It's implied Blackbeard brought fruit in there so when Whitebeard died it transferred, like on Punk Hazard when Smiley died the closest apple became their devil fruit. There was fruit at Linlin's birthday feast too when Carmel died. Oda said in a question corner that's how devil fruit powers are inherited but it's still a mystery how Blackbeard can have 2 devil fruits.

Unless these fruits actively alter their own flavour to taste uniquely awful to their consumer, or they're only awful tasting to some, while others love it. Some think Hawaiian pizza, salmon, and raw onions on burgers taste awful while others intentionally order it to eat.
