One Hour Better - Decluttering a Classroom with Ms. Gardenia

I'm trying something new! I helped Darla declutter her Speech Language Pathologist Classroom. I learned that SLPs (like Theatre Arts teachers) can find a reason to keep anything!
I'm calling these videos (assuming there will be more someday) One Hour Better Videos. We set the timer for an hour and decluttered using my process from Decluttering at the Speed of Life so we never created a bigger mess. When you know you're only going to make progress, you can work for any amount of time.

Great reasoning on those gum containers, ladies. Don’t get caught up with “someone could use this” thinking on every single decision. That’s a recipe for mental fatigue. It’s OK to just pitch some stuff & move on.

Made me laugh Dana. I helped a lady move her family's life belongings into 5 public storage units. She kept all those gum containers! I nearly got swept up in it too because we always think, "But it could be such a useful container for SOMETHING"

I not only use this at home but at work when I"m sorting emails into separate folders for instance. I just wanted to say thank you. The container concept is pretty cool too, but the questions are AWESOME!! Thank you for the videos :)

That's where i usually go for yarn and other craft stuff. This was amazing Dana. Your ‘container concept’ and pertinent questions are life changing, even for this retired grandmother. Helpful hint for YOU Dana, - when cutting out items on a large sheet, such as those laminated pages, cut away the entire excess margin first. This makes it less awkward to then cut each individual piece. 💝

Dana, I love your question "where would I look for it first". I find myself using that all the time. This morning I was looking for a lunch bag size, brown bag. I asked myself the question and said I would look in the craft box in the garage. Sure enough...that's where I keep them. I also use the container as space available now. So helpful. I have read Decluttering at the Speed of Life and am reading your first book now. Thanks for all the insight!

My house looks neat, clean and tidy...until you open my three guest room closets! I've decluttered other area of my house, but have been putting off these closets because, while they are not quite Monica closets, they are overwhelming and I don't know where to start. Today I filled two plastic grocery bags full of trash and found several items to donate from one of the closets. It's a long way from done, but better than when I started. I think not feeling like I have to complete a whole closet makes the task of decluttering less overwhelming and more manageable. I keep repeating, "Not perfect, but better!"

I wanted to tell you that I introduced my husband to your method this weekend. We tackled our tool drawer in the kitchen together. Took about 30 minutes. He was confused at first about the wisdom of "take it there now," but in the end, he agreed that the method reduced anxiety about the process, and that the questions are a good framework for us to declutter together.

I have been going back looking at some of your old videos and I have to say you are my very favorite (declutterer)? You are like a festivus for the rest of us. those who aren't perfect and keep recluttering and don't put things where they are supposed to go. But your home has definitely come a long way which gives me hope. .. Just keep practicing what I am learning... Do those dishes every day, throw away those pens that don't write, 5 minute quick clean up, etc. Thanks, you are very inspiring. And I am making my home BETTER.

It sometimes seems like schools hire SLPs just to have access to their stuff. I typically have to bring all of my own supplies and books, bc schools rarely give related service providers the resources nor budgets to acquire appropriate materials. So all of the stuff she has in there? I have to store it in my 800 sq ft home. 😬😳

Hi Dana! I am a SLP as well and a goal this past year was to declutter my room at school. I just kept asking myself, "Where is the first place I would look for this?" and I put it there immediately. No more piles for this girl! It helped tremendously! I also used the container idea and threw away and recycled a bunch of stuff because I just didn't have the space. As to why the SLP in the video didn't put stuff away...it's because she was probably writing an IEP. The paperwork required is cuh-razy! Great job you two!

Your videos motivate me so much. I think I have finally found what works for me, better not perfect. I suffer from anxiety and depression and my house gets out of control often. I have been watching decluttering videos for years and trying to follow some of the methods are very overwhelming and daunting and I really don't cope well with the 'it gets worse before it gets better' stage, it really sets off my anxiety and I just lose motivation and feel like a failure. I spent around an hour yesterday just focusing on better and asking all the questions and following through with putting it away now and it made so much difference. I loved how I could constantly see the progress being made. Thankyou so much. P.S please make this one hour better into a series

I was away from home for a week and clicked on your channel for some motivation to pick up where I left off in my decluttering. This video is just what I needed to start getting back into the decluttering groove without the overwhelm. And I came home to a home that looked great (minus the library/office room with storage closet and boxes up the wall which is the next paper nightmare to be tamed), because of all of the work I did before I left. Thank you so much. I hope you do more of these one hour cleaning sessions. Thanks for editing it down to close to 15 minutes so I can grab the lesson without losing the other 45 minutes. I have about a 22-minute attention span. 💝

Oh, I love this, Dana! It was so helpful seeing you walk and talk through the process with someone who needed a little guidance. It reinforces the tips you've created and perfected. I hope you do more. You can come and help me!!!
