other hand, is an overly self-conscious, alcoholic, neurotic mess. But Tarantino wisely gave Dalton the best and funniest lines - so that keeps him interesting, in a train-wreck sort of way. By the end, we know everything about Rick Dalton. But the Cliff story feels unfinished. I'd definitely watch a sequel that has Cliff Booth in it. I think there's another movie there - waiting for Tarantino to write it.

Currently reading Tarantino’s new novel, mostly because I want to see more of Cliffs story. It’s not what I expected so far, but I definitely want to make a video discussing it. And I absolutely agree, if Tarantino wants to even throw Cliff into his last film, that would make me a happy man indeed.

In real life a stunt man named Shorty Shea went to the ranch and was killed by the Manson cult. Knowing this made the scene more tense but more relieving as he drove away. In the same way it was relieving that Tate wasn't brutally murdered. This is a story in a story, an inclusio. To top it off in Cliffs flashback is another flashback, brilliant.

The criticism that, “Not much happens” is levied at several of Tarantino’s movies (the best ones, coincidentally enough!) “Once....” proves that if you’ve got interesting characters and engaging dialogue sprinkled with cool atmosphere, you don’t need much else! 🤷🏻‍♂️ It was a fantastic character study wrapped in a nostalgic walk down pop culture memory lane where everyone’s favorite two decades clashed in a passing of the baton that was at once heartfelt and raw. Truly a brilliant film. Can’t believe Quentin’s only going to make 2 more, that’s a shame.

For me, Rick Dalton is equally important since he is so opposite of Cliff. One character has a lot more going for him than he realizes including a decent chance of continuing a successful career, yet he's terrified that he's washed up and unpraiseworthy. The other character is truly washed up and has possibly even been crippled, yet carries himself like a prince.

Great job. Appreciate your insights. There’s some things you said that I will definitely remember and require unpacking. However, I’ve been a life-long bartender (well, 27 years, and I’m not dead yet) and I have to tell you that celery in a Bloody Mary is pretty common. Most old-school bartenders would say it’s “suppose”’to be in a Bloody Mary, the same way a lime is so steeped in the tradition of the cocktail as to be entirely necessary, i. e. a cherry in a Manhattan and a lime wedge with a margarita. On a less traditional/solely practical note: a quarter or a third of all people who drink bloody marys want it the spice to challenge them, to be so spicy as to overcome their ability to enjoy it. The overwhelming spice is the reason they enjoy it, like the way many, many gilmet lovers insist upon using Rose’s lime syrup, and the rest find Rose’s lime syrup disgusting. The only foodie example I can think of is canned, gelatinized cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving instead of dried cranberries stewed slowly with sugar and water. Or the way a kid prefers a McDonalds hamburger to fresh beef grilled with fresh bread, fresh tomato, fresh lettuce, fresh onions, and pickles. It happens all the time, but half of people don’t get it.

Appreciate the insights from a life-long bartender! My knowledge on most alcoholic drinks is limited (a pina colada is as far as I go with most cocktails) but I’d always thought of it as tomato juice and vodka, didn’t realise about the celery nor the spices until now. Much the same as not realising sweet French toast was a thing, as I’d always had it savoury. You do learn new things every day aha

I suppose if you make them out of a book that is what it is, but in any decent saloon it's vodka (a good pour), either tomato juice or V-8. Not shaken with ice, not ever - the shaking action dilutes the drink as the ice melts (unless you're a pussy) from the shaking action. A dash of celery salt, a dash of Worcestershire, dash of Tabasco. Ice in a bucket or tall glass, pour. Add a celery stalk for garnish. Drink!

This was a good critique, thanks. I really enjoyed Pitt in this film. Was never much of a fan (but for a few movies, 12 Monkeys, Fight Club, etc) but I think he aged well with his career. Yeah he aged really well ; )

I thought the hippies would kill them but the way Brad Pitt's Character and His dog took them it was a really great ending.

You not knowing what a Bloody Mary is distracts from your video essay. Are you an alien? That’s the real question you’ve raised.

The first time I watched this movie I projected too much of myself onto Cliff. I saw this friendship with Rick as resentful and many of the things that happen to him as tragic. But he acknowledges and accepts that he is where he is. He's just a bro to Rick and helps out people who are important to him. He's not a working stuntman because he made it really hard to hire him and he doesn't hold it against Rick. I thought the last night was sad that Rick was going onto better things while Cliff was going to the hospital, but it was just a night where they both knew they had to go separate ways and they had an exciting, cathartic night to end their friendship.

You are SPOT ON, in all points of this (except one should always drink one's Bloody Mary with a celery stalk and LOTS of spice, and it's "Spahn Ranch"}. The casting here is absolutely key, and Tarantino himself says that not only were these two guys his first choice to play these parts, but also if either one couldn't or wouldn't do it, he'd have to go with two different guys, because without one of them, the other one wouldn't have worked. So, if you love Leo's work in the movie (and I do), it's partly because Brad does HIS job so well.

Just watched this movie for the first time recently ... love it! Very addictive film, and one I know I'll be watching over and over for years to come. I'm from the UK and having never been to the USA, this film has given me the urge to vist the state of California; I'm so intrigued by Los Angeles and those Hollywood Hills houses. Would love to live there for a year or so. Pitt's character (Booth) is laid-back, carefree and likeable, with a little portion of creepy thrown in for good measure (though not too creepy to spoil the overall likeability of his character). Additionally, this film makes smoking look so appealing; I'm a non-smoker (tried it when younger a few times), but this film made smoking seem enjoyable, fun and cool.

Back in the day when drinking Caesars was new; it was not uncommon to see people drinking them like that with big pieces of celery and some people also enjoy hot sauce in it. Here in Canada, they sell the spicy Clamato juice.

The entire movie characters were a success. Loved Leonardo, and the dog. Be serious, all the characters and actors were excellent. But what about the set. Come on, the best wardrobe from the 60s-70s. and the attention to detail. The scene in the Mexican restaurant wherein the background the waiter was serving a dish where the pan was on fire. Gee I remember those days so vividly. The restaurant decore, brilliant.

Theres a reason Rick called Cliff Audie Murphy in the beginning. In the book Tarantino confirms he had the most Japanese kills in WW2 and was the ultimate badass. Also, Bloody Mary's come with celery and hot sauce often. Not bad either. Lol.
