more content from a recent training session - this was a "what if" question that came up and I always tell people you need to learn how to sprawl at bare minimum. #karate #martialarts #mma #ufc #fighting

Personally, I’d say falling safely is most important but sprawling’s definitely important too so I’ll allow it. ;)

That’s a great point! Learning how to break fall and roll is usually the first lesson for most grapplers and it’s neglected in striking arts like karate

What are your thoughts on the idea of lifting your knee, when the opponent comes for a double leg take down, so you hit his face with your knee?
@bentinho20 күн бұрын
In most cases it'll make the takedown easier for them, it'll be much more effective if you sprawl first.
@KarateBreakdown18 күн бұрын
If you can train it as an automatic response it’ll work most of the time, but I always lead my training sessions with “what if?” Questions so what if the knee fails, then you’ll have to know how to sprawl to prevent the takedown 👍👍

First, I love that you're encouraging non-grapplers to respect and address grappling techniques accordingly. Second, I would argue the hips and the sprawl are the last line of defense for a takedown (to be fair, I think you're assuming the hands, elbows, etc. have been bypassed). Lastly, the next step is to remember that someone who knows that they're doing will keep stepping up and turning with you (this gets them out from under your body weight and allows them to use the head/shoulder and arm in a push/pull motion). It gets more complicated at this point, but the concepts are the same: strip the hands with low blocks or framing on the elbows or wrists. If all else fails, get those shoelaces to the mat haha.

100% there’s a whole system for takedown defense that needs to be its own skillset to master. Hopefully this video gets some karate guys even thinking about it 👌

@@KarateBreakdown Osu! At one point I tried a month of Jiujitsu just to get an idea of what was involved on the ground, but ~3 years and a blue belt later I keep seeing how the traditional and "grappling" arts are heavily intertwined. (I think all arts should have standing grappling as a core part of training tbh)

I don't do Rohai, but I also use Kusanku Dai as a reference for sprawling, and I also see Naihanchi Sandan and Passai as incorporating split/single-side sprawls.

in shitoryu style rohai and (chatan yara) kushanku, there is no sprawl movement. can you help me think of any shitoryu (itosu) or shotokan katas with wrestling application, that is not like a thai clinch? also, in seipai, could you say the second and third move is a takedown/body lock?

you need to be more focused on stuffing the head aswell, wide legs and pushing your hips back and making them heavy is a good start but search youtube for down blocking to stop the shot in the first place and head stuffing to make sure you dont get run down
@KarateBreakdown18 күн бұрын
Great point, posture control and preventing them from scooping underneath you is huge to prevent the takedown 👍

If you want another kata for sprawl/take down defense on the naha-te side, Saifa has it. At least through the bunkai I have been taught.

Look at any 45 or large steps back (kiba or long back stance L type). Goju seiuchin kata some schools have this movement. Chinto as well at least as i practice it. Im thinking the deep low kiba with the down "punches". Also good thoughts. Dont worry about heat from the karate world as anyone telling you you arent right in this doesnt want to live in reality because this happens. It doesnt take a rocket surgeon to tackle someone and we need to be aware that when the blitz of swinging doesnt work people will try and tackle to ground and pound. Keep thinking and keep up the good work.

just info from a bjj guy the hip shouldn't be pushing forward cause you giving your body to them you wanna make sure to away have one arm under and another to control the hand from locking their arm on you, sparring is a great defense but it isn't simple to do if you can't move your hip away from a experience wrestler that do it for a living ,once you throw your hip they know how to counter it just how we striker would when striking. angle is key you didnt have your hip in the right spot it hard to explain it on writing but as someone who train mma this isn't good enough to stop a grappler. ideally you wanna have both arm under but if they swing you could be knock out for not keeping your hand up so usually when training for mma one arm for the wizzard in the other to hand fight, this is something your could hear John Jone telling bo nickel a great wreatler and grappler when they was playing around bo thought he had Jone but Jone was saying we can work on your hand fighting cause grappling in a mma or street fighter isn't the same as trying one martial art it take time to adapt too and learn but hand fighting for position is key to not getting take down and being able to counter too with knee and also to turn them so they don't have you against a wall.

Judoka Herr. Yeah that’s actually good Judoka too. Like blocking a big throw with your hips! Maybe you want to look into it. Judo hip check.
