Tsukki’s dislike for Hinata makes so much sense when you realise that the little giant was playing on the team at the same time his brother wasn’t. It’s like deja vu

so only the regulars and bench were allowed to be in the play area so tsuki's brother didnt make regular spot or bench. He technically was "on the team" just not good enough to be a starter or bench.

The really sad part is that Tsukki's brother is actually a very good player, being the ace of a middle school team and shown when he's able to receive the ball straight into the basketball hoop. The Karasuno roster at that time was just so deep that even someone as skilled and passionate as him was relegated to not even suiting up during games.

When Tsuki's older brother was playing for Karasuno, it was the team's strongest time. Grandpa Coach Ukai was coaching, the Little Giant was in the team, Karasuno was considered a powerhouse team in the prefecture, and they were able to reach Nationals. Because of these things, a lot of strong volleyball players were playing in the team or wanting to join the team. Just like any powerhouse school, not every player can play on the court. There are only 6 players on the court at any time and a few more substitute players are allowed courtside. Getting a regular position is very competitive. Tsuki's older brother was the ace player in his middle school team, but in Karasuno, he may not have been strong enough to be a regular player. He was still a team member but was probably relegated to other club responsibilities like cheering and support roles. When Tsuki kept asking his older brother what his current position on the team was, Tsuki's older brother lied about it because he probably believed that if he worked hard enough, he might really climb the ranks and eventually be a regular player soon. He also didn't want to lose Tsuki's admiration for him. Over time, Karasuno became weaker and less competitive. Fewer talented students joined the team, and the current player roster is smaller. In a way, that may be an advantage for our current team members, since more players can now have their opportunities to play on the court. Even now, Karasuno only has 2 setters (Kageyama and Suga), but Suga gets very little time on the court. Imagine, having 3 or more players compete for the same position before. As for Tsuki, I think his choice to not give his best for the volleyball team at the start was a form of self-preservation. He idolized and loved his brother so much, but he saw what happened when his brother gave his all for the volleyball team and still failed at it. His brother worked so hard and was not lacking in passion, but he was heartbroken and devastated when his dream to be the team's ace failed. I think Tsuki kept telling himself that he will not give his all, so that if he fails, he will not feel the same frustration. Deep in his heart though, he still loves volleyball and admires his older brother, after all, he went to Karasuno and joined the volleyball team. He could've enrolled in another school (he is very academically smart) or could've joined any other club (he is tall), but he still chose to join the Karasuno volleyball team. Yamaguchi has always said that Tsuki would not have done anything he didn't really want to do. :)

About the Japanese joke on 9:47, Tsuki constantly says that volleyball is "just a club". In the Japanese language, they say that phrase with the sounds "takaga bukatsu". Bokuto (Fukurodani's white-tipped haired guy) jokes that that phrase sounds like a normal Japanese person's name. Kuroo (Nekoma's black spiky haired guy) joins in by saying "yeah, just like Tada Nobukatsu (a normal Japanese person's name)". ^_^

S2, ep 8 resonates with me in so many ways. A lot of people, rightfully so, view this episode from Tsukki's perspective. It's always hard when the person you look up to isn't everything they've made themselves to be. I view it from Akiteru's perspective as well. I got cut my sophomore year from the volleyball team, while my younger sibling (who was already far better) made her junior high team. I felt dejected, and I honestly felt uncool in my sister's eyes. I ended up learning how to score volleyball matches to help out her team. The next two years, I was allowed to practice, but I became a manager of the varsity team. When my sister said she was proud of me, it made all of that pain worth it. Part of me can understand how Akiteru wanted to keep up appearances, but I feel for Kei a lot because the lie affected him so much in his own volleyball journey. That's why I see Bokuto and Kuroo as visionary heroes to Akiteru's illusionary hero.

You once asked while pondering about Hinata's fixation on the Little Giant, if you'd see any "idolization" in the series, and how it may not be a good thing to put someone in a pedestal. I think Tsukki and his brother's story counts as one. And it's something every kid has to go through? As very young kids, we all thought our parents or older siblings can do anything; like they're superheroes. The moment you realize that they make mistakes might be memorable for many reasons. If it's a traumatic event, it could affect the "idea" of what you want to be when you're older. In Tsukki's case, how much he idolized his brother turned into how much he didn't want to be like his brother, and go through what his brother did. He would rather not try than to try, fail and self-destruct from the pressure. Btw, i remember the moment my mom stopped looking like a superhero in my eyes. It was when she couldn't answer my math homework that I needed help with hahahaha It's also funny, even though it's not a Japanese saying: "Don't shoot for the stars, shoot for the moon" so that you won't be disappointed? Tsukki IS the moon, but he won't even shoot for the moon lol.

Tsukki’s brother is in the club so he practice with others everyday but when it comes to the match, there is a limit on the number of people who can be a regular and get in the bench. There were too many club members at this period in Karasuno since they were a popular powerhouse

Honestly Tsukki is my least favourite character however he's the character I actually relate to the most and I find myself the most similar to. The fact that I don't like him is likely due to my own issues with myself rather than Tsukki himself 😅 I actually understand everything he goes through. The excitement of looking up to someone and watching someone be passionate and giving their all and it still not being enough. The lack of trying due to the complacency and accepting you'll never be the best resulting in wasting the talents you have been given because you believe even if you try you'll fail and it will hurt less if you don't put your all in but it's all just a front from fear failure.

YZ I agree with u about Tsukki. He did become one of my fave but Oikawa is always first 😂 I think season 2 is my fav season. I have a shallow ranking of all the seasons and a legit one but season 2 ranks at the top of both. I’m so glad yall love the music in season 2 too!!
