I'm actually one of those artists who doesn't mind/likes to be compared to other media, because it makes me happy to know that other people associate my art with something positive that brings them joy. But I can also see your perspective and it's still valid if people dislike having their art compared to someone else's. Just like you said, we all get our inspirations from somewhere and there's nothing wrong with getting inspired by something or someone else. But what really riles me up is when people create a very vague character/concept and then go around calling everyone an art thief if they created something that is even remotely similar. I've had this happen to me once many years ago when someone I didn't even know and have never interacted with before accused me of stealing their AU... because both of our AU's featured a character with a heart theme in their design. So yeah. Totally valid and not completely bonkers claim there -_-

i have gotten passive aggressive comments about my art being inspired by tearzah, even on one of my video's someone had gotten upset at me because i had the tool and layers on the right bc im right handed they told me i was "copying teaz layout" even when it came to my old name i got shit for it ( though it wasnt aggressive it still hurt) so its just so annoying

augh god I felt this so hard. i've dropped so many of my OCs because they got compared to existing characters when I was younger, though thankfully i've never really had it happen to my actual style [ though if I had more reach, i wouldn't be surprised if i did get compared to some of my inspos. ] though I can imagine how annoying and demotivating it is. especially when you TELL them it upsets you, you don't like it, and it feels like an insult; and they insist on comparing it anyways, deflecting any time you tell them not to with "but I mean it in a good way!" i don't care, i told you i took it in a bad way and don't like it. it's not hard to just... Not do it, y'know ? the speed paint for this looks awesome by the way, I really love how you colour eyebags !

I've seen a lot a smaller creators being accused of coping other bigger creators because of the inspiration they take from them, and when people see similar aspects they go feral and try to think of everything they can to compare it to. It's so exhausting to have to deal with and to see (-"-;)

This is my first time on your channel and I just wanna say that I like how you put messages in the speedpaint like the "i hate backgrounds fr fr" And also I completely agree with everything you said in the video, it can definitely be disheartening to be compared to other artists even if they mean it as a complient

I can relate to the feeling of being discouraged by comparison, it made me feel like an imposter and less valuable.

Yeah i am a different case i just like an artist vibe and personality, i don't really go and say "hey this work reminds me of so and so" cause i mostly like the vibe with the work they put into of each process, it's cause i don't see comparisons in people's art at all i never had, honestly i don't think i ever will.

I feel this so much! Cause, My art has been compared to Anime, Which yeah, isn't bad cause i am inspired a lot by it, But it's hard to enjoy feeling happy about it being compared to it cause it does feel degrading in a way because it's not considered unique or interesting. That could be my mindset cause i want to have my art become more better and improve, Hell, rn I'm working to give my Oc's a more distinct face shape for each of them! Though, I want to be nice cause it's adults to mostly my parents or such that say it looks like that and they usually might mean Animated/Animation style, But it feels so odd to just say Anime instead of Animated-

Oh man I feel this. I've only had my art compared to anyone specific once but it wasn't a good feeling at all. Art is such a personal thing, comparing someone's work to something else feel like stripping the personal meaning it has. as someone who has made their artist by using way, way, way, way, way, to many artists art styles, who has basically an artstyle like a jigsaw puzzle but with a lot more unique qualities, i am surprised i do not get compared a lot, and glad too. i guess the only time i got compared was when i was younger and a friend of my pointed out it looks like anime, i didn't like it an had a fit she said that, in my defensive i was technically right but i did overreacted though i was a child, if i was compared today with anime i would definitely agree and because of the sheer amount of inspirations I've completely forgot them..

Oh fock, I'm sorry. I once commented on one of your drawings on DA about how the it was very similar to one of dreamalgia's drawings. I did it out of genuine curiosity if you had subconsciously got inspired by it or if you were actively using dreamalgia's image as inspiration. Again I'm so sorry, and thank you for responding to my comment back then I know getting compared to other artists is annoying but that time it must have slipped my autism-ridden brain lol I'll do better next time Hope to see more art from you soon! 🩷

This is not exactly the same but similar. I was hanging out with some friends and acquaintances just chatting whatever, I was sitting and doing some sketching. One dude looks over my shoulder and is like: "Oh you draw anime??" I replied "oh, no lol, my art isn't anime (context: my art is more cartoony inspired, semi realistic proportions, if you were an artist you'd be able to tell its a distinct style and not anime but some people just see cartoony art with larger eyes and think its anime- which is fine) He says "yeah it is, your art is anime. I reply "Haha no its uh not, it may be slightly inspired by anime but its not anime, I have my own style. He then proceeds to explain to me why my art is anime (he is not an artist) and I'm just like look dude- my art is my art its not anime, seriously please stop telling me what MY art is or isn't.

