The cartridge i choose as my do all caliber was 7mm-08. Light and heavy bullets, factory ammunition, high BC bullets, low recoil, easy to find/resize brass from other calibers and so on.

That’s a good one. I think the 308 beats it out for me. Although if I’m limited to only one, I’d want something that shoots heavier bullets with a bit more oomph, so I might have to go to the 30-06.

My choice would be .308. While it is not the best at any one thing, it can be used for pretty much anything and it would be pretty good at most things and would cost less. Key advantages: 1) Factory ammo is widely available in an equally wide range of projectiles and loadings at good prices, 2) Components for reloading are just as widely available and priced with a large library of well tested loading data, 3) Barrel life is significantly longer which also drives down the cost, 4) You can ethically hunt pretty much anything with it. 1st runner up: 6.5CM - It has many of the same key advantages as .308 however it just scores a little lower. I couldn’t bring myself to choose it because, while it is better in precision shooting matches, the factory ammo is a little more expensive than .308, barrel life is less than .308 and it hits a little less hard than .308 at the distances I would be comfortable ethically hunting at. Because of these things I just couldn’t choose it as my “1 do it all caliber/cartridge”, though with some skillful debate someone might be able to change my mind. There are two that I would have really like to have chosen but just couldn’t in the end because of some of their disadvantages. 7mm-08: I would love this one because it sits almost perfectly in the sweet spot between .308 and 6.5CM. In the end I couldn’t choose this because of factory ammo availability and cost. It just isn’t popular enough to get the economy of scale and availability as .308 and 6.5CM. 6.5PRC: I totally understand why Piet chose this as it really adds the extra bit of velocity/range/energy that the 6.5CM is missing. I just couldn’t choose it because, in the US at least, factory ammo is harder to come by and is 2-3x more expensive than 6.5CM and .308 and reloading is more expensive as well. Also the shorter barrel life is a killer, again adding additional expense. 6.5PRC ends up being just too expensive for me to be able to choose as my “1 do it all caliber/cartridge’ it even though I really wanted it to be my first choice. It think we are just a few years to early for this to be “The One”. Talk to me again in 5 years and we will see. Maybe the cost of ammo/reloading will have dropped enough by then that only barrel life will be the the issue.

Guiding in Alaska since 1989 for Brown bears and Yukon Moose I have a nice salmon spawning stream I want to take you to with a lawn chair to sit there just before dark and through the night with a deer guns 30-06. In the morning I will come looking for your dead body and most likely a whole lot of torn up body parts! I have killed brown bears here and let some go that are 1200 to 1500 pounds. The reason I let these Hugh bears live was they had fur rub patches from just coming out of the dens in the spring. What is fun and educational is not letting the old bears know you are there to watch the bears moves and habits.

Indeed it is, what a nice round it is. You know it’s amazing how many guys are bitching about “oh you can’t find ammo for it.” I can’t wrap my head around owning a precision rifle BUT THEN expecting to go down to the store and buy ammo for it off the shelf! Haha. Maybe I was naive or asleep but I always associated reloading your own PRECISE ammo for your PRECISE rifle as one package and assumed that’s what pretty much everyone else did as well. Guess those guys on the store shelf ammo will never experience the full abilities of their precision rifles. Seems like such a waste

Just got mine a few months ago. It is definitely my new favorite. Had trouble finding 143 eld-x for deer season but was able to get to boxes of 147 eld match. Let me tell you, the forst deer I shot this season was with a match round. It was slightly 1/4ing away and right at 100 yards (I know.....) but i shot right behind and an inch or so above the knee. Let me tell you, it was like a high shoulder spine shot. All four legs pulled up and she dropped and didnt even twitch. The entry hole was normal but the bullet came apart, tore the entire top half of the heart off and exited in pieces on the far side making about a 1 inch hole. Would defiantly used the eld-x rounds if hunting something heavier like elk but have no doubt what this thing will do. With the un-named tunable muzzle break I never lose sight of the target now. I am having trouble getting brass and bullets (2 month wait) but once i get my annealer and enough brass i should be good to go.

I dinged my optic on my 30.06 during deer season and didn't have time to evaluate the weapon. As such i used the rifle i bought for my son. The Bergara hmr 6.5 prc for elk. Two bullets later and 2 elk later. I may not go back. I am sold on its capability. The 2nd elk was at 564 yards and dropped like a ton of bricks. But the bottom line is shot placement made that possible. This particular rifle makes shot placement breeze. Bottom line, in my hands this is an amazing cartridge.

