What a great refurbishment of the Iron Rangers.The Vibram soles/heels look wonderful,and the internal work on the soles I'm sure will probably keep them going for another decade or more ! It is so good to see an experienced cobbler being able to do all of the work himself,and having all of the equipment to hand.Sadly in my part of the UK (Sussex) many cobblers went out of business during the pandemic and it is difficult to get shoes/boots so professionally fixed.A really interesting video.

Love the iron rangers, they could definitely be improved with leather midsole and heel stacks as shown here but then instead of a $350 boot you’d have a $450 boot. These did turn out great though.!

Great work and great content - the camera work, production and tunes are great! Could you have nailed/screwed the heel? How do you decide to do that or not? The leather midsole looks so much better. Should come from the factory with it on already I reckon.

I really like that you added a midsole. A quality one at that too, I don't recall ever seeing JR leather used for a midsole before! It's always bothered me that Redwing doesn't put a midsole on the Iron Ranger.

as far as i can tell, this is not a JR sole. also, JR does not exist anymore, we will not see those soles a lot in the future...

Yeah it wasn't a JR sole but it was a German Oak Bark tanned one, JR has been bought over by Kilger Leather, same recipe, same technique, new soles are starting to make their way round the world now, and apparently they are just as good, youl see more of em popping up.

I couldn't agree more. I've always been a Red Wing nitrile cork sole over vibram sole guy...mostly because the vibram sole just felt "too thin"/like something was missing. If Red Wing had gone with the midsole like this...I likely wouldn't hold this opinion. Nice video of your great looking work on these Iron Rangers!

@@gregd8098yea I miss the old smooth cork soles. They were outstanding, still got an older pair of 8114’s with the cork sole, love them. The mini lug vibram soles would definitely fair better with a leather midsole

Excellent breakdown of your craftmanship. I noticed you didn't remove all the cork before gluing the gemming back. Is it necessary to remove all the cork and start fresh, or can you leave some left in areas that arent in your way of the glue?

Evidently Redwing does not care about the cobblers who recraft their boots or else they would fix the problem of the gemming coming loose from the insole. No matter, you handled it quite easily. See you on the next video.

For real, 2 out of my 3 pairs of Red Wings have this problem, the 3rd one is the newest pair so I don’t doubt i’ll get that problem too

They don't want them repaired or rebuilt. Redwing wants you to buy new boots. Why would they make it easy?

I love to see a cobbler and shoemaker on top of their craft doing great work like JK boots staff. It's so clear how well made and designed those boots are and when I see how much better made they are and how good the cobblers there do their jobs it seems that they are better value than the redwings and nearly every other boot under £500. They're so strong, and a resole is $200 and they can rebuild totally worn out boots but they do last ages.

My only guess would be because they expect us red wing consumers to send it back to redwing to be resoled, and then just resoled without worrying about the giming, because realistically none of us really knew what these boots looked like before cobblers started tearing them apart?

I hurt my knee in red wing iron ranger, never had such problems. Zero amortization… is really hurtful, still treating my knee and have to beware of good insoles. That is a real headache. The only pair that I have that made really suffer.

Can the cobbler use a Blake Stitch to secure the gemming … so as to eliminate the need to completely remove and repair the footbed?

Nice work! Is there any way to stitch down the gemming now? Or would you have to tear down the whole boot to do that? Which the customer may not want to pay for all that.

You would think that RW by now would have fixed/solved this major flaw by now!!!??? But brand loyalty/hype is most likely the reason they haven't bothered to simply stitch that gemming down, but I wonder why CG after speaking about this didn't stitch it down???!!!
