That was the point of this part of the movie. Curtis stole Effie's song and made it more dancable. He took out all of the soul because he didn't want her to have a comeback and he knew her version was good. But that was acting. It wasn't Beyonce or Jennifer Hudson. It was Deena Jones and Effie White.

i'm probably late to the dream girls analytical discussions, but i just noticed the story the changed lyrics tell. in effie/C.C.'s version, it's "...you really don't have the time...you've got one night only..." but deena/curtis's version goes ..."I really don't have the time... I've got one night only..." which is SUCH a perfect change. effie and c.c. (in the song pov) are resigned to being taken advantage of or at least left behind when they're no longer convenient. curtis's disco version is different because curtis is not a man women leave--he's always the one leaving. the tone is also way too cheeky and upbeat to be a song about being jilted in love. so the change works really well for deena's performance. anyway, i love dream girls

Earlier when we heard the two versions of 'Cadillac Car', it was no contest at all which one was better because it was clearly the original and the remake had next to nothing to it except decent harmonies. When it comes to 'One Night Only', it's different because while the original is clearly fantastic, this remake is at least close to its awesomeness.

Oh here's another eerie fact. Listen has been one of the most popular Audition Songs in Europe. A Young Lady named clarissa sang it on Holland's Got Talent but she didn't know it was from Dreamgirls. Around 2008 a Young Lady from the UK sang "Listen" on The X Factor UK whose name is Alexandra Burke. Her Mother wasin Soul To Soul (Back To Life). The Two Ladies who heard her sing were Cheryl Ann Tweedy and Kimberly Walsh of Girls Aloud who were blown away and Alexandra would later win. Fatima Robinson who did the Choreography would later work with Cheryl when she did her First Solo Concert.

In the late 1990's there was an up an coming UK Girlband called Girlthing (The Proteges Of Simon Cowell), who were touted to be the next big thing after The Spice Girls. It didn't happen and their Song "Pure & Simple" went to another Group called Hear'Say. They were to put in mildly crushed and they never made it.

The Original Effie Jennifer Holliday, Karla Mosley (who would later play Maya on The Bold & The Beautiful) and Sharon Leal who played Dahlia Crede as well as Yvonna Kopacz-Wright (who played Dr. Mel Boudreau).