Outstanding ballistic performance, wide selection of projectiles for hunting, target shooting, etc. AND it it a calibre that is easy in the shoulder, cal be shot all day long and I’ll stop there. Aha, so I wasn’t far off. 6.5PRC and the 270Win are very close indeed. The PRC will certainly fill the gap when using the round for competitive shooting, however, for hunting, the two calibre are nearly identical. I could be wrong but this is just my opinion. Down here in New Zealand, I would have no problem finding factory ammo in 270. The same could not be said for 6.5 PRC, yet. Great video and I think this will be the topic of conversation at the pub tonight.

There’s a lot of good choices depending on what’s important to the shooter. Range, purpose, animal size, barrel life, etc. For myself, I choose the 308 Win. Tons of reloading data, long barrel life, wide bullet selection, bolt guns are compact, readily available in an AR type rifle (depending on where you live) and the list goes on. It only gives ground to the 6.5CM past around 300-400 yards and not that much until past 500. Like I said, it really depends on the shooter’s priorities. Great channel BTW 👍

30-06... still one of the best and most versatile. You can push lighter 150s with reduced recoil and blast but unlike .308 you can also push a 200+ gr. pill that drops larger game DRT. As someone who lives in the PNW US the 30-06 is my "one caliber".

I love these "technical" videos of yours Piet. Can you please make a video where you break down the technicalities of why some calibers are more or less popular than others for long range shooting. Why are calibers like 243, 270, 30-06 etc less popular than the likes of 6.5, 7mm etc for longer ranges. Also why are the 6.5 calibers outperforming the 308 lately in matches or is this not an accurate statement? Also the influence of flat base bullets vs bow tail bullets.

I own dozens of rifles in various calibers. I have two in 6.5-284. It is a magnificent round and very accurate having won 1000 yard matches. My next rifle on my wish list is the 6.5PRC. It is also very accurate and packs a wee bit more punch than the 6.5-284 while producing less recoil. I think your choice is very wise for a do it all caliber.

I can’t imagine relying on buying factory ammo for a precision rifle. That defeats the whole purpose as there isn’t a factory round that can touch a hand craft precision load . When you compare the two , there is no decision to be made. That bares out not just from my experience but all the pro shooters around the world. They load their own of course.

I'm a .30 guy BUT that's only because that's what I'm familiar with. I was introduced to 7-08 a couple of years ago kind of by accident. Friend of mine has a Browning A-bolt in 7-08. He brought it to me saying it wouldn't fire consistently. I tore the bolt apart and sure enough the firing pin was bent. I order a new pin, reassemble, take it to the range. (he left me a full box of ammo) I didn't know what to expect recoil wise. I touched off the first round and fell in love. The recoil is low yet you know there's some steam behind it. It grouped very well for factory ammo that was a bit old. (just under 1 moa at 100 yds) Heck yes I fired all 20 rds. That's why they put 20 in a box right? ;-) (I did get him a fresh box to replace what I had shot) Yeah, I might have to get me a 7-08 just because.

Pete, I have the PRC from Master Piece Arms. Sweetest rifle I ever have owned. Yea your right, you can shoot that rifle all day. Cant say I have done that, but see that being possible. And don’t forget , you can push the Berger 156 grainers out of it and still hold high velocity’s (2950-3000 FPS) if your reloading on the high side when you want that. That round has kickass BC that really helps give that round a super ELR trajectory profile. It has a pretty high max chamber pressure rating considering other comparables. What are you waiting for?! 😎😉

I too would have to go with the 6.5 PRC. My 6.5 PRC shoots light out, was easy to load for, is pleasant to shoot, and I can hunt or shoot matches with it. To all of the people saying “good luck finding ammo for it”, well that’s pretty much the same story for all of the popular cartridges in hand gun or rifle. I have shot, own or owned many rifle in cartridges ranging from 22lr to 50 BMG, and would agree that the 6.5 PRC is an outstanding all around cartridge. I was always a huge fan of the big 7’s due to the speed and ballistic coefficients over the 30’s, without the extra recoil the 30’s get with heavy long high BC bullets. But since owning a 6.5 PRC I seldom ever shoot or reach for the 7 rem mag, 7 STW, or 28 Nosler. No need. The 6.5 PRC does all I need it to do with less recoil. And the 6.5 Creed is a very anemic cartridge for bigger game IMO.
