This is the original, the way it was intended to be heard. One of Steve's singles before he joined Lynyrd Skynyrd. He had an amazing voice and was an excellent guitar player. He could have given SRV a run for his money. In memory of Steve Gaines 9/14/1949--10/20/1977.

I'm....well, younger than 60 by a long shot, and I never got to see the pre-crash Skynyrd because I was too young. I can't even imagine how good that was, especially the '77 show with Steve! I mean, I saw them in '87 or thereabouts when Allen Collins came out in a wheelchair before the show (the poor, poor guy, how hard that must have been for him to do) and they were amazing even then. With Steve, Ronnie, Cassie and Allen still playing? Must have been amazing, you lucky devil!!!

Had he not been cut short I'm certain Steve would have become known as one of the greatest guitarist of the era. As a guitarist myself I can testify to his incredible diversity, he could play anything from jazz/swing, country chicken pickin', delta blues, Chicago blues, any slide style and of course good old Rock and Roll! And played it all with extraordinary technical ability. Then of course he was a master songwriter and could sing his ass off! He was definitely set to propel Skynyrd to the next level but unfortunately we only got an all too breif glimpse of what could have been with "Street Survivors". RIP Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant

The version of "T for Texas" from the 7/13/77 Asbury Park, NJ show absolutely smokes! Steve just kills it on the slide guitar, and the whole band was just super-tight. They were feelin' it. Steve Gaines was a tremendous talent. We just released a version of “One in the Sun” which I hope Steve would have liked. According to everyone that I know that knew him, like Teresa (his wife) and Artimus, he was a fine and sensitive man…someone that made the world a better place with a humility that we should emulate. “One in the Sun” is a masterpiece. It is one of the finest songs I’ve ever experienced.

You want to get really pissed off? I am 64 and live in Tulsa. Had a lady from Miami, 75 miles north until about a year and a half ago, I've conservatively been there100 times. You get off I-44 from either direction and you turn onto Steve Owens Blvd. Mickey Mantle is from Commerce, the towns practically touch and there isn't one fucking word anywhere in the town about Steve, Cassie , or the band. Makes me want to puke. Kiss my ass Miami - pronounced miama, ok!!!!! PS. They even had benefits there. excuse typos and where I posted it.

People often forget about and discount the talents from their own backyards. Steve was a humble guy and it seems to me that he is often overlooked. EVERYONE I know that knew him has nothing but great things to say - not only about his playing, but about his quality as a human being. If I lived in that town, I would pay respects and use the image of Steve as motivation for others. Steve Gaines was a person you'd want as your neighbor!

C moore Allen Collins and Steve Gaines gave an interview 6 days before the plane crash at Allen Collins home. In that interview Steve had nothing but bad things to say about Miami, Oklahoma. He called it a shit hole and wanted nothing to do with the place and spoke about how he loved Florida. You can find part of the interview online. I read it myself. Maybe that’s why Miami, Oklahoma doesn’t memorialize Steve and Cassie. He was an awesome guitarist but terrible at giving an interview.

It's not just his gorgeous and expressive guitar work that we missed out on, it's his amazing, blues-drenched voice and his massive unfulfilled future as a truly talented songwriter. my daughter and my grandkids and I just saw the band at Greensboro nc on 11/13/2021. the music lives on, I wonder what it would be like if the plane hadn't gone down. my daughter was born on 9/37/77, my wife had given her a bottle of milk when the radio announced that the plane had crashed .I would have liked to see just how great the music would have been if they had not been killed. RIP to the greatest band ever.

I'm 54 and I remember when Steve joined LS and I immediately heard what he was bringing to the table...I already loved their sound the other guitarists were awesome. But the stage presence was obvious. And when he played, I was awestruck. What I liked most, was that he did not try to steal thunder from the other two guys, who were absolutely great in their own right, but the second that Gaines was given some air time, I could hear a distinct difference in the guitar - and I knew he was a step ahead, but he was not there to take over or show off. Botyom line - that MAN was Top Shelf. Steve Gaines wasnt a "diamond in the rough", Steve was already a genuine diamond and he sparkled with sheer brilliance - the 'total package' for sure. Then he was gone...and I was like ..what the F%#&? 42 years later I am still saying wtf...?

This song, as well as all the songs from the self-titled album, "Steve Gaines," were recorded before Steve was hired by LS. All of those songs were recorded at Leon Russell's Church Studios in Tulsa and Capricorn Studios in Macon, by Steve's band Crawdad. At the time, the songs were intended to be released under the band's name. None of the members of LS played on the album, although when the album was released posthumously, MCA in their wisdom, put a photo of LS on the cover. Aside from the front cover shot of Steve, no photo of the Crawdad band was included anywhere, however, the album credits do list the musicians and the songs credits reveal that while most of the songs were written and sung by Steve, a couple of the songs were co-written by Steve and fellow guitarist John Moss and drummer Ronnie Brooks. John wrote and sang one song, and he and Steve split vocal duties on another. A couple of the songs are covers. Crawdad was an incredible band, probably more akin to the Allman Brothers and Little Feat than LS, and it's a shame that those guys never got the credit they were due for their work on the wonderful songs that they recorded for this album. It's also a shame that they never had a chance to record many of the other songs that were in their repertoire. And here's the real kicker- none of those guys ever got paid for their contributions to the album.

I watched an interview with Rossington about Cassie Gaines wanting skynard to let her brother sit in on a show. His band, Crawdad, was playing at the local Holiday Inn. Rossington and the band admittedly dismissed the idea. She said she had a record of his songs and she encouraged the band to give it a listen. They never did. Stevie shows up with a guitar as they are warming up for the show. They give him a quick show of what songs he would sit in on and they were kind of put off that he didn't really seem to pay attention, or strap up his guitar to start fingering out the songs. They were like, " oh, this aint gonna be good. He's gonna lay an egg when he gets on stage. Needless to say, he blew them away. By the end of the night, Stevie was telling his old band, "goodbye", and he was on a tour bus with a suitcase and a guitar.

First time I heard this but not a surprise. I knew he could sing, play and compose. In the late 60's he did some variations of the Band and Neal Young that I thought were better than the originals. His guitar riffs were up there in a class with Hendrix. Still say he is one of the top three guitarist I have ever seen. I am glad your legacy still lives in your music and it is even more emotional knowing you left us too soon.

This man was set to take over the world. I do believe he would have outgrown Skynyrd, and I mean that with the upmost respect to Skynyrd. He was made to be a leader, and he liked writing a lot of stuff that didn’t really fit Lynyrd Skynyrds catalog. That said, his role with the band would have been a major stepping stone in his career that he needed. Such a damn shame.

I think Steve joining Skynyrd was an important step, but at the same time it's the reason he died. I mean... he was AWESOME guitarist, and he was finally getting worldwide recognition. Unfortunately, all other the bands were flying hundreds of times, but the Skynyrd's one had to be the one to fall. Maybe they really chose the worst flight company possible...