The closest I've come to getting this type of comment is being told my work reminds people of fairytales (also my main inspo) , something far more conceptual and subculture like than being compared to another person or IPs style. I've never felt this but it does sound extremely frustrating. I'm not sure if being compared to something more conceptual like a subculture would be better or the same for you though haha. I mean, I imagine that I'm not the only one who thinks of a conceptual comparison as better than a direct comparison to an IP or another artist. It might be just as annoying for a lot of people to have conceptual/subculture comparsions made idk. I'm not every person but something less concrete than *insert artist* like "gothic" or "fairytale" does sound a bit nicer. Maybe I'm just being weird and misunderstood a tiny bit of what you said.

Personally, I haven’t received these kind of comments . But I understand why this could suck, but another point is this could in a way affect their income and views.Like if you comment “ Oh this persons art is like that persons… etc.” If you spread that info out ,no one will want to see the artist cuz” It reminds them of something else”. And that’s kind of comments, could effect their income. And that’s fuck up.

Ngl. This might be stupid. But when I spend a LOT of time working on something that I think holds a lot of important and fundamental skills. And someone says "Awww, it's so cute!" That feels sooooo insulting to me. Saying something is cute when described to my work, feels like they are just idk... It makes me feel lesser. ._.

Though be fair people can’t read mind. I think wend most people are comparing is mostly because want to learn about art work.

And then there's the people who wine about not having a drawing tablet and saying, "Your art is only good because you have a drawing tablet and pc, you don't have to use your fingers to draw on a phone like I do-" Dude, I used to use my fingers too! Even before that I drew on paper, and furthermore, it wasn't all peaches and rainbows transferring to digital art! It took my 5 years to learn how to use the program and a year to learn how to use my tablet and how pen pressure works. It was pain and I can remember all the times I cried during my art journey! Your art won't be any better if you had a tablet or fancy utensils! It's only with studying, passion, and patients (+ hard work and elbow grease) you can achieve what you want for your art or what you want to do. If you keep complaining or comparing, you'll just be in an endless pit of apathy with your art/pieces.

Personally I don't mind comparison like these often, as long as they are respectful towards both parties. It can give me an opportunity to discover new artist that may or may not share similarities with my esthetic. "Hey I love your style! It really reminds me of [insert artist I've never heard before]!" and I can discover their work from there. I especially like it if they do end up managing to guess one of my key insperation, which I could info dump about. But yah, I do see how it could be annoying, I've gotten annoyed about it before. "Yah, your art style is anime based." It's like anime/ manga art style = big eyes to non illustrators, and it annoys the fuck out of me. Like the closest manga artist I'm inspired by is Junji Ito and a little bit of mha. I tend to not give non artist people the benefit of the doubt when they refer to illustrations as anime due to how it's perceived by the majority (my experience). That being cute, not taken seriously, uwu, kids, etc. So as a Horror artist, being told that my art looks like anime, isn't quite the most positive response to me, especially since most people don't associate anime with horror. So despite intentions, I'll be stuck in a limbo of "wtf do you mean by that?". Plus I don't think my style even remotely matches what you'd think of as "anime style", so it can be a bit bizarre and out of place to receive a comment like that... you have no idea how often I've gotten this comment from people irl. They just describe me as "oh, they draw like anime style art." Like waw, thanks for severely inaccurately describing my art to someone. Sorry for the messy rant, I forgot how annoying this specific comparison is for me lol.

omg youre such a ripoff of rottika, your art looks exactly like his and it's so clear you only draw things he likes, it looks like you want people to think youre as cool as him just by drawing stuff inspired by his life, shaking my smh 😔 fr tho u make some good points here, i don't think i've ever been a comparing person, but it still actually gave me a better perspective on why "i love ur art bc it looks like [popular thing]" isnt the compliment people think it is. sometimes you just gotta bluntly lay out how it sounds and people will understand your perspective that they didn't before. on another note, what's your perspective on scenarios where an artist tells another artist of a similar popularity smth like "omg your oc is so cool, they remind me a bit of my oc" not in a "YOU COPIED!" way but more of a "great minds think alike, i think our ocs could be friends/siblings/etc from alternate universes" way? i have done this before and it's mostly if not always been received positively. i think this is because it doesn't carry the same underlying implication of "you copied [popular thing] to make this, so it doesn't have its own merits", it's pretty clear that both parties are on roughly equal footing, highly doubt either copied each other, and still see differences between the characters. do you think this is okay or do I need to stop?

I’m fine with like ppl saying ‘oh your style gives off similar vibes’ but when it’s a straight up comparison or saying it looks exactly like a certain style it upsets me. I was also recently told my art style was a rip off bad version of the jelly artsyle when I’ve been rendering and drawing like that before the jelly artsyle existed😢 I’m confident enough in my art that it doesn’t affect me but I can’t imagine what that does to young artists
