Another outstanding video...which we've come to expect from you guys. (Nice touch on the clothes too, as someone has already mentioned. Attention to detail - we love that!) Why does this song fascinate us so? It's fun, it's a straight-ahead rocker, it's catchy, and it's a throwback to the Beatles' earlier days. Let's be honest, they had sort of strayed from this format as their music got more and more sophisticated. "909" could've been played at Shea Stadium. I'll bet they enjoyed the hell out of doing it on the rooftop. Nice job, lads ;) But seriously, you've gotta get Matty to collab with y'all. That kid is a walking-talking encyclopedia of Beatles music!

Admire you,guys! Always watching your videos with great interest. Speaking of this song-in the movie of the rooftop Ringo seemed to play the hi hats with his left foot, with some kind of tambourine mounted. That gave the groove a little different texture

ScappahNikolai - Not really, I mostly experiment in the moment and lean towards a clean tone. I try to match sustain and EQ in the room the best I can. I have been using a DI so I can experiment with tone after the fact. (Split signal so the amp in the room is still on but not recording) I reamp with minimal plug-ins to keep things as pure as I can for Neil. He adds any final grit with Redd17 channel preamps and such. All I can really stress is clean tones are important

ScappahNikolai - Good question. On a VoxAC30 you have Master Volume and Channel Volume. Keep the master volume on 10 and use the channel volume to set it to something pleasant in the room. Keeping a mic about a foot away from the amp is a great way to naturally compress the signal. Unless you are miking a live band, putting mics against the grill of an amp is just silly. I use a Wa47 and a Rhodes NT5. The Beatles used similar choices to these. A U87 too, or Wa87 for the cheaper clones

ScappahNikolai - I should add that Im talking about for a Beatles sound. Its fine to put a mic against the grill of an amp if you are going for that modern flat sound, metal and such you want to pick up that woofy part of an amp. You dont want that for beatles. It gets in the way of a mix. Not doing this will help the ‘Beatle guitar EQ’ just going into the mic

Did they really do it in B or did Spector slow it down by a semitone? Not the most guitar friendly key. C would be easier for me because I am a crap guitarist LOL

@@hobbayne Watch videos of Chuck Berry if you want to learn, that's what they were doing. This song is very similar to You Can't Catch Me, especially the intro. Chuck liked to play in odd keys too, so they would have picked up that up early on
