Aside from the rules in many kickboxing organizations severely limiting how much time you can spend in clinch (as well as what, and how many things you can do within that clinch time), many organizations also limit or completely ban things like sweeps, trips, shoving, and downward elbows; some rule sets will even ban elbows of all forms. These considerable differences in rules isn't the only factor to the stylistic differences between the two similar sports, it's also the background of the fighters themselves. A huge number of kickboxers around the world come from a non-Muay Thai background (often Karate). It's important to note that kickboxing itself was partially created as a Japanese reaction to Muay Thai kicking the crap out of Karatekas. Kickboxing was principally developed in Japan, in the 1970s (then exported to the Netherlands, etc), blending ideas from Karate, Muay Thai, and boxing into a well-rounded striking hybrid art. I'd strongly recommend looking into Fujiwara Toshio, as he's one of the pioneers of this evolution, and was one of the first foreigners who figured out how to defeat Nak Muay. However, this would come full circle in the 21st century, as Nak Muay are now dominant forces in kickboxing as well. It's an exciting time for martial sports! I hope that helped!

Well yes and also the clinch wins in a street fight. I have seen it over and over again in the streets of America against boxing. Were kick boxing gets beat by boxing it's not good in the streets. I know I jumped out of answering your question but it's true. Kick boxers divide their time between boxing and kicking so a boxer beats them in close were it always ends up in the street because he practices this style more. But for some reason in the ring Muay Thai guys can just kick and punch and some how still beat the boxer if they don't close in and be macho and try to box then they get beat. I see it all the time and I scream STAY AWAY don't box when they do they get beat when they do not they win even if they kick only for some reason. I say how can they do it and not the kick boxer. It's because of the mechanics of the Thai boxing kicks and clinching it's just unbeatable any element of the style is unbeatable at stand up fighting. Even the Gracie's applaud the style and grapplers know to be careful around Thai boxers. Kick boxing doesn't work against it except for some champs who get lucky and eventually get knocked out by a Thai unless they dodge the champs or fight one and get lucky and then dodge the rest and if they win they used Muay Thai a little and this is extremely rare and they talk about this Victory for a hundred years. Everyone gets it but the Europeans and some people here who just continue to get knocked out in the streets. The clinch is excellent in the streets it takes them out right away the style is magnificent and everyone in these free fights knows it. They don't need to worry about running into an elbows!when letting hands go. Elbows are the tools used mostly against punchers.

Besides restrictions on elbows, clinch and sweeping there's also a large difference between the traditional Thai style scoring and modern kickboxing. Entertainment Muay Thai shows Muay Thai under scoring standards more similar to Western or Japanese priorities.
