Patrick Cappiello, the award-winning wine director at Rebelle in New York City, regularly drinks some of the best wines in the world, but we wanted him to drink like us everyday folk. So we went to the supermarket to find wines you can easily get across the country for under $15-Robert Mondavi, Coppola, Charles Shaw, Yellowtail and Kendall Jackson-and had him do a blind taste test. Some were absolutely awful, but some, to his surprise, were actually good. Check out the video to see which wines are a great value the next time you’re at the grocery store and which ones fail miserably.

I'm a newbie to wine. Recently I tried William Hill chardonnay and it was terrible. Couldn't drink the whole glass if I had to. Are there better chardonnays out there? Does it go better with food? Or is Chardonnay one of those "you either like it or you don't" things? As a point of reference, my favorite wines so far are sweet whites I discovered recently while in the Smokies.

College reminds me of the sweet merlot and the very nice brut (Fork and spoon; doesn't seem obtainable at a liquor store) that were on offer at our local bar. That and the cask wine we used to play goon of fortune, but I believe that came slightly after college. Beer was obviously more indicative of the times, but that's less because of preference and more because of the company I kept (engineering college, so few girls) and because of the poor value you get when ordering a wine at a bar. Wine is not so expensive or sold in such volume that you can't buy a bottle to try a bottle. Actually now that I think about it, I probably started drinking wine with my father durinng college. So throw in Wolf Blass red sauvignon blanc too. Not bad.

John Bainbridge only if you are actually looking for a wine to drink while young. Chardonnay can age very well with the added tannins and often times developes the more ripe yellow fruit aromas over time with hints of honey and such. Treat yourself a good aged burgundy wine and you'll see what I mean.

Not really. The “regular consumer” has been habituated to these Frankenwines. The sad thing is that 3 out of five of these brands carry the names that used to make legitimately fine wine wine, but sold out to chase a mass market that they could have educated to appreciate genuine expressions of grape varieties. Instead they manipulate in the lab....

"Professional wine tasting" is junk science. Once you hit the $30 USD price point, there is no difference between those wines and wines that cost $1000+. You are only paying for bragging rights, to say how much your bottle of wine cost. Thats it. Some of the best wines you will ever try reside in the $14-25 range.

KJ makes all their Chardonnay in oak barrels, so definitely not flavored, but okay.
@huggiebigs
@huggiebigs 6 жыл бұрын
I find that hard to believe. To produce wine on the global scale that KJ does and have a uniform profile with every single vintage takes some serious manipulation. You're getting tons of additives, powders, concentrates, etc. Franken-wine if you will. A massive number of barrels would have to be in play to produce the millions of cases that go out each year. And even if it is the case, the wines are so heavily "oaked" that it becomes the dominant flavor profile, which is what Patrick is referencing when he says "flavored".
