We had a dog crap on the floor. My Husband made the dog watch as he picked it up with a plastic bag. Then he took poop and pup outside and Dad dumped the poo on the ground. The dog not only didn’t poo in the house anymore,he didn’t poo in the yard. He went in the woods, like the pope. True gentleman. He did it for 15 years. Shout Out to Scruffy!

Potty training 101- if you can't see the dog, you are in the wrong. Keep eyes on pup at all times!! They have small bladders and cannot hold it long. I would keep mine from free range water until potty trained, I would give drinks throughout the day, now I know within 10 min, we need to go outside to go potty. Take treats (not cheap ones, they cause stomach issues, not something you need while potty training!) Don't let them play, keep saying, "go potty, as soon as they do, "good puppy!!! Treat, pick up, back in the house. Now they are understanding the word "potty" No puppy pads! No food or water period after a certain time every evening, go out before bed No matter what time they last ate or drank. Pups sleep alot, as soon as they wake up, you say "let's go potty" out you go. Bottom line. Eyes on puppy ALL the time, they will catch on, but they can't learn if you aren't teaching!

Or perhaps don’t trap your dogs inside a tiny little house😂😂 y’all are worse than any other type of dog owner. I rather see a dog get kicked once a day than be trapped inside a house all day going for two walks a day😂😂 nah my dog is much happier than your dog could ever be, and he was “abused” for the training process… nowadays he could take a cane corso to the ground like it’s nothing. I train dogs to be the best they can be, so they are happy. You train dogs to follow your command than trap them inside a house all day… yea you shouldn’t be talking about what a dog likes and doesn’t like when you literally have zero clue yourself. You couldn’t prove me wrong I know for a fact any dog you own is miserable compared to mine

Really I'm not say shoving a dog's nose it is good. I'm saying that the 3 to 5 seconds really!!!! Dumb not base in reality. ok dog's wouldn't be able to hold a grudges at all. Alright, first time owner and honestly in my family none of us ever had any idea on how to train a dog, so sorry if I'm saying something wrong (we found him thrown away next to the garbage bin when he was like couple weeks old, we had good intentions but no know-how, we just knew we couldn't leave him there). So, yeah, he used to pee and poo in the house, my mom yelled at him a lot and he was very sad about it. So what I did was take a napkin, dip it into the puddle, and leave it outside in the garden. Then I bought him there and let him sniff the napkin a couple times throughout the day, telling him that *that* was ok, and whenever he peed in that area I would pet him. This was my poor illiterate man's way of showing that he had an area to do his things and it was ok, while doing it in the house was not. Don't know if it was a fluke or something, but it worked almost immediately. 😂

Crate training helped me with potty training a lot. My puppy never had major issues with doing his stinky business on the training pad, but once he started to spend nights in crate he understood the concept of holding it. 1.5 weeks with crate and I removed pads - no incidents for 2 months!

I've always wondered if that method of training actually sabotages the training by associating going to the bathroom with punishment, therefore causing the dog to not want to go out and use it in fear of said punishment, ultimately leading to it releasing in the house when it can't hold it anymore. More so in the beginning phases with younger pups
@AmericanStandardK9

GOOD points! It certainly undermines their trust, yes, especially as young puppies, to have their "loving owners" dunk their little nose into smelly business...
@hellbind
@hellbind Жыл бұрын
@@AmericanStandardK9 Yeah, I don't think people realize how traumatizing certain actions can be on animals, especially dogs with their almost unrequited love; we think that because dogs are animals and that certain methods have been tried and "true", that it's THE method to apply despite the obvious downsides of mashing the face of a young, defenseless animal companion that you acquired's face into its own waste. I'm no bleeding heart, but I know all it leads to is a pup that can't stop loving you and needs you but also is timid of what you MAY do now that it knows you have the propensity. That's gotta be exhausting for them, because I don't know how long their attention spans are but they definitely seem to remember mistreatment and abuse for a lifetime.

I would like to learn where that short term memory concept comes from. My dog won't go say hi when he does something wrong, chewing shoes, stealing food from the counter, when we are out, and would wait in a corner ears low looking away until we make contact, he definitely knows he did something wrong. He never had issues with potty training, and now he does not chew on shoes anymore and only goes for food if we make it too easy/tempting than it is our fault.

Thank you for putting this info out there for folks. It may save many a hapless pup. Another thing that damages your relationship with your dog: yelling at or disciplining him/her when you come home to find your dog has gotten into the garbage. All s/he knows is you came home and yelled at or hit him/her. The dog has *no* idea why you're upset, or why you're dragging them through the trash strewn about the room. Some folks might argue, "oh yes he does, that's why he looks guilty." But your dog isn't looking guilty, he's looking supplicative. His alpha is raging so he's cowering. From your dog's point of view, once you left, the trash (your rejects) it was fair game. In the wild, pack members have to wait to eat until the alpha is done. But once the alpha walks away from the food, it's fair game for the other members, in rank order. You leaving the house signals to your dog that the yummy smelling stuff in the trash is now fair game for him. So he finally gets to partake. Then he is overjoyed when his alpha returns, only to be yelled or swatted - and for no reason the dog can figure out. Trash everywhere isn't fun, but punishing your dog after the fact won't get you what you want, because the dog won't connect your anger to his previous action. It will only damage your dog's trust in you and what he will learn is to fear your return home, because sometimes you start raging after walking in the door. So please don't do it. If you don't want your dog getting into the trash when you leave the house, put it in another room and close the door. Another tip: I sometimes spray any breakfast dishes left in the sink, and my trash can, lightly with Lysol on my way out the door and that is enough to put my dog off of them. One last tip: when angry at your dog, please don't call him over to you then pumish him. From the dog's perspective he came, even though he was afraid of your angry disposition, and then you assaulted him (either verbally or physically). In effect, you punished your dog *for coming to you as directed.* So what can you do? Go to your dog instead. Walk over to wherever s/he is. Don't ever punish your dog for coming when you call, unless you want your dog to learn to stop coming when you call. Canine culture, it's a whole different world, isn't it? Good luck!

