I married a magician who is also a bird trainer and now we travel the world together doing what we love with who we love, and spreading what we love. Until now I only watched your series with Morgan and some other videos with you but never saw one of your husband and I have to say he is really incredible! These two together are a gem to watch. Both of them honestly amazing. They have the air of authority that teachers/trainers need, but there's the authenticity, openness and empathy that helps clients/students feel comfortable opening up about all the struggles they're having.

Wow this was amazing! I had tears in my eyes when he stepped on his hand! This poor bird would have been rehomed for doing nothing wrong! For being bullied into stepping up! No disrespect to the owners they just didn't know!

I just learned something new today my parrot never got on my hand always hated me ima try this method. Recently he's been letting me kiss him he will come to me but he won't get on my hand thats it.

Old video but you guys, honestly, thank you so much for all the free lessons. I'll try this with my conure. I took him from my grandma because he was neglected and abused by people who live with her. The poor guy is scared of everything, including hands. I have gained trust with him this last weeks but he still hates my hand. I think with this lesson I can manage to make him more comfortable and earn his trust. God bless you for helping birds and humans so much

@@aykfc yes I was thinking the same thing.. lol teaching couples to actually listen to the other all over again after perhaps losing the communication/trust.. including body language and re-learning spatial and emotional respect. He’s definitely used the tools of psychology family therapy positioning, anxiety reduction and behavioral therapy, mindfulness and a little of the dog whisperer. 😊 Good work there... the new bird whisperer. Hopefully, couples and Americans particularly can learn this art of respectful communication.

It's amazing how much I can see that the "human problem" in this training session is actually very much a loving person that just misunderstood some of the foreign language the bird is speaking.

@@lastfirst5863 but if we are going to collect animals then it's really unfair to the animals that are trying to tell us what they want and need and we don't listen because we haven't done enough research. Why are so many birds and dogs in terrible abusive situations? It certainly isn't their fault. They aren't asking to be bred in abundance and sold to morons.

@@becominghero9754 I didn't mean to say the people in the video are morons, kay? They are fighting through whatever is wrong with their birds and wanting to fix it. However, I would say that morons are drawn to birds like parrots because cockatoos are the most abused and the most given up or abandoned bird. Those people who give up are morons, I'm sure you'd agree a person who gets any animal without research then finds out just how tough it really is, is a moron. Am I wrong?

So many of us make the innocent mistake of treating our bird the same as we treat our dog. They are metaphorically from different planets! We owe it to our birds to build that trust & understanding what they require & not treat them like dogs who live for our commands. I am new to the world of birds, but that is something important I have learned. Thank you Bird Tricks. Much appreciated knowledge! You really do help us to be the best we can for our feathered loved ones! 🐣🐦🕊

I agree with you on the amazon's beak being pretty overgrown. It appeared close to interfering with his ability to eat.

I have this exact kind of amazon and have seen others, it’s a common issue with them. You just gotta file it and encourage them to grind it on their own.

It is a common problem with Orange Wings. If they have something abrasive to rub against they'll wear it down on their own. This needs a trip to a good avian vet.

I have a suncrowned Amazon and mine generally does not pare her beak until it's quite long. She has every opportunity to keep it trim herself. When she does pare it she takes it pretty low.

Omg! The training in the morning before breakfast tip was soooo helpful! I rescued two parakeets that we’re afraid of everything and I couldn’t gain their trust since I got them 4 months ago... but today they ate out of my hand! (First day trying this method too) 🤗 I’m so happy~ hopefully after a few weeks of doing this, they’ll trust me ☺️

I can’t wait to try this training tip with my budgie and cockatiel tomorrow morning 🤩 I’ve always trained in the evening after they’ve had a chance to fill their little bellies and wondered why I wasn’t getting the results I was hoping for.

I wish I had come across this video 30 years ago. When I was a kid my grandma had inherited a panama amazon parrot from her father, or uncle, I cannot recall, but it was an older family member. If you are familiar with the show My Cat from Hell, this was the bird from hell. I now know why he was like that. This bird wasn't fed right at all, locked in a smaller cage with no room to fly, never let out at all. We (the kids, the teens, and almost all the adults as well...) were not even allowed to go near this bird because of how aggressive he was (lunging, biting, hissing, laughing after someone cowered (yes he straight up laughed, then said "but whyyyyy"). Most of the time I just remember a sheet being over his cage. My grandma got sick of dealing with it and passed him on to my aunt. Same outcome. Bad diet, always in the cage. She is also a heavy chain smoker.... He died when I was 14/15 (the bird itself was only 25-30 years old at time of passing), but because of this bird, I never wanted a bird ever (and I grew up around every kind of animal you can think of). This bird gave me a serious level of trauma I suppose. After a very very long time looking up birds, seeing what one would fit me, and waiting for stability in my own life, so I could fit into a birds lifestyle... Well, I am now 37, and I am now just getting 2 parakeets for the first time (Yesterday even!, but I had all their supplies ready weeks beforehand). I cannot wait to start earning my place in their little flock. I do at some point want a larger bird, maybe not hyacinth macaw levels (even though it is my fav), but this is a safe first step I hope. Watched several of your other videos, plan on watching the rest, also seen there is a cookbook, I am going to get once funds become available. I already know my diet is bad, I get the feeling your cookbook for birds is going to end up helping me lose a lot of weight as well!

