I came back from neuropraxia of the right hand following a bicep tendon repair last summer, which meant I was unable to open or spread the fingers of that hand. I could, however, loosely hold a pick, and so I slowly built my technique back up day by day. I considered that to be a major part of my physical therapy, and it was always encouraging to see the progress, however slow. Your situation is different but I recognize the same spirit of tackling the obstacles head on. All the best.

Hi Phil. Sounding great! I really like your backing tracks, and use them a lot. I'm sorry to hear about your accident. I can imagine that you may have moments of despair about losing a finger, so I just want to share this thought with you. I am a violinist, I've been playing for 60 years, country music, traditional Irish music, rock n roll, punk, blues, and in the last few years jazz. About 15 years ago I started to lose the use of the little-finger on my left hand as a result of Dupuyten's Contracture. At the time, an operation was too risky for my healthy fingers, although the medical options have now moved on. So the curvature became irredeemable, and can no longer be corrected. I was faced with stopping playing, or re-engineering the way that I played. At first it was very disheartening, but I gradually got on top of it. The strangest thing is this. I believe that as a direct consequence of the loss of the use of that finger, I am now a better player than before. It forced me to be more adventurous, more inventive, and above all to learn to take 'leaps of faith' that I'd never made before. Wishing you hope, courage, and a good recovery.

I think all musicians go through travails, here’s my humble story . . . I have service connected PTSD and there is no such thing as a mild case. And for the first time here, I'm admitted experiencing paralyzing bouts of depression, bad/weird dreams, migraines whereby I can’t do a damn thing, let alone music . No guitar, sax, no working in my studio set up. It’s sheer hell and I wouldn’t wish this on any one. This is something I do not talk about. Not even with family. I’ve learn to accept and find ways to deal with it. Prayer and mediation helps and I strive avoid the temptation of self medicate the funk away. But when a spark of motivation hits, it is soooo cathartic! That happened last week when I saw you play Woody n You while lying in bed. I jumped up and grabbed my L5 and played along. Then I played through the Giant Steps track. Albeit rusty, I sat up and practiced from 1:00 am to 4:00. I did that three days in a row! I picked up my alto for the first time in months and played along to your tracks. I even practiced my midi organ set up. I could feel and hear that emotional zip as I played. I’m coming to realize there’s a bigger picture to all of this. We experience bad stuff to grow spiritually as well as emotionally. I continue to appreciate you and your work and how its helped me. I really can’t thank you enough (tear wipe). WE ALL LOVE YOU AND WE GOT YOUR BACK!
