E Swat should have gotten a sequel for sure! The first game was okay but a sequel could have improved upon it cuz it did feel kinda boring and maybe harder than it should have been. Also Chakan The Forever Man DEFINITELY should have had a sequel. That game was just BRUTAL and not much fun and a sequel could have been released to make it easier and more fun.

A few people think this, but it's not. It's a mashup of different Climax games, it doesn't carry over the story or the universe. Gamespot called it a sequel which is where I think people got the idea that it was a sequel.

In the case of Landstalker while there was no formal follow-up using the same franchise title it did get a successor on the Saturn in the form of Dark Savior. Same developers (Climax) also made Alundra in the same puzzle platforming mold on the PS1. Some good sleeper games that were made on Genesis that didn't get a prompt follow-up are: Master of Monsters Gaiares Sword of Vermilion Ghostbusters Mystic Defender Crusader of Centy (They barely distributed in the first place) Ristar Herzog Zwei They did make a MoM game eventually on the PS1 but that is not in the spirit of the Genesis version at all from what I have read.

Also, some that might not have reached your criteria of critical success but I think are well remembered one hit wonders : Ristar, Dynamite Heady, Kid Chameleon and Dune: battle for Arrakis, which while technically a sequel in name, is totally different from the first game (if I'm not mistaken its an adventure game rather than RTS), and birthed the RTS genre!

The issue with these modern remakes and it’s not a real issue, just a defence for the original creators. It’s the allocated ROM size. Today getting a 8mb rom chip for a fake cartridge or just making an 8mb file is super easy and cheap. Back in the day ROM size was a budget they had to take care of. As the original developers only had 4mbits, which is 512 kilobytes, those guys were working with one hand behind their back. Games like the original Sonic, Golden Axe 1 show you can still make a formidable game on that size, but modern remakes don’t do that. Still pretty cool what Pyron are doing, but for that to have the go ahead back in the day was a tall task, as costs were just way different.
@Myako
@Myako 2 жыл бұрын
@@sloppynyuszi I would say that "time" and "tools" where even bigger factors. Comercial games are made to coincide with schedules homebrew don't have to adjust to. Also, game developing tools today are much more potent and versatile today. Finally, developers back then did not have ~34 years of experience with the hardware like they do today.
@ostiariusalpha
@ostiariusalpha 2 жыл бұрын
@@sloppynyuszi That's right about ROM chips limiting development. In fact, Sega developed some pretty sophisticated compression algorithms just to keep the ROM size down. That being said, Konami's management definitely cheaped out on the Sunset Riders ROM size versus what was actually available and how much more profitable a better port could have been. Sometimes you have to spend more money to make more money.

I think ,back in the day, a successful game was fine as a standalone as it was often the developer that was the "franchise" back then. DeCapAttack is so much fun--it's one of those games that make me feel like it could've been a Beetlejuice (cartoon) title but they didn't get the licensing. Alisia Dragoon is a lot of fun--AND a strong female hero made it right up Lady Laci's alley. Was Zero Tolerance one you and Sega Head have discussed before? It seems familiar.

great video, I loved comix zone, the only downside that game has is how ridiculous short it is (you can beat it in 15 minutes if you know what to do, and it took me around an hour to finish it the first time i played it) Land stalker was a game that blew my mind at the time, and i really liked this tille (I also loved lady stalker as well, tough i dont know why lady looks like that when it could have been so much better), and then there is the amazing Dark Savior fot the Saturn, wich is basically a land stalker 2 (tough is not). What I do not understand is the comparation with zelda (not so similar and i still think zelda is superior) but a more zelda like game would be story of thor, wich is another amazing game). Alien Storm was a game i really loved on the arcades (the genesis version is ok but sort of different) , i do not think it would have worked as a franchise , probably the sequel would not have worked that well. I reaaaaally enjoyed playing super smash tv on my snes, too bad the game got no sequel Alisia dragoon was a game that reaaaaaaaally could have a sequel, and the mechanics it used could easily been updated to modern gaming, a shame that this game was forgotten and the same applies to Alien Soldier... sunset riders got no squel, buuuuuuuut konami made 3 other games that are basically "sequels" Cow Boys of Moo Mesa , Mystic Warriors (This one made by the same ppl that made SR) AND the Génesis versión has so Manny differences that i take that game as some Sort of "dlc" that i call "the revenge of the surviving bosses" :p
