In this video, I react for the first time to Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox performing ‘Rule Of Nines’ in one take. In this video, I analyse her amazing performance, explain and demonstrate her vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. A female metal vocalist is great timing during women’s World Cup I reckon 🤘

AAAAH SPIRITBOX!!!! her most impressive one take performance is the Circle With Me one, but if you wanna hear a metal vocalist with a great vocal range, check out Spencer Sotelo of Periphery. Periphery's song The Scourge is an excellent showcase of Spencer's vocal abilities, but you could also do the music video for their song Ragnarok. no vocal coaches ever really check him out, and it's devastating because he's so talented.

Great analysis! One of the really interesting things about Courtney is that she seems able to play around on the edge between true fold phonation and harsh vocals without hurting her voice to much greater extent than most singers who can do both. She's also very deliberate in her use of vocal tempo, and her vocals usually have a deliberate rhythmic relationship to the song tempo. If you ever check out her one take of Circle With Me, you'll get to see an even more extreme example of her instantly flipping back and forth between cleans and screams multiple times in a single phrase.

Youre absolutely right about Spiritbox being good way to introduce people to metal. Ive been using Spiritbox and Courtney as my bulletproof "gateway drug" for when i show my music taste to people who are not accustomed to harsh vocals and music.

i'm just gonna go ahead and say it. when u started singing like her, i got chills and goosebumps. that didn't happen when Courtney sang. Your whispered and low voice singing is amazing, pretty much like the rest of your vocal abilities. I hope you will explore singing different genres yourself and share that with us.

For me her uniqueness is she has a very distinct pronunciation with the words, and the cadence is like a wind she is able to ride effortlessly in any direction.

Courtney has a fantastic voice, very different to other singers who can growl and scream, I love how light her voice can be, it makes the contrasts more notable, Spiritbox have produced an outstanding album and a couple of great EPs all of which are worth listening to.

Not only do we get your boundless enthusiasm and expert technical breakdowns, but you demonstrate Courtney's sound from several different portions of the song so incredibly well that it's hard to think of anyone else with whom I'd rather hear the song. Her airy, breathy cleans kind of reminds me Chino from Deftones. He does a lot of that kind of whispering technique. I've always loved how that lightness sits on top of such heavy music.

I just came across your channel and I *love* your reactions, analysis and demonstration of the vocal techniques - they're really, really detailed and useful and ones that I feel like I could take away and use and learn from! Not doctors, but first responder paramedics. Close enough. Courtney is very much in control of her voice, and the ethereal sounding part at the beginning is intentional to mimic the studio version where they recorded her clean vocals after the harsh vocals (which left them with a very similar “tired” feeling). You should watch her one take of Circle With Me. It’ll blow your mind at the end.

I've watched quite a few reactions to this and the one take Circle With Me by vocal coaches over the past couple years and you're only the 2nd I've seen who actually knows how, and can do, harsh vocals. Loved the breakdown of all the techniques and the anatomy behind it all. You're absolutely lovely (like legit you always seem like you'd be amazing to grab a cup of tea and hang out chatting with) and brilliant as always (love your growl and your ability to spot on mimic wide ranges of techniques while breaking down what is going on in them!! ).
