First, great job! Second...I'm so very grateful that you've gotten to the bottom of a serious health matter and are receiving treatment that has made a difference for you! And third, I've watched you, maybe one year? Your sense of humor and down to earth attitude is refreshing. You brighten my day, young friend. I'm 76, live in Georgia, and my heart goes out to you Texans. Heat, terrible!

It always amazes me how we can push off a task for so long because it seems so overwhelming and then get it done in 30 minutes 😆 I’m so guilty of this too. My state requires us to create a portfolio to show progress in learning from the beginning, middle and end of the year. I use a 3” binder, dividers, and clear protective sleeves and put it together throughout the year as we finish subjects. It keeps everything all in one place and is an awesome keepsake ❤

Consider having your kids make a portfolio for their schoolwork they are most proud of as part of the homeschool day. Evaluation, critique and reflection are important skills. And as a happy side note anything they don't seem important enough for their portfolio has already been deemed (by someone else) as not important.

I agree! While we don’t do grades until high school, we compile best work in each year/“grade”. During the year I write notes about the pieces of work that were a particular breakthrough or milestone.

I started this simply because like Shannon everything felt important. I did keep their journals too just because it was so cute to see the progression of the drawing but everything else I put in their portfolio and just kept something form beginning, middle, and end of the school year for each subject our state requires us to teach. Our State GA doesn’t mandate the portfolio but it might help with college admission or at least be fun for us to lol through and see each year.

Schoolwork and art work is one of the hardest thing for me as well. My kids would gladly get rid of everything. So I like to look through the art and date it. Then I try and organize by school year. My kids Kindergarten teacher made them a spiral bound portfolio and an extra big folder to put extra work. I still go through it and weed things out. I think each year you develop a little more distance to the work and can say goodbye to it. I also like to take pictures of my kid next to their work. So this way I could let go of the big artwork and keep the photo as the momento instead.

We homeschool and the rule of thumb is keeping a small selection of best work from every subject that shows progress over the year, plus a handful of special art or other similar works. We use the folders with brads built in and hole punch everything and file it away. Each year I go back through all the years and find a couple of things that no longer feel sentimental, and it’s also easy to remove work samples that have become cumbersome as the years pass. I purchased one large hanging file box for each of them and my hope is that when they graduate I will hand them the one box each and that will be all of their school things. I keep other sentimental items (baby things, special stuffies, etc, elsewhere and also try to go back through it annually. Eventually I’d like the kids to help decide their best work to keep.

We keep the journals but throw out the academia papers. We store art work that we decide to keep in the seasonal decorations they belong to Christmas, valentines day etc. This has saved us a ton in decorations over the years and the grandkids get so excited to see their art work hung up throughout the year especially when it's next to aunts or mom's art work.😂

We home schooled and through the summer we went to one math page and an hour of reading. Kept their skills up. Also in May, they were the ones to decide to keep only 5 papers for their memory box. On the last day of the school year, they went through everything and we reviewed what were their favorites thing to study. Last week I got the school supplies for my grands. I had missed that adventure since my kids went to college...19 years ago! Well done on getting everything organized for a new year!!

I like to sing 'I am the champioooon of the woooorld!' when I've finished a big task or am very proud of myself - with much interpretative arm dancing and such like. When you were dealing with the kid's notebooks I thought of the slates the children on Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie used - where you'd need to wipe it off over and over to be able to use it but only had the one item at the end of the day. We produce so much more waste product in our age having access to unlimited paper for cheap along with other stuff. I don't envy you the decision making on that one and can only say the unhelpful - make sure the keeping doesn't get in the way of enjoying the doing. Also, I might add, that I loved you look - your hair and the make-up - absolutely in love with your look. Loved a peek at the puppies as well.

For kids school work, we keep the best from each week, then once a month we go through everything we saved each week and pick the best from the month and then it goes in their keepsake box which is a file box with different folders for each grade. It would be impossible to keep everything the school sent them home with, not every assignment is special. Reading stories on Reddit of kids who inherited all the school work their parents saved and really didn't care helped me be a little more ruthless about what we keep.

Tip from a larger girl who raised her thermostat to 78 recently -- I am sure you have ceiling fans which help, but you may want to get yourself a small USB chargeable fan to keep on you when you are working up a sweat. I have one on my rollator that was made for a stoller and it is a life saver when I am walking to my sister's house next door in this heat or if I have been sweeping or vacuuming or doing any housework and start to sweat.

I was thinking about what you said about your craft closet, and I may have a suggestion. At Homedpot, they have these fan things that you cut into the wall, and it helps pull the air through to spots that don't get the air serculation they need. Maybe that might work for there. Also wanted you to know absolutely wonderful you are and how much you have inspired me in my hectic home.

My kids do art on Fridays and it immediately goes into clear protective sleeves and into their art binder. I put cover pages with their name, grade, and school year, and place those in clear protective sleeves as a divider of each year. The idea is they will have 32 (for 32 weeks of school) saved art projects in 1 place. I also do the same for writing. Another idea, my friend takes photos of her children's art and makes a Shutterfly or Walgreens photo book.

We start our homeschool at 10 am. We ease into it with a hymn and then a Songs for Saplings catechism song. Then I move into preschool with my 4 year old. Her brother (1st grade equivalent) likes to watch her stuff, too. She finishes with a read aloud of a book on KZfaq, which gives me an opportunity to get some laundry started, dishes washed, etc. When that's done, it's his turn and the younger two go to play so I can give him undivided attention for his reading and handwriting lessons. He has a break after 3 subjects when everyone gets a snack or we break for lunch, depending on how quick the day is going.

I saved a box of the kids art projects. When I retired and had moved said box both kids were like what is it? And could care less about those things. I’d get rid of it after reviewing at the end of the year. 😊

I'm decluttering right with you on our school things. I said well dang I need to get my life together. I'm over the heat in Georgia. Our bill generated the other day and I about passed out. Thankfully I was already sitting. 🤣🤣

Fantasmagoric- means dream like. That may be a good word. 😊 That one I learned in highschool and has been rattling around in there. 😂 Thanks for pulling that out of the abyss with your fun words.

I hope your health is doing better. Seeing your closet and thinking about my closets made me wonder how many hours of my life I've spent trying to organize closets. I probably don't want to know that number.😬

The next time you Declutter the closet, I challenge you to get rid of anything that hasn’t been used in a year. And if there is something that hasn’t been used in a year that you just can’t bear to part with, put it in a box, close it completely up, and date it. Leave the box in the closet but out of the way. In another year if you still haven’t used anything from the box, donate it without looking inside.

The red lipstick looks very nice on you. I’ve always felt the same way. I feel like it’s all over the place and I just never got used to it so I never used it anymore but you look really good in it sending you prayers for your health Please be safe and God bless.