My dad owned a petstore in the late 1980s. He had several parrots and constantly took in parrots from people. He had a sketchy scarlett macaw he took in from hispanic gangsters. "Albert" (super creepy hearing him say Alllbert) cussed my mom out in Spanish under his breath. Several family members have parrot phobias from that bird lol. My cousin was 3 years old. Walking by Albert. Albert quickly moved close as possible to my cousin and shrieked as loud as he could. Terrified my cousin

I own all of the one day miracles... it is wonderful to see them again. Thanks for putting them on youtube. I have been following you for the first day when it was just Chet and Dave. I have So enjoyed Your Lifes work with the birds and helping so many people. I even saw you in person. what a great day that was. I wish I could have talk to you, but you were too busy. I will never forget the awesome work and videos i have learned so much from. You have saved more birds then you will ever know.

I’ve been an equestrian for most of my life. I gave up horses a little over a year ago and just got my first birds…a 3 month old Cockatiel and 10 month old Budgie. It’s interesting how similar the training and philosophy for horses and birds are. I felt like I was watching natural horsemanship for birds. Natural Bird-man-ship, as Pat Parelli would undoubtedly say. Thank you sorry much for this! I hope I see more videos like this. ❤️ 🦜

Shahzeb Nasir about 2002 get this ..my daughter was born on 27th of March 2002..she turned 18 last week..I’ve been looking for a chick for 2 years since the bird my grandad had died..he’d left the bird with us when my grandad died..so while looking for a bird a rescue was my first hope but there’s not many macaw in Ireland..I’ve not seen another ever here..mind there are a few. But none in rescue. So at the end of last season I missed out on 3 different young birds.. but my chick was born. Hatched on the 27th of March this year ..he is a week old now..but he hatched at 3.40pm my daughter was born at 4.20pm ..I guess it’s the universes way of saying this it the bird I’ve been weighting on ..another bird I just missed out on getting died 2 weeks after the guy who bought him got him home...there’s nothing cooler than fate stepping in and doing it her way..I feel so bad for the guy who got that bird..but he was sneaky about getting the bird in the first place..he out bid me ..I only found that out after his new bird died..karmas a bitch....

When training any fearful animal, you have to let the animal come to you and give positive rewards. Never about dominance. Great video.

Something wrong with Merlins beak? Looks overgrown. I had an Amazon for 6 years(death in the family unfortunately I couldn't keep him). He was a man's bird, except he tolerated me for some reason.

Yes, Merlin's overgrown beak is a concern. He should be taken to an avian veterinarian to have a health check, first and foremost. Overgrown beaks can be a sign of a medical problem, as well as not having chewing activities or chewing enrichment.

@@aykfc a Cockatiel,he's so funny and whistles heaps of tunes and phrases. My gf and I get him out like 3-6 hrs a night and during the day if we home. He just wants to be on our shoulders haha

This video posted at the right time for me. Thank you!! My Amazon of 22 yrs. was recently reunited with a flock mate she was raised with 20 years ago when he came to live with us a year ago. I’ve never had a problem with her stepping up or being out of the cage around me but She has become very aggressive towards me and won’t step up or let me near her without attacking me. She does do touch training so I’m going to start using it to get her to step up on my hand again and hopefully trusting me again. The only problem I have is she bites the hand I use to give her reward so I use a small container that holds the treats and I let her take it from the container after I click. Is this ok to do?

My amazon was the devils child but after leaving him to trust on his own has worked we never forced it and now he is madly in love with me 😂 only took 3 months and now we can’t eat a meal with out the amazon throwing his head in it 😀

Merlin's beak needs a trim - it's quite overgrown -- that condition might contribute to his moodiness

I noticed that. He needs some toys that he can chew on an expend some energy. They need play. My Orange Wing was the sweetest bird but he did not like being startled. He was always willing to play and would happily sit on my shoulder for an hour. I always respected his limits.

