Baremboin y Beethoben dialogan con la musica que expresan sus manos sobre el teclado y es se llama conexion de espiritu y un enorme respeto por el idioma del autor . Cosa que el maestro conoce muy bien.

Barenboim has his tempo variations and small, small imperfections, but it's all worth it, considering how beautiful the music turns out. Unlike others, he makes me fall in love with the sonatas.

Most pianists play the first variation of the Andante in a way the composer didn't intend. Some play the right hand as the melody, while others surpress it so that it's barely heard. Of course, Barenboim balances it just the way Beethoven would have wanted it.

Around the time when he composed this sonata (which is sometimes nicknamed "domestica") B. also wrote a Bagatelle op. 33,6 with the advice "con una certa espressione parlante." Betthoven often translated verbal dialogue into instrumental music. I think it can be a key to the 1. mov. to think of a dialog between wive and Husband. The initial theme represents the wife, which is insistently asking for something the husband isn´t inclined to concede. After being patient for a while the husband gets angry imitating the female theme in the bass, while the right gives chaotic sounding trioles. Yet the conflict isn´t resolved and the husband finally leaves the house for a drink or two. At this point starts the second mov.

I play this sonata too and having read this lovely insight can imagine I will find it difficult to imagine the wife wanting and the husband (ie. me) not conceding. Perhaps it's just an Aussie thing. ;-)

I have extreme feelings about this interpretation - I fervently dislike the interpretation of the 1st movement (he plays it very well though), myself opting for a more "Mozarty" interpretation, but I think Barenboim is perfect in the 2nd movement. I just love how he brings out the polyphony. The 3rd is brilliant as well, although I have some issues with his left hand at times. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a top-notch pianist, it's just... I have my own vision for this sonata, I just can't ever seem to get it exactly the way I want when I play... There's just so many ways to play this sonata, and all of them are interesting!!! It's amazing how versatile it is - you can listen to it played by different people, and it will not cease to amaze and inspire!!!

In the 1. mov. Beethoven gets very close to Mozart. And Barenboim being a great Mozart player, does it very well although maybe a bit to slow. Great legato cantabile sound. (Edwin Fischer was one of Barenboims teachers!). The 2. mov. Beethoven makes a tribute to the viennese winehouse music & gemuetlichkeit, including an increasingly drunken state which he portraits in the variations. In the 3. mov. the protagonist is fully drunk, which is transferred to music with great and bizarre sense of humor. (See the incredible performance of Sokolov). Altogether the underrated masterpiece shows little known side of Beethoven before he was burdend with deafness.

A man who dealt with struggle but was never afraid to show the humorous side of his world! Great synopsis for this piece, the 1st movement being seldom and sort of operatic in its own respect! Your summary of the 2nd movement really perfectly captured what I had in mind, a gang of brothers enjoy drinks and laughter, and Beethoven goes on a drunken tangent, to me, this is the most characteristic movement in this piece because it parallels what you would expect from Beethoven! And the 3rd movement is just the great humour we've begun to see in Beethoven, you can't explain it but I could only say it's his way of pointing at life and laughing at it! So many sonatas after his plaguing deafness contain the humour that he has -- a stubborn student of the musical joker Haydn (my metaphor of Haydn), he really does capture his own characteristic humour in his works just as Haydn did. He once detested Haydn, but I could imagine he would never even attempt to ridicule Haydn later on as he surely would see how much he has learned from the old master in his reclusive period. Beethoven is a musical kaleidoscope which will never decay! He takes in the influences and reflects his own style separate from his contemporaries through effective use of the variation form and writing characteristic pieces which resemble the previous masters before himself!

this piece obsesses over half-step motives, much like sonata no. 8. its a really insight into beethoven's writing process, as he wrote so many pieces at once. symphony 5, 6, the 4th concerto and piano chorale, were all written around the same time and it is obvious that notes, phrases, even whole sections were moved between pieces before the final scores were determined. hearing this sonata makes me wonder if any of it had been sketches for the second or a possible third movement (extending the whole sonata to four) for the pathetique. The 2nd movement of this sonata in C major really would work extremely naturally within the pathetique.

What’s tough about the first movement is that there are so many slurs whether 2-note or phrase that you have to voice correctly. Without contrast this would definitely sound dry.
