Oda (2018): The reason I don't want to draw scenes where people die is because I want to draw a party after the battle. If someone dies, you can't have an enjoyable party. A party is my ideal form of friendship. I want to end with One Piece with a *big party*.

*In Alabasta Arc, the country was at stake* You guys missed it because the actual flaw of the arc which is Vivi pointlessly dragging the Straw hats across the continent. STAKES - 1. The lack of rain caused a 3 years drought and the King has banned the use of dance powder which is leading to desperation and a rebellion 2. Large batches of Dance powder were found smuggled in the kings palace in order to frame and overthrow the King 3. The warlord is gaining popularity while making the kings guard look incompetent, 4. A crime syndicate is playing both sides and destabalzing the country. Meaning, ALABASTA would have collapsed and Baroque Works would have taken over the entire Island. What pell did was important yet insignificant compared to the peak of instability which was war waging below him. Its the reason why people were fighting even when a nuke went of above their heads, the stakes were that high.

Stakes in one piece are almost always emotional + world stakes.

Oda dont kill character, if he does, it gotta be impactful for sure. But hey, it's ain't big issue right, one piece still enjoyable right? That's more than enough

Oda doesn't like killing people, simple as that. Backstories don't count. Pell is the most egregious example, that one irritated a lot of people. Devil fruit holders do have more resilience than people who have not eaten a devil fruit, but they are not invincible. As for injuries, just accept the fact that in this universe breaking every bone in your body doesn't automatically mean you are incapacitated for the next 6 years. Vivi is a Straw Hat, she's just taking a leave of absence. Long-time One Piece fans complain about issues with the anime and the story, too. We're still waiting with bated breath for the next episode or chapter, though.

2:33 when i first watched pell going up with the bomb, the feels. and then, we mourn. and then, he's alive! my brother and i are so happy he's alive purely bcs he is alive. there is that relief. however, in storytelling perspective, it is a flaw as it lessened the emotional punch of alabasta. but at the same time, i dunno, it didn't dampen my feels for the big events prior to that. like the grueling look of luffy on croc's hook, luffy's satisfying punch on croc, that godforsaken goodbye to vivi and bon-chan's sacrifice. not to mention the themes surrounding alabasta and their pay-offs. "no one dies in one piece" and "there are no stakes in one piece" are, i dunno, too generalized thoughts. one piece is one piece. i like to think it is nuanced. it's not perfect, but it's one hell of a ride. also, i keep thinking, there are prolly stuff oda would want to go back and rewrite especially since he's doing this weekly after all. but he can't, or maybe he will in through one piece in other mediums like the live action or the new anime.

For normal people in the east blue the only way to the grandline is reverse mountain or the calm belt. They can't go through either so all they know is rumors and legends.

i's not just water that cancels the power of crocodile. any liquid would make particles of sand stick together, and the more viscous the better. with all the mythical and supernatural stuffs in one piece, there is still science in it. the final fight between crocodile & luffy just proved that "blood is thicker than water" :D

This is a thing in a zoan type devil fruits they are physically enhanced and have enhanced regenerative factors and I think that's allow Pell to survive somehow on that bomb.

Alabasta Arc is about freedom, civil war and corruption. I’m glad you watched this arc. You’re gonna have so much fun. Robin is a mysterious and interesting character. She is a key character in the future arcs. It’s going to get better.

Season 2 will definitely be all of alabasta.

I’m almost certain Oda takes criticism from online and actually changes to make things better some times. There will be a handful of times where you feel like aww man that guy should’ve died here. But later on Oda seems to realize he needs to make some changes. Keep pushing on, death will absolutely happen but it’s always used in impactful ways.

Because you're right, they'll cut some stuff and now we know they can also rewrite some parts of it. But even with all that, I don't think they'll be able to keep it within the 8 episodes. Great discussion guys. I totally understand the problems you listed. As far as stakes go, you have only finished saga no 2. There's a lot more coming your way. There's a lot of devil fruit lore to be learned as well, but generally I have come to accept that one piece world is not like our world. People are made of stronger stuff, especially df eaters. Take Zoro, boy gets beaten and cut, takes a nap, wakes up healed. Sanji, broke his bones in Drum Island, one operation from Kureha and he's fine. Usopp being a god and healing his nose, totally straight. Nami with that pierced foot keeping herself up and running till the last moment. Koza getting shot so many times and surviving! Luffy, getting tired and hungry, eats a shit load of food and comes back stronger! This show has whimsy and absurdity, and after a while you love to roll with it. 😂😂 That being said, there is a lot of death in one piece too. There are also insane levels of emotional and psychological stakes. I'm excited about the next saga, hope you guys will post soon. 😊

Making theories is one of the best things in the OP community. No other anime has this level of theory crafting. Just goes to show how dense and rich the world is for so many people to make theories. I've watched tons of other creators watch other anime and it just doesn't compare to OP.

They specifically said he killed the 100 at whiskey peak…. It was told to you that Zoan types are sturdier and have regenerative animal properties. Luffy is rubber through and through. That includes his organs. The stakes of one piece are about the circumstances of before and after for both our crew and the overarching world. Also the reason Crocodiles plans actually failed is only 50% strawhats. Nico Robin is responsible for the rest. She had been undermining him since before she found Luffy. Remember she saved Igaram but before that she leaked crocs info and led Vivi to all the info she needed on baroque. As for the live action with out spoilers. You can 100 bet twin capes/laboon will be part of it. Thats all I will say about that.

