A long look at the career of Everything But the Girl, the band that missed you like the deserts missed the rain and then vanished into the shifting sands. Or did they??

Between this song and I Took A Pill In Ibiza, I think we’ve proven that the correct use of a dance beat can make a song infinitely sadder than an acoustic guitar ever could.

If you wanna know how powerful the line "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" is, the video clip for this song is titled something like "Missing by Everything but the Girl" and it has 6 million views. Meanwhile a video of only a desert with this song playing in the background titled "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" has 22 million views.

Agreed, it was the song that got me to get the album though. Best album of theirs, I reckon. Consistently good. Favourite song off it's probably Group Four, it's just got this filthy sound to it that I love as the pretty vocals weave in and out, although the title track grew on me a lot too. Actually going off the beaten path a bit, my favourite's probably one of the b-sides off it, Euro Zero Zero. Has such a flow to it, and that bassline. Just, such a track.

Todd used “Show Me Love” as one of his examples for uninteresting 90s dance music in the “What Is Love” video, but I’d still love for him to do an episode on it so he can see what a miracle Stonebridge worked on the original Robin S. song.
@xerxsesbreak8455
@xerxsesbreak8455 6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it confuses me, though. For example, the original version of the sound of silence is a much more evocative piece than the version that actually became a hit. The other version of the song certainly isn't bad -- it has a nice driving feel to it --, but it just doesn't feel quite as reflective of the song's intent to me.

There was one other big trip-hop crossover in the United States that actually reminds me a lot of Tracey Thorne. That being Dido. You all remember Dido, right? Most people probably only know her for singing the song that Eminem sampled for "Stan", recontextualizing what was originally a mellow, tribal, folk-y love song into... well, "Stan". But she actually had a couple of hits in the early 2000s after that. While she's not a trip-hop artist, she was heavily involved in that scene, doing vocals for the act Faithless (a group her brother is part of), and her own music is heavily influenced by trip-hop and electronica. She's a great artist if you're into more mellow, female singer-songwriter-y music with a more electronic flare to it. Even though she's not a one-hit wonder (she had two charting hits, "Thank You" and "White Flag"), I would love for Todd to cover Dido on this show at some point. I brought her up simply because Tracey Thorne's voice and overall vibe reminds me so much of Dido.

Jennifer Nichole - She's one of my favorites. Sadly, she doesn't put out music nearly enough. Her last release was in 2013, which was her first album since 2008, which came right after another five-year hiatus. I think we're due for another Dido album pretty soon. At least I hope so. It's strange that no one remembers her, because her first two albums were hugely successful and she's highly respected in the U.K.

"Biggest Billboard hit" is used in this video to mean "longest run at #1 in Billboard history". Which was true at the time (the song has since been dethroned by Old Town Road). In fact, One Sweet Day wasn't even the biggest hit of its chart year, 1996. It made it to #2 on the year-end, behind another One Hit Wonderland alumnus, Macarena.

trc2rockon yah these guys seem like a more soft-spoken, low-key Cranberries. In fact that's probably the reason for their lack of success, they just aren't celebirty-type people. They seem reserved, soft-spoken, and thoughtful; good qualities for making good music, but just a bit too low energy to become big hitters in the industry. They got their one hit and they were happy enough with it to limit their future taking off by having kids, so I say good for them

Come on now Todd, if they are happily married with two kids, they're still living well on their music careers, and they still enjoy making music, I'd say they succeeded very well. Becoming more famous would have started interfering with their family life, and if that's more important to them, I'd say that's a great decision.

This is a pop music review channel and thus asks about the question about success in that venue. Though I'm kind of reminded of the OHW on Butthole Surfers in that, they didn't get more because they didn't want more. They did what they wanted to do and presumably are still doing it, and that's a good measure of success beyond how their songs chart.

there are 2 kinds of one-hit wonders, those who disappear from music altogether and those who use their success to continue making music indefinitely... EBTG is one of the best examples of the latter. Their material is consistently brilliant, even if it lacks a wide audience.

There's two autobiographies from Tracy Thorn now, one focusing on singing and one on her whole life, and she writes regular columns for newspapers, and the way she tells it is a beautiful story of someone who's done music on her own terms for her whole life. Having read them (and I really recommend them), there's a really fun extra thing I can add: before Everything But The Girl, while still at school, she and another schoolgirl formed The Marine Girls and recorded in their shed. Their album Beach Party "was named as one of Kurt Cobain's 50 favourite albums in his diaries." When she met Ben Watt and started Everything But The Girl, they had their first success while she was still at university. I do love the dark joke of "could you be dead? you always were two steps ahead" but I never liked EBTG as much as Tracey Thorn's solo stuff (or even the Marine Girls, now I've actually heard them, they really were pretty great.)

I'm surprised how many people here say they don't remember this song from back then. Todd might be under-selling it, this song was absolutely huge. I lived through the '90s, I was there, this song played regularly on the radio for what seemed like years. Hell, it was on the charts so long I swore somebody else like Mariah Carey must've recorded a cover version and that somehow might've charted. Obviously looking that up now, apparently that didn't happen, but it sure seemed like it had. I wasn't complaining, it's a great song, but this was huge.

I think Todd has missed an example of trip-hop in the US charts, ironically involving an artist he references in the video. That's the 1990 DNA remix of Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner. It was an unauthorised re-mix, but Suzanne being the lovely person she is, agreed to it being released and it turned out to be a hugely successful one too and got, I believe, to #5 in the US charts and hit the top of a number of national charts. So taken was Suzanne with it, that when I saw her performing at the Cornbury Festival in Oxfordshire about 15 years ago, she made a particular point of playing that version. By a complete coincidence, I retired to the area and now live only about a mile from where that festival was held. DNA (not to be confused with the US band) were from Bath, just down the road from Bristol from whence Massive Attack originates. Nb. On the subject of Massive Attack, the music video clip of Tracey walking down the street can't help but remind me of the epic 5 minute 21 second single take tracking shot video of vocalist Shara Nelson in the music video for the song.

She wouldn’t dress up when she collected her kid from outside the London School and was ignored & unknown by the Cliques of flashy bitchy other mums swanking in their new or credit laden 4WD vehicles ..until the rainy day when a massive black new Range Rover c/w black windows pulled up . She said of how a window slowly wound down to reveal George Micheal.. calling out “ hey - Tracey ..want a lift ? “ He’d met her at TOTP years before & hadn’t forgotten her.
