Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Storyboards ►► bit.ly/2SPi69z
More Director's Playbook ►► bit.ly/2SMTez2
In this Once Upon a Time in Hollywood analysis, we’re going to look at how Quentin Tarantino directs one of the most suspenseful scenes in the film. Using a number of techniques from Tarantino’s bag of tricks, he crafts a scene that recalls some of his greatest influences - Sergio Leone and Alfred Hitchcock.
We’ve seen suspense sequences many times before in Quentin Tarantino movies like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, and The Hateful Eight. In this Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scene, he brings that same level of “Quentin Tarantino filmmaking” to the moment Cliff Booth arrives at Spahn Ranch.
After his Oscar win, we are reminded that Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a performance worth studying. In this scene, Cliff is highly suspicious of these individuals who have taken residence at Spahn Ranch - and all he wants is to make sure his old friend, George, is alive and well. But that journey from his car to George’s house is chock full of suspense.
Using directorial choices like POV shots, breaking the 180-degree rule, shot composition, editing and sound design, Quentin Tarantino brings his A-game. In this Once Upon a Time in Hollywood analysis, we’ll dig deep into the scene to see how he brought all of these elements together to create one of the most memorable scenes in the film.

The boat scene, where Cliff's wife is bitching and complaining, calling him a loser and he cracks open a Brew 102 and it sprays him in the face. Not sure if this was planned or not, but it somehow completed Cliff's frustration at that very moment.

Tarantino also nicely mirrored the "Western" theme of the film in that scene. Pitt's character as "The Stranger" coming into a hostile town, looking left and right at the suspicious townfolk watching from windows and porches. Also, after he stepped out of his car, the camera in that following shot of Pitt tilts up from his feet and comes to rest in a Cowboy shot, facing Spahn's house that acts like an opponent in a classic duel scene.

And here obviously besides the duel feeling on that desert stretch, the house is up on the hill with only one road leading to it and both it's flanks are covered with Manson's "structures" and followers. This is a modern gypsie castle, and that's why Tarantino broke the 180. To box Cliff in as stated. It's not obvious, because we only see gypsies appearing from the left during the first part, but he makes his point perfectly clear with the bus 5:16. AND the mouse in the trap isn't there to tell us Cliff is walking into a mouse trap. Tarantino doesn't use cheap tricks like such. It's there to enhance the decay and filth of the environment and characters. Not only are they filthy, they catch a mouse and leave it there to writhe until it's dead, which is a REALISTIC sign of what could've happened to the old man, not Cliff. Sometimes very good writing communicates two or more different things at the same time.

Tarantino not having a bloodbath in this scene is like M. Night Shyamalan not having a twist ending. It's called subverting expectations and I, for one, enjoyed the scene for what it was.

Do these people don’t know who they’re watching? We know Tarantino likes to toy with the audience, by leading us to the wrong conclusions. He doesn’t like predictability. He builds tension and whatever you were expecting, it’s NOT where it’ll go. The very reason he knew we were waiting for blood, it’s the very reason he didn’t give us any until the very end. I didn’t expect the ending the way it went. Genius at flawlessly and slowly getting us there 👌

What Quinten knows and many people know is that there was a stuntman named Shorty Shae who went to the ranch and was killed by Steve Grogan. The guy who Pitt punches out. Shorty's body was discovered in 1977. If you knew the backstory of the murdered stuntman at Spahn ranch the hair on the back of your neck would rise as Cliff walks up. Another reason to love this movie.

You cannot watch this movie without knowing any backstory. I made that mistake. I went into this without any knowledge and had no idea about the real events. So for me, it was just a very long movie with a strange ending. I didn’t get it. It’s not until after I read up on it, that I could put it all into perspective. Then, knowing all that, you watch it all very differently. It’s still too long though. I am of the opinion that no movie should be longer than 90 minutes. These days movies seem to get longer and longer.

I admire Studio Binder for all the knowledge they provide, and I thank you. One counter argument to Quentin "crossing the eye line to disorient us..." is that Quentin appropriately "crossed the line" merely to photograph the reverse (or "Reaction Shot") of Cliff's POV of the cabins. Without it, Quentin would only have had the POV of the cabins and no Cliff reaction to cut to. The correct "Reverse Shot" of Cliff's reaction is Cliff looking "Left to Right" to the cabins. My two cents.

I thought I could add that at 03:10, you can see how Pussycat covers the house. She becomes the obstacle. Of all the space on the screen, she's blocked to BLOCK the house. It is sort of heightened when she calls him with a hand gesture which looks like "come get this". I thought that was brilliant too. It could've been a simple two shot, but Tarantino was giving visual cues all along.

Brilliant breakdown! The one thing you didn’t mention, but adds to your assessment... when Quentin breaks the 180° rule it serves another function in cinematic literacy: In western cinema there is an observable common practice; when a protagonist is moving towards their goal they mostly move from screen left to screen right(probably due to how we read) signifying that they are headed in the correct orientation. When it is a villain moving or if our protagonist is heading into danger or a trap it is switched and they move from screen right to screen left... they are about to do something wrong or something bad will happen to them. Just one more subtle device to deliver the subconscious cues... masterful non-verbal film language on display, here.

Suspense is like a rubber band. It's about how far you can pull it before the band either snaps or you let go of it and everything is normal again. But, instead of pulling it until it snaps (like the ending of Reservoir Dogs) Tarantino pulls at it and then let's go of it. I was really on the edge when Tex was riding up to the ranch for Cliff only to find that Cliff was already driving away. Any kind of payoff will do if the buildup is great. This really is my favourite scene in the movie.

In a way, i think this whole scene is a microcosm and a foreshadow of the situation of Shannon Tate and the Manson family. Everyone knows the story of how she died and so we are kept throughout the movie in suspense of reaching that point in the film. But at the end of the movie, just like he does in this scene, he subverts our expectations and ends up keeping her alive.

A small thing which I felt added to the suspense was the quick shot which showed all of the people inside the house when Cliff gets to the ranch. They guard it like a base, and there is no sign or mention of an old man living there with them. I also believe suspence was added when a small crowd of people leave to house as Cliff walks towards it. This gives the feeling as though they know that something is going to happen in there, and they want to avoid the dangerous area.

This scene was a blend of different emotions and nuances, what particularly struck me sitting in the theatre watching for the first time was how, when he finally steps into the house, the tension has already mounted and it almost started to feel like a horror movie (to me). Then he masterfully lets us breath when Cliff is walking back to his car and the girls are all screaming "FUCK YOU" Lol and even more of a tension release when he beats that dudes face in for fucking with his car, putting him (and us as the audience) back in control. Made me think that Tarantino could really do any genre he wants, because of how deep his understanding of film "genre" is, and his ability to capture different moods and fuse them into one seamlessly

Watch the dog twice passing through like in spaghetti westerns as he goes to the house

I'm trying to use your software but it turns the entire script into a single page... Why does it function like that? I want to know how much space I have on a page and how many pages my script is currently taking up....

Tarantino broke a static scene by having dogs running across the screen when Cliff looks back from the door.

Has anyone ever noticed that the shadows completely changes through the scene? From when the car stops, to the two walking to the house?

For some moments I thought Brad was going to get murdered by the Manson family in this scene but, I said; "c'mon that's Brad Pitt", if Cliff Booth could beat Bruce Lee, he could also beat the Manson family, and that was what happened. On the other hand, Quentin's scripts are pure art, so all he writes on a paper becomes gold, so that's why his characters's dialogues are worth to listen to over, and over again like Sam Jackson's monologue in Pulp Fiction "Ezequiel 25:17", which doesn't exist in the Holy Bible haha.
