German style, or "closet rod", jousting... very dangerous form. People ended up using more breakable lances to avoid hits like that in the French style: which has a smaller target shield on the jouster called an ecranche that must be struck and also break the lance in order for a point to be scored. The lance I've seen for the people that do French are made of metal but the tip (~3 ft or so) is made of spiral-cut pinewood, which still takes 800+lbs of pressure in order to break but the breakage doesn't become sharp to the point of being a danger to the animals or ground crew and the knights don't get injured too quickly in the event.
