Im going to say it clearly to anyone that didnt bought onigashima pack yet. Gear 5 is really hard to use because of its type. You would be forced to spam square combo the entire time or giant one as long as enemy has their defense gauge not broken. Dont get me wrong, its still very fun form to use but Onigashima Luffy might be the worst character out of 3 new ones you are getting.

You unlock gears 2-4 during story mode. Gear 2 is a transformation that you unlock and equip for pre TS Luffy only. Some of the moves become part of his normal moveset when you use post TS Luffy. Gear 3 is used for special moves that you unlock and then equip on Luffy - you can use them in both versions of Luffy, but pre TS shrinks after using. Both Gear 4 forms are transformations for post TS Luffy that you can equip. Gear 5 is a DLC exclusive transformation for the "Battle of Onigashima" Luffy that they released