I’m using this on my new rescue bird! He’s only comfortable stepping up when on the ground and is very fearful of hands. I’m going to start clicker training : )

Beautiful! Dave, you saved a bird who was loved from potentially being re-homed. Atleast, that's what it sounded like as a possibility. I pray that anyone who is experiencing a lack of communication with their bird will see this video and hopefully, more beautiful feathered families will be able to live long, healthy and loving lives together. When I see this it makes me wonder why as humans we don't seem to know how to read each other's body language, respect boundaries and differences in order to keep our extremely invaluable families and relationships together. Lovely to experience this family being made whole again 🦕🙏🕊

When I first got my cockatiel, I put my hand in his cage every single day everytime I went into my bedroom. And after it took a month. Barney one day, got on my finger. And the rest wS history. I took his cage in the living room. He was as happy as can be. He LOVED landing on my mom's head. And he LOVED hanging out with my dad. Especially when he was doing his paperwork!!!

I watch these videos with so much longing. When I lived in S. Texas I had an Amazon, Chestnut fronted Macaw, Love Birds of two varieties a pair of Fishers and a pair of the most beautiful red and green Lovebirds whose proper breed I don’t remember, Zebra Finches and several parakeets in a room set aside as an aviary. The Macaw never did learn not to bite and when I returned to the Northeast I had to leave them all behind because I was driving and visiting friends as I drove North taking two weeks of travel. I felt so guilty but I knew they had the best homes. My friends sent me pictures of them through the years. Time passes and so did several of my babies. My first bird was a double yellow Amazon which had pin feathers when I bought him at a market. He had to be quarantined and he was so beautiful and sweet. My friend had gotten to know all my birds when I would work for several days she cared for them and was so good with them. I think she was better with them than I was. She took them with her when she left Texas for Colorado forty years ago. I wish I had someone like you to teach me fifty years ago!💔

I actually really value what you guys have taught me! I may be able to positively interact with many birds in my life now because of this. I have a responsibility to raise my own bubby lovebirds safely and to have as many positive interactions with birds in the world as i can

Absolutely awesome video! I have a 33 yr old Yellow Nap Amazon that I believe was mistreated. After having him a yr I think he really wants to be friends but is so full of fear and aggression. This video gave me some starting points to work with him. I absolutely love your web page and all the video's you put out. So helpful to all bird owners newbies and experienced!

A Big YESSS from @msterdam, love to see that a birdowner is longing for learning the body language/ communication with his/ her bird. When the owner relaxes, when giggling and blushing about 'pretty please', when he understood why it was working, that was the moment Merlin steps up without any hesitation no more scare for the hand. Respect earns trust and a life long friendship with animals. That was the trust respect moment imo, when the 'majic' happens. Cheer up for making happy birds to train the owners. YEAY 🤗

I love this video!!!! I am about to take in four budgies who I was told bite.. I just took in two that needed a home about three months ago and they are doing amazing!!! I followed your tips on target training.. backing off... offering hand but not forcing.. and we got both of our birds where they don't bite now. So I am now getting ready to bring in four that do... lol loved the video.. brought me to tears to see such success with patience.. I have had parrots my whole life. I love birds.

It was amazing that I came across this video on the very day I was asking myself if anyone does clicker training with birds! You certainly answered that well and showed how effective it is and how quickly the bird caught on. I am a dog trainer of 50+ years and the techniques you showed (clicker training, luring, etc.) were very parallel to what we can use in dog training. I have had many birds and just took in a budgie that someone had rescued from the woods who is very wild. She is the reason I was thinking about clicker training. I was so excited to watch this and see the results that John got with his bird. (Years ago, I did clicker training with chickens with Bob Bailey and wife Margaret.) Thank you for answering my question. I knew it could be done, but wondered if anyone was actively using it. Thanks for another great video! I have already made good progress with the budgie in just a couple of days. I also have a cockatiel that I am bird sitting for over a month and truly have caught the bug to have another cockatiel of my own! I would live for you to do a video on what to do with a parrot who screams every time you leave her sight! I had one years ago that wouldn't let me leave the room without screaming for me to come back. I hadn't had her for very long, having taken her from a friend who could no longer keep her. I had to give the bird back because I just couldn't handle the screaming and didn't know what to do about it. Family matters were not good at that time and she had to go. But I would love to hear how to fix that kind of problem. I'm sure that others would, too. Thanks for your wonderful expertise! You are to birds what I am to dogs. I love them both!

Dave is amazing... he is serving us kind confidence (reminds me of what what people love about Anthony on Queer Eye) and brilliant positive reinforcement training (like world agility champion dog trainer Susan Garrett). I was spellbound and I don’t even have a bird! I will subscribe and check out your website! Hmm... now I want to adopt a bird and try to offer it a new life!

I had an orange winged Amazon just like the one in this video. He was a rescue, he was around 60 years old, and I had him for 20 years of that. He passed away this year, and I miss him.

My friends do have birds and I've spent lot of time giving treats to them and enjoyed pretty much, but I've not quite owend one for me as much i like to do so. Watching this my heart melt towards what I saw. Watching this gives me confidence to go ahead and have a bird.🌹