I 100% agree that shoving the nose in their poop or pee isn't doing any good. They're puppies (or just dogs who dont know better) and they simply will not understand and will only learn to fear you. HOWEVER. I completely disagree on the memory thing. 99 times out of 100 i can walk into my house and my dog is thrilled to see me, and I'm thrilled to see him too. But every once in a while, I'll come home, excited as usual to see my buddy, and he acts GUILTY as hell. As soon as i see that behavior I start looking for something out of place and i usually find something right away. THEY. KNOW. Especially if they're older. Puppies will probably not understand they've done anything wrong at all. But a mature dog that is well established in their home will absolutely present guilty behavior, completely unprompted by anything I have done in that moment. I hear trainers say this all the time and it drives me absolutely crazy.

You know man thank you for the good advice all the time. I trained my pups by picking them. Up and take them outside every 2 hours and take a week vacation. 5 to 7 days they are potty trained. 30 days to let them near even being on the bed or a room.

Training my dogs to not poop or pee in the house was the hardest thing, i had to watch them all the time to understand first their body language of when they were going to poop. Then i remember i had to work the "No" fast si they didn't poop or pee again in the same place. And teaching them to going into the garden was a little laborious because i remember carrying grass in a little Bag so they smelled the grass every time they did poop. When they grew a little themselves started searching the grass to know thats where they were allowed to poop

Whenever my dog has an accident, whether it's been 3 minutes or 3 hours, if we find it and say "what is this?" And "smell" he gets nervous and goes to his kennel. He knows when he did bad, and it's always helpful to find out if it's his or not!

I just recently got a puppy and I am in for 1 hell of a lesson. I already knew not to do this and I just try my hardest to take her out as much a possible, or when I see her body language change. I'm use to having cats hahaha a dog is a whole other level of responsibility and I thank you for videos like these. I've been watching your videos far before I gotten my puppy and learned a lot. I hope I do well and train my dog well

I have never heard of people doing that who rubs their dogs face in their own poop but my mom used to do to potty train. The puppies is when they would make a mess in the house because we were always watching them when they were out so the second they started we would pick them up and put them outside and say out and then it always worked.

I don’t rub their face on their poop or pee I just tell them “ Aye you don’t poop there “ (not yelling) I do that 3 times & after the third time they know where to poop & pee at & those are for my inside dogs, my big dogs they outside 24/7 & they automatically poop in the corner idk why I never taught them that

because most animals do Not 'go' near where they eat or sleep.. they naturally want to 'go' outside, or somewhere away from where they live..!

How do I retrain an adult dog? Backstory: we got a Treeing Walker Coonhound from the pound. Not much is known about her, except that she’s approximately 2 yrs old. We suspect she was abused. She’s very timid. She’s destructive though, and goes potty all over the house-including my beds (thankfully I have protective covering). I have bare floors, I had rugs at the entryways but she destroyed them going to the bathroom on them. I have another rescue, he’s a Cane Corso, he likes to go out frequently, and I try to get them to go out together. He’s VERY house trained. I’ve been trying to work with her, but I’m at a loss. She is in her kennel when we’re not home, but she goes potty anywhere whenever she wants 😑

This is why I'd never get a rescue. I love dogs, but don't trust, or love, humans. There is no telling what abuse the dog has been subjected to and I don't have the time, or patience to fix a broken dog. Many who get rescues, including my own sister, shouldn't even own a dog and even less a rescue. Rescue dogs are for very experienced owners with loads of time.

I've lived around dogs my whole life, potty training is a pain in the butt. The trick in my experience is to figure out what times they want to poop and do your best to get them outside before the time they usually go, given time they'll associate taking a leak with the outdoors. Aversive training doesn't work, especially for a dog young enough to need potty training.

My mom used to do that to my dog when I was a teenager. I always felt so bad for the dog and my mom would say she was just training it. Now I'm an adult and I really want a dog so I'm learning how to train one the right way.

100% I was looking after a dog one time, and I got back late due to work, and she had needed a poop. The look of fear and shame on her face was heartbreaking. I just said "oh baby, it's not your fault, it's mine. You've done nothing wrong. Good girl". I gave her a stroke, gave her a treat and let her out. She licked me. Another time I was stroking her head and I said "I love you" and she gently held my wrist in her teeth, then just let go. And we both knew that it was trust both ways. I've never told anybody that, before. I think if you shove your dog's face in poop, you need to be severely punished. Never abuse animals. Ever

Had an alsatian cross rottweiler that was challenging for dominance, door wide open, over 2 years old and perfectly aware of what he should have been doing, walked over to the fridge stared my mum right in the eye and pissed up the fridge. He got thrown in it, and that was the end of that. Completely agree with what he's saying tho, it's only because it was immediate that it worked