Originally Pell was supposed to die, the only reasons he didn't was 9/11 and tsunamis and stuff. Your takeaway from this show until now should be: people are tougher in the OP world, they are harder to kill (not impossible) but that doesn't mean they can't be severely injured, permanently disabled, heavily traumatized etc. Also as a side note, named characters tend to survive but there were countless unnamed deaths, even in Alabasta alone. Also flashback deaths exist. Regarding the stakes, they exist, just not in terms of deaths. Everyone may have survived but what would have happened to the country if Crocodile succeeded for example? Oda doesn't like killing people left and right, one may like it or not. (slight spoiler but not really) Pell hasn't come back or been mentioned until now, ep1100+. So you can safely consider him dead. Headcanon

I think the LA episodes will be ep1 login town, ep2 reverse mountain/laboon, ep3 whiskey peak, ep4/5 little garden, ep6/7 drum island. There might be some changes with how long or or short each part is. But I think they will end on drum island as the season finale. There is too much that needs to be in the show if they do the full 10 seasons. There is a lot they can’t skip. I think alabasta will be season three. And I believe they are film season 2 and 3 at the same time so it makes sense.

Crocodile being really nerfed because they needed to beat him is a genuine complaint to have. He’s a warlord and he has an elemental Devil Fruit! He should’ve been a lot harder to beat! It’s one of the reasons I like him so much. I’ve always just felt like Oda had grander dreams for Crocodile and you can see it in the way they had to bs the fight just a little (still a favorite of mine) to make sure Luffy won. Since Crocodile is gone now here are a few fun facts about how strong he was! Elemental devil fruits grant an invulnerability since they are now made of that element. BUT it’s not invincible! The user has to actively be aware and choosing to do that with their body. Notice Luffy was able to knock into Smokers back at the beginning of the arc, and Smoker knocked into Ace who was so shocked he didn’t just turn into fire. Crocodile was incredibly in tune with his fruit! He’s able to sense quick sand in the dessert through it and is also able to control his invulnerability within fractions of a second! Crocodiles bounty was 81 million but I can’t help but wonder how long he was a warlord and how out of date that bounty was! I think the stakes come from more personal enotional states. It’s hard to reconcile with sense western media puts a lot of significance on death but the Japanese audience doesn’t really agree. They take the view that offering your life is enough, they don’t need to actually die. Overall One Piece isn’t perfect but when it shines, it really shines!

Saw a theory took the distance of Alaberna the capital and Rain Base and determine how fast Pell is flying, based on how fast Luffy got back to fight Crocodile the second time. Then they calculated the size of the bombs explosion. Base on this info they determined that if Pell dropped the bomb, and then immediately went into a nose dive, he wouldn't be able to out fly the bomb but would reach the outer edge of the explosion, which might result in him surviving the explosion. Also their is a big Manga/Anime difference. In the Anime they show the explosion encompass Pell. In the Manga you don't have that, you see Pell flying up. Then the next Panel is the explosion. I also want to point out the guy that had this Theory also stated that based on the explosion's size, and Pell's speed carrying a heavy load like that, that Alaberna still should have been blown up lol. Not saying I agree with any of this, just thought it was interesting.

During the Luffy vs Zoro fight, Luffy was dead set on killing Zoro. There's no debate there, it wasn't banter like with Sanji/Zoro. That's why people say it goes against his character. It doesn't make sense for Luffy, who just showed off his belief in his crew with Nami's whole arc just prior to this, to just turn on Zoro and refuse to listen to anything he had to say.

So I do agree that Pell should have just died, it would have been much more impactful... But I will say in Drum Island, Dalton mentioned that Zoan type fruits have insane durability. So it doesn't come out of nowhere, just feels like it robbed Pell of his moment.

Oda rarely kill his characters in OP and that is the most hated thing in the OP community. I hope that the new OP anime, that will start soon, will be darker and they will have the gut to kill more peoples.

They might go Ep 1. Logue Town Ep 2. Laboon/Whiskey, (I believe both happen on the same day/night) Ep 3. Little Garden Ep 4&5. Drum Island Ep 6-8? Alabasta I don't know if we have been given confirmation that season 2 will be the same length or longer. But I think they could probably fit most, if not all, of the major details. Like, they might remove the giants picnic to shorten time

Also fun fact on Luffy's birthday last month the actor who play's Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) did a birthday video for him on the netflix ig and he brought out a white cake with a "3" shaped candle that he blew out that was shaped to look exactly like Mr 3's hair style (they zoomed in on it too and the fact that the cake looked like wax). They teased Mr. 3 with that so I think there's definitely gonna be Alabasta in the next season after Little Garden. I hope they get approved for more than 8 episodes so they dont have to cut so much or push Alabasta to season 3 but I have a feeling they are gonna reach it in season 2 regardless.

Pell was intended to die, but Oda and the editors decided it was insensitive as this had taken place shortly after 9/11. They believed it insensitive. Oda does not do this kind of 'emotion-robbing' again. Or at least not as egregious! Do not worry or think it something that happens often.

Pell surviving was a bad choice for sure, he took a nuke point blank, he should have died as no human being could survive that. i can see Season 2 going like this; Loguetown to Whiskey Peak (1) Little Garden (2) Drum Island (3 and 4) Alabasta (5-8) cause Alabasta and Drum has the most relevant story beats, Little Garden just introduces Giants into the world, so i imagine that they will have plenty of time saved up for Drum and Alabasta, especially with all the filler cut. as the show goes on, the Live Action is gonna be HARD PRESSED to complete a Saga within 8 episodes, even the next Saga i have doubt that they can do it in 8 eps.
